If Crowther hasn't played rep footy for anyone, comes here and stays for 3 years I think he'd be eligible for us wouldn't he?

That was my question.  Can he state that he intends to play for us when he gets citizenship before he's completed the 3 years?  Or under the laws of the game can they only state who they intend to play for once they've done the three years in the country?

That's all assuming he wants it though.

Quick squad update then.

                                                  Paston/Crowther?

Lia/Mulligan/Chirstie?/Muscat        Siggy/Dura/McKain           Lochhead

Bertos/Hearfield/Lia/Christie?             Diego/Brown/McKain/Ferrante        Daniel

                                  Greenacre/Costa/Kruse?/Corrales?/Krishna?

Definately don't think signing Plodder is neccesary, and after signing a targetman 2 of the trialling strikers or Kruse might be a bit much.

don't like McKain bracketed at the back. I know he can play there, but don't think he should during the season...

Mulligan should be bracketed on the right midfield too, and Hearfield and Bertos up front- esp if we play the interchangable 3 across the front the way we did last year.

Bertos covers left wing too surely?

Please NO bertos or Hearfield up front.

Couldn't agree more - McKain is far too valuable as DM to have to play CB when the inevitable happens and Siggy or Durante get injured or suspended.

The squad is coming together nicely but, in addition to needing to fill the target man position, we are potentially exposed at CB and Left Back.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

not as an out and out striker- but in the floating role they played in several games to good effect where 3 were up front, but all three were given licence to range from wing to wing up front.

Plus after Smeltz Hearfield and Bertos did tap in a couple of goals- sure we wouldn't want to be relying on it- I'll take genuine strikers if you got them- but I enjoyed watching the games where those 3 worked with pace and movement in the front third.

Looking great to be honest. Can't beleive we have so much signings to come. I agree that Christie may be surplus - esp with the midfield options we have.

How are we going to play them? What formation? My main Concern is the mids?
Ideally we would play Brown, McKain and Diego all at once right?

Maybe 4-3-3 with Greenie central and Bertos one side and Kruse/Costa/Krishna.
Don't know how it'l work with a targetman too.

But its good that we have hard decisions to make.

And give Lochy some competition please

[/QUOTE] We definately need back-up there

Yup, lots of interchangable players up that right hand side, Costa and Kruse can be used on the wings as well. Just put Lia and Christie in both because they are midfielders who have been converted.

Just placed them according to their preferred foot, most (if not all) of the wide defenders and mids can perfrom on the opposite flank.

Umm that squad looks pretty weak. I'd say you'd be looking for at least another decent attacker (whether wide or central), another CB and probably someone with a left foot.

Plodder has played time at left back for the AW's and can play anywhere across midfield.

I don't see Brisbane Roar letting go of Kruse..and I don't particularly see us signing him. That said, hell would I like to sign the boy?! Sure he's got attitude, but he's got plenty of talent as well. Perhaps the only thing I haven't liked about the Phoenix since V.1 was that our 'youth policy' was not near as good as the other teams. The Roar have launched a number of top youngsters in the A-League who have had great impact, and they weren't the only team.

We had Draper, Spoonely and Costa for 2 years, with the 1st two never appearing for the first team and the second - perhaps unfairly - not getting much of a chance to shine.

I reckon that signing Kruse would be MAJOUR coup for us. I would be the icing on the cake for our midfield. Bring it on.

He's only young, and he will grow up. In Europe, rising stars crash their Lamborghini, or end up sniffing coke or sleeping with prostitutes...in the end he went out a couple a times and got punched...big deal. That definitely taught him a lesson, and if that wasn't enough - as it's already been suggested - we have plenty of players who will straighten him!

Allow me to express two more thoughts.

1) in regards to Kruise, I don't get this 'bad boy' image and it makes me chuckle a bit that in Aussie he's labelled as such. The 'late night' incidents show two things: first the boy hasn't got a great deal of respect for his club [which could be worrying] and secondly that the Roar are crap at dealing with their players. We are talking about human beings here. Coaches and team manager must deal with players on a professional AND a human level.

Do you think Ricky, in the first week of traning two years ago, told Daniel to hurry up and learn English cause nobody could understand him?? Or did he ever BEG Dodd not to hold onto the ball for more than 3 seconds because he was going to lose without fail? No!
Same goes for the players' so-called hobbies. If you know that someone is stepping over the line you have to pull ranks, whilst avoiding a full on conflict.

2) It's probably the first time I agree with Greenie...let's sign Kruse! I haven't been this excited since there were rumours of the Nix signing Italian defender Pistone...I just hope this time the deal doesn't fall through.

I apologize for the tantrum. I just wanted to make my feelings known!

I hope it does.  Only this week on an Aus forum I used him to prove my point that diving, prancing, hairband wearing young primadonna's aren't just a European or South American phenomenon... and that's before I start on how he is a no trick pony who was negated after about 3 or 4 matches following his Australian media-hyped 'next coming of Kewell' like debut...

arguably the same could be said of C. Ronaldo, but United put up with it because they know that it's worth while doing what they can to keep him in check  because he's a valuable member of the team.

...but he wasn't last year for Queensland.  Played a couple of games and did nothing and even in his debut season by the end he was decoration because other teams had found him out.

He's not even NZFC-grade Ronaldo based on the visual evidence.  Krishna and Costa are both much better players without the prancing.

Kruise's debut season

Looks reasonable to me.  Will Costa do better than that this year??

Second seasons for each of them :

Collapsible Kruse

Super Costa

Stats don't tell the story of how after the first half-dozen displays he went downhill rapidly and disappeared from matches.

Kruse is a good player - he's just has a face you want to hit and apparently has lots of problems off the field.

Hard News seems to be against certain players no matter what they do though so eh. Either way, Kruse is most likely a better option than Krishna.

If we sign him I'll be stoked to be proved wrong, but on the evidence of anything other than his first half-dozen games he's hype and no substance... and if the choice came down to him or Krishna there would be no discussion for me.

Honestly - that is what I thought about Zullo and he's come pretty good.

Don't see Krishna being any better. I can see your POV though - rather a player that is playing locally that isn't a twat (that may be slightly worse skill wise) than a Meg Ryan lookalike who you want to punch from Aussie.

See, Zullo, definitely.  You do have to wonder though why there is no chance we could ever sign Zullo but Kruse is available... this from a club who prattle on about the quality of players they develop.

I'm not certain Krishna isn't there skillwise either.  He's fast, can control a ball and finish a chance... that alone is one more thing than most A-League strikers can manage.  Sure, he's more raw, but if the way he has improved as a general player at Waitak is duplicated at the Phoenix he'll be too good for the A-League in a couple of seasons.

Kruse is having to start from scratch again, to prove that he's more than just a lightweight Joel Griffiths wannabe.
