The best bet to sign would be on loan, cos otherwise he will be losing out on a sh$t load of money and i doubt we could afford a transfer fee celtic would want

At the moment he's staring down the barrell of earning absolutely nothing once his Celtic deal finishes, coming back here would give him a chance to re-establish himself before a return to Europe.

I assume Tony might even talk of a loan with Celtic as well, if we cover half his salary as marquee or something then Celtic have a some rielief on the wage bill and Killen get's the chance to rebuild the career... as well as play here which he seems to be keen on doing at some point.

A Loan deal would have to be the most practically option for all parties, as for the reasons you have said above. I doubt he would want to come to the nix at this point in time on a 2yr or more contract money wise. But hopefully he comes here, scores a bucket load of goals, and goes back to Europe and finds regular football at a good club.

He did say that he wanted to return to NZ to play at the end of his career, having said that that was when he was carving up with Hibs so I don't think he has too many options.

Would be a great signing i think. A recognizable name. But looks like there's a few weeks left in negotiations.

Even if it's just a bit of media coverage, can't hurt. Need sum hype to start the season.

He was bought by WGS and with no manager named yet, his career is in real limbo. Greenacres decision based on length of contract might also apply here.

If the new manager is not SPL based, I suspect he will bring in his own striker, Killen was way down the pecking order and I would expect him to be shifted this summer.

A loan deal might be a real coup, as Killen wants to play and Celtic are likely to want to get rid of him.

TonyP has said he would be Marquee, so the wages are outside the cap.

Not likely to hear any progress till Killen sees if there is any interest in him from the Confed Cup.

For NZ's sake, hope he tears it up, but for this Nix, not so much so :-|

If he doesn't come this season, we'll get the same speculation every winter until he does.

And of course if he does come on loan, we'll get the "he's staying on" speculation next year...

Suspect you are on to it - but if it helps positively raise the Nix profile a bit at a time we are encouraging members to re-sign - great.

Just need to be careful we don't over do the cry wolf signing and we actually deliver on one in the not too distant future.
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

There are no negotiations. They cant approach him till next Jan under Fifa rules.

Thats only if they want to get him outright with 6 months left of his contract.

Loan deals + the possibility of being released are what we are looking at

Threaten him until he comes here

Or use my methods

1. Threaten Him

2. Manupulate him

3. Hypnotise him

4. Get pamela anderson to negotiate his contracts

5. (the easiest) sign someone else

Although on serious terms I doubt he will come

If I were Tony P looking to sign Killen I'd be a bit nervous signing him up for big money as our marquee player without trialling him first.  It seems to me that his possible signing may at least somewhat be based on emotion, him being a Kiwi and an All White.  I'm not certain he is up to marquee standard, regardless of what he's earning at Celtic (which is in a totally different football market to the A-League).  Apart from a good short spell at Hibs, he hasn't done a hell of alot either at club level or for the All Whites, and has pretty much been off the radar screen for at least the last 12 months.  This may be a controversial view, but I think the club needs to reflect carefully on being possibly lured into paying big money for a player who may not really be worth the money, at least in the context of the A-League market, that would need to be paid.  That said, he may show Ricki the goods in Africa, although I suspect this will not be easy for Killen given the All Whites will be up against some top class players in the next few games.

Forgive my ignorance, but what change in stance? Last time I checked it was still pick by 21, the most recent change being naturalized players now requiring 5 years before eligibility. If I've missed something, please feel free to correct me

That being said, the foreign player quota seems to work by passports rather than FIFA status, so he'd still count as a Kiwi due to his birth citizenship despite being declared for Scotland (a la Judas and Mossy)

He trialled at Toronto FC during the MLS pre-season, didn't seem to impress. Admittedly, TFC has one of the strongest forward packs in the MLS (aside from Chad Barrett... ) so it could have just been a line-up depth issue.

I'd defo give him a look though, doesn't hurt that he also has an NZ passport either so he wouldn't be a waste of a quota space.

Slightly off topic, but does that mean that if the AW's want Fallon, McGlinchey, Reid or anyone else they'll have to wait 5 years for them?

If Killen comes, hopefully he can replicate his Hibs form. I honestly have never seen him play well.

Having seen nearly every game he played for Hibs, I must say I would be VERY pleased if he signed for Phoenix. I'd even take him back at Hibs!

He would be AT LEAST as good as Smeltz, if not better in certain areas, i.e. holding the ball up.

Here's an interesting list of League 1 players who've either been released on a free or transfered.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1190319/Whos-whos-Club-club-guide-summer-transfer-League-One.html?ITO=1490

To put things into perspective, a total of 105 players have been released from League One clubs and only 10 recruited.

I think Killen will effectively be on trial with the AW's over the next couple of weeks.

Would be an amazing signing. I agree he's been off the boil over the past 12 months, but how cool would it be to actually have a NZ marquee, especially if he can get back to some of his past form.

We at least know how well Killen is playing now (or Ricki does), which is a lot more than can be said of many marquees to come to our league. Would want to try and avoid putting on too much pressure though of being NZ's "star striker" in case he gets Sydney FC - Aloisi disease.

That's not true if they get permission from Celtic, which seeing as he hasn't played for months they are likely to grant

This Killen thing is pretty far fetched for the following reasons:
1. He hasn't indicated at all that he wants to come.
2. He has a contract at another club
3. Doubt we could meet his wage demands

Nope - the 5 years is for players who move to a country to play football then gain citizenship a la Daniel. Fallon, McGlinchey and Reid are all eligible to represent NZ through birth so they can play for the All Whites, so long as they do before their first full cap for England/Scotland/Denmark.

Before the news Everton FC alerted me to, the deal was they were long gone - by playing age grade for another nation and not declaring to play for another before turning 21, they were locked to that nation. Now they're not.

Interesting to see him on the released list.
Would be good for us, 6"3 target man who can score!

I wonder if Ricky and Tony saw any of the players on the list while they were over there that have now become available...?

Hope the Nix consider approaching McGlinchey as he's got a good pedigree with appearances at u-19 and u-20 level for Scotland and numerous reserve and youth team games for Celtic (one first team appearance)- plus he qualifies as a local, being born in Wellington in 1987 while his Scottish dad played for Mirimar, and thus wouldn't take up a foreign player berth.

Trouble is he plays in a position we've got stacks of players in.

Now, if he was a goal scorer we'd be all over him.

I agree with you on the first point, but as for 2 and 3, I would suggest the most likely scenario is a loan from Celtic (ala Hernandez for the Victory last year) with us covering a good chunk of his wages. I think this would be reasonable as it will give Killen guaranteed game time, and keep him fit for Celtic. And if they don't want him after his contract expires then we can negotiate with him.
