Could be tempted if any clubs put in a transfer fee - they got him for free (obviously) and they have a more than able keeper in Langerak.

Just been thinking, does Manny Muscat count as an import for us now that he plays in the Maltese national team?

No, who you represent has no impact, only where you are a citizen.

He's still an Australian.  That's how Moss and Smeltz don't count as imports.

If he gets game time rather than spending the first year not playing football and going backwards...Im not convinced signing with Nix is in his best interests...the clubs yes but...

So having a player remain in New Zealand based A-League team until he is mature enough (as a football player) to move on to bigger and better things is a bad thing?

Would you prefer he stays playing ihn the NZFC where he may not even get noticed?

granted moving to the Phoenix and getting paid $40K is a good move..financially speaking.  I was musing as to whether it is in his best interests at 17 to potentailly lose game time rather than keep playing where he is and maybe move to a league where there are competition for reserve teams that give him game time.....James did it clearly.  I recall discussions last year about whether having Costa sitting on the bench..if he got there....... week after week was good for his development.

Good point on Costa Boro, people do seem to have short memories.

However, unless Costa or Rojas himself were looking to head off overseas and pick up a contract then(yet alone get one), then both are in the best place possible at the moment. The players around them are (apparently) League 1 lower Champioship equivalents so it can only do them good.

Heard a lot of promising things about Rojas, so am very keen to see how he progresses.

He's very good at taking on his man which is something NZ footballers lack which is a great positive, espeically him being a winger, but what is his crossing like and finishing also. Anyone seen at training??

do you people think Costa regrets signing for the Nix? If not - cant see what point you are trying to make

If Costa (and Rojas or Crowther for that matter) were to sign a lucrative deal with a European club that involved a large sum of money for the club in a transfer deal would you be complaining?

Lock them all in for 4 year deals I say and let them show their talent on the A-League stage!

These young players are probably much better off training with experienced professionals everyday, learning from then, pitting their skills against them etc than playing one NZFC game a week with probably two training sessions max.

Interesting thoughts about the NZFC and game time!!... especially since it was that exactly that got Marco noticed... The fact that Waikato FC introduced a 16 yr old to the National League, playing him when the conditions and the opposition suited, allowed him to show his undoubted ability and talent.. would he have got that opportunity at an Auckland City or Waitakere?? Look at some of the other talented youngsters around, Jack Hobson McVeigh, Jacob Mathews, Zane Sole etc etc.. sat on the bench or worse at the bigger clubs stagnating.. Marco flourished with the game time he got!!

Good on WFC!!!

I think the same point is being made about signing for the Phoenix.. Costa was a star a few years ago, oads of promise and high hopes for him.. sat on the bench getting little or no game time, he has stagnated... I for one think Marco is more talented and hope he will force himself into the reckoning for some game time at the Phoenix..

I don't think Costa has stagnated, his development has probaly slowed but it he is still a better player than two years ago. I think Marco will force himself into the team first season though.

There is a problem with putting youngsters straight into the first team, that even if they have a bright start, probably actually particulalry if they have a bright start, the opposition work them out quickly if they play every week. Kruse and Zullo come to mind.

I noticed him at Napier u19s, but still agree with you - well done Waikato - he had a good summer.

I'd say Costa would still be playing for Olympic if he hadnt signed for the Nix .To say he has stagnated is bollox sorry.

Sorry if this is common knowledge, but is Marco in the NZ U-21s or even U-17s? (not sure on rules for birthdays etc)

Another reason for having a draft system. They could do better at another club.

However didn't they get to play in the national youth league?

Hi Everyone,
On our Radio show today Miles and I spoke to Tony Pignata and Michael Glading with questions you asked me to ask them
1,Why did the Phoenix not get a Reserve team in the NZFC
Ans"The Nzfc clubs voted against it,I asked Tony was it because they were worried the Nix would pinch prospective players,Tony said they would wait until all the teams had announced their squads.
I asked Michael what was the divvy up of the money from the World Club  Champs.
Answer. This was confidential, was this the reason Canterbury reversed their decision because they forgot to add in their share.

I assume this is your speculation.  I'd be very worried if it was true.

I never said Costa stagnated, merely implied he may be slightly frustrated by a lack of opportunities.

No player likes been on the bench no matter how appreciative of been given a chance they are. Any decent professional should believe full heartedly that they are the one who can make all the difference!

yeah it was MrWaikato who stated he had stagnated. And yes obviously he would rather be on the field. The pros outweight the cons though

With Rojas in and Christie out our squad is sitting at 18; 3 mandatory youth spots filled (Rojas, Crowther and Costa), 2 more to sign to reach minimum required squad of 20.

So far 8 out (Moss, Smeltz, Dodd, Christie, Johnson, Draper, Kwasnik & Coveny) and 4 in (Crowther, Greenacre, Diego & Rojas) over the off season.

Squad is currently;

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON FIVE (09/10):
#4) Jon McKain
#7) Leo Bertos
#10) Michael Ferrante
#13) Troy Hearfield
#16) David Mulligan
#17) Vince Lia
#23) Costa Barbarouses
#22) Andrew Durante
#1) Mark Paston
#25) Manny Muscat
         Reece Crowther

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON SIX (10/11):
#3) Tony Lochhead
#6) Tim Brown
#11) Daniel
#18) Ben Sigmund
#31) Diego
#30) Chris Greenacre
#?) Marco Rojas (assuming reported 2 year contract is correct)
He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Is he playing in Aussie??
