I think you might have put your finger on it there, Harry

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

I think a few people need to get a grip here and trust that Ricki and co have a good handle on the situation. Besides we don't want to twist his arm and force managements hand around any potential signings especial given Porter was within our grasp only to be snatched away in an underhand manner.

Well said Harry!

High Five buddy!

Mind you, harry. We could be clutching at straws here. If he came to us we'd have to be sure that he'd knuckle down at training

And I dont think QPR would be that keen to palm him off to us either

Some may even see it as us taking QPR's hand me downs

Yeah, that's a good point.

I think some people think we just have to snap our fingers and players will be coming out of the woodwork to sign for us.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Okay, I'm going to make this simple.

We have 18 players, say we have $500k under the budget left, we HAVE to sign two more players.

Should we sign:
a, A wide midfield player we have an abundance of for $100-$150k of that and then find two knock down strikers for a total of $350k, or
b, Spend the $500k on the two strikers we need to fill positions we are desperately short in.

Further points.
- Last time we signed a wide player involved with the Mariners we got Kwasnik.
- As for being a kiwi.  Won't he still be eligible for New Zealand if he's playing on the Central Coast ?  Won't Ricki be watching him play nearly every week in the A-League anyway ?

Why aren't we looking to the Americal MLS for players?
I mean i thought New Zealand would sound like an appetising place for people in America.......
The cost of living is less, less crime, less gangsters and their salaries are made public so at least we know what we are contending with! I mean fred is listed as getting a gauranteed US$227,000 (NZ$412,000) per year. Sure that would make him a marquee player but it's not too bad. But there are plenty of players in there within our price range. And the MLS is a higher level than the A-League.

Haha hes on the equivalent of about $2.5 million NZ Dollars!!
But seriously, even our taxes are less then there.
Has to be an attractive proposition for someone good in the league.

This mornings DomPost has the following..

Meanwhile, in his role as Wellington Phoenix coach, Herbert is not expressing any concerns despite being two strikers short less than a month out from the start of the A-League.

He said they "had a really good list" of players and it was just a case of getting the right two. It's understood they will use next week's two-match trip to China to trial at least one Chinese player.

after noting McGlinchey is to trial with CCM

I hope this list are players who are keen to come here too? And hopefully we have already made contact?

I wouldn't mind a Chinese striker? Just no PSPs!

At this point, they are all contracted until well into our season with the MLS clubs they are at.

That's too late for us.

in the front page article re: Ricky to try and "sing up" 2 UK players for the All Whites (which I agree with), it is mentioned that we might be looking at a chinese striker during our trip to china.
But doesn't it usually work the other way? I.e. a player does well in Aus/Nz and gets a call from a Chinese super-rich clubs?

Substitute; Signing for money, Ricki for Jerry, yellow fever for black and coach for agent

P.S. Well over the speculation, progress reports etc etc - 4 weeks to season kick-off -  just show me the signings.

I remember reading somewhere on this forum that we were in negotiations with a striker that would be an automatic signing, can anyone confirm? Also does anybody have any idea who this Chinese striker would be?

Oh please not a Chinese striker! They are usually lazy, demotivated, emotionally fragile and do not adapt to other cultures well. Not to mention if they are only half decent they can still earn a lot more in the CSL.

Wow he would be a hit!! top goal scorer last year if I read right!!
would be the perfect fit.

Don't know if he is still under contract though

By way of clarification the article I quoted said Chinese player not Chinese striker..although it was coupled with 2 strikers comment.  Amused that most of the article was about World Cup..is that becoming the dominant focus?

Forget about swine flu.....I now have a serious case of striker recruitment fatigue!!!!!

Anyone else suffering from it?

Got excited about the arrival of Astoclaus, then Putter but now to be honest I might just go and lie in a darkened room and come out on the 8th August;

Symptons:

- Delerium including chanting of as many striker names as possible
- Tunnel vision
- Deluded senses including ability to pay

Diagnosis:

High chance of SRF syndrome

Remedy:

A couple of Tuis or equivalent every hour until symptons are no longer evident.  If pain persists pop down to Newtown Park and yell at the Gaffer.

SRF is expected to subside by 8 August and most people will recover fully.
