"Unknowns" being a key benefit for us. The other A League clubs will have to do their homework now!

Costa & Rojas are two of the most exciting prospect youngsters in the A League IMHO.

That's a good way of looking at it - I was thinking how well he'd adapt to being here.

Was going to surf the Chinese websites - but maybe won't now! Don't want to give the other clubs any advantage!

It has to be the "Phoenix" name that attracts the chinese players.

If we get Christchurch and Auckland teams in the A-League who wants Chinese/South East Asian players, the names "Dragon" and "Tiger" are up for grabs. Canterbury Dragons and the Auckland Tigers has an interesting ring to it.

Then our next plan is to join AFC. . . . .

I reckon Usain Bolt would fit the target man thing that Ricki seems to be after!! that much speed would definitely be handy as well...

There was definitely some kind of hype in the asian community in wgtn. Now, to say that 10K asians turned up to game would be lying, but I remember seeing more asian than usual whilst G** was with us. Really happy with all the signings, I think we do have a competitive team, with lots of offensive midfielders who have the capabilities of getting goals, and finally our own Costa with the chance of showing his worth.

However I hope we'll sign another striker even if we sign "John".

Sorry to go about this, but guys, here's a bit of Cross-Culture 101:

Asia is a Continent. Jiang Chen is from China...a country in Asia
So the "Asian" community includes Japanese, Koreans, Indians, Pakistanis, Sri Lankans etc
I don't think many Koreans would turn up to see Jiang or any other Chinese player.
Similarly as we have signed Greenacre I wouldn't expect lots of Europeans to turn up ("Pierre, I hear there is ein Englander playing for the Nix - let's go" "Mais bien sur Heinz, Allons-y!")
Chinese names put the family name first and the personal name last, so Jiang Chen's surname is Jiang.
Pronouciation of Jiang: Think of it as Jee-yang said quickly (Jee as in Jeez Wayne).

I just didn't want to use the adjective "CHINESE" 8 times in one post, I like a bit of variation. Hence the use of "asian".

have not seen this Chinese guy play so I can't comment on his abilities. However I hope he gets a full game against CCM. This guy probably has had little exposure to the robust style of defenders we have in the A-league.

He will get smashed for sure.....how he copes with it will decide wether he has the goods to be succesful in the A-league. Better to find out in a trial game than end up with another G**. you can't stereotype players from different countries but in general Asian defenses tend to be less physical. Ricki has given him good raps so we shall see.

Even if we breach PC etiquitte and label him an 'Asian' it's not like we can draw too many conclusions from comparing him to other 'Asian' players in the A League. Apart from G** I can only really think of Seo for Roar and Song for Newcastle.

Seo was actually a pretty rugged defender (but also a cheating diving little sh*te). Song has perpetually been accused of not being physical enough, which I've always felt was slightly unfair given his speed, skill and obvious commitment. G** was simply lazy and not the least bit committed.

Not much of a sample. I tend to think that the idea that the A League is a lot more physical than the Asian leagues is a myth anyway. From what I've seen of the ACL and the J League their defences can give as good as they get.

To be honest i thought Jiang looked pretty moody and nothing out of the ordinary...I hope he proves me wrong if signed.

I'd still vouch for a player of Putter's record someone who is proven at putting the ball in the goal. Jiang is still young so maybe his best football is yet to come.

Seeing that Ifill is not a complete striker but more of an attacking utility, it would be nice to have another Greenacre that does the simple and effective things right which seemed to be what we could've got with Putter. A specialist centre forward who is a centre forward does what he does well.

I suppose if Jiang doesnt work out we will still have 3 spots open to rectify what's going wrong in the season on Nov 1, I predict we will bring in a extra centre back if Dura or Siggy get injured, maybe Paul O'Grady previously from CCM.

Very happy with Ifill and Greenacre signings though!

Yes transfer fees are part of the cap, and Melbourne decided it was worth it.

Hence why they are short at the back this season (if Vargas or Muscat get injured, they're pretty f**ked. Muscat was terrible against Fulham too)

So it is quite clear to me that they aim to complete the signing of Chen and be content with the squad. I'm all for that, but what happens if it doesn't work out with this kid?
Do we have to have 20 by game 1?
and if so does that mean we are going to be rushed into signing someone like Potty or Astroclaus?

Also, do we see the possible guest signing as an option later down the track? or will we stay put with what we've got?

I'd say we are keeping spots open just in case the likes of Durante/Siggy get injured and we're left short at the back

We should just get bloody Dodd back on normal wages. He's playing for some NSWPL club.

I guess we will never know the true reason why each of the trialist did not get signed. We can speculate....Potty..too immobile. But a guy like Putter did not even get on the field in a trial game. Him and Astroclaus had good CV's....they had done the business at a good level.

There are probably many reasons.....money, money and money

Yes, because Ifill is probably costing so much less.

If the club have gone to the trouble of getting them here and funding the trial I can pretty much guarantee you they knew exactly what any of them would cost and the decision on all the triallists had nothing to do with $$

Do agree with that. But I guess us people just wanted to see Putter given a go. He came ll the way down and didn't even have a go. Guess it could be his way he approached the injury and his mentality?

At the end of the day, we havn't signed one player from our trialists...
