"DC United have an option to sign Fred for another year, but it is understood he is keen on a move back Down Under."

"He's the person we'd consider in terms of a marquee player, but I don't think we'd go for a guest."

all the right stuff coming out of the article.
And im glad he wont be considered as a guest because he might just be a bit of a distraction especially when the stint ends.

Just hope that other Aussie clubs arent as quick to make an offer, but they probably will be. But only we and the MAriners dont have Marquees if I remember right

I hope he comes back as a permanent marquee. How about we do a trade with Dc they can have Ferrante, mulligan and Diego for Fred?

Man i want Fred so much i him. Would pose huge selectiopn trouble though with players in good form to just dump them to the bench would be harsh

Id be up for that trade.  lol. well i actually would like Fred to get the number 10.  hmmm we'd have to drop lia or Brown to fit him in the lineup.

Unless you drop Daniel or Bertos?
Na would have to leave Brown in the middle I guess. Lia super sub. and Brown will accumulate yellow cards anyway lol.

Unfortunatly it would mean to have to take lia or someone else for him but if it has to happen it has to happen

As mentioned somewhere else though, Brown will no doubt receive a suspension at some stage so Lia will get a chance to shine eventually.

Better to have to many good players to choose from then the opposite!

Lia is shining already.  He has been fantastic in recent weeks.

Based on the weekend I reckon Leo might be the one looking over his shoulder should Fred turn up.

Lia still gives away way too many free kicks in dangerous positions for mine though I guess that just comes with the territory of being a DM

Plus they have been playing different roles.

Lia is definitely DM while Brown has been getting forward more. If you're going to play Fred in the middle then he's a swap for Brown.

And I agree Lia has been awesome recently.

Could.'t think of who would be in trouble if we got him. But to drop Brown or Daniell at this stage would be rough as. Leo and Lia would be the ones  trouble i think

Diego and caceras wont be happy if we did get him.

I'd expect Diego to look at an early release if we signed Fred. I can't see him being happy with an even smaller chance of playing.

probably have to disagree on this one I would rather have Lia anytime then Brown who dont get me wrong has been playing well but I think that LIa has more in his locker

How does Lia 'have more in his locker' exactly?

I wouldn't say no to Fred that's for sure. However, I wonder if perhaps we should sign a player of equal talent elsewhere on the pitch. Like another mean centre back or even better another striker to give us more options. Very happy with Ifill and Greenacre, but surely if we signed a sensational player even if only for 7 games that would increase our chances of winning games.

His range of passing for a start....
Use of his body to protect the ball
Vision
Positional play
Ability to dictate play
Tackling technique

Need I go on???

To provide a balanced viewpoint and be fair to Browny though,

He does outshines Lia in his ability to make well timed forward runs and obviously scores critical goals  for us.

Overall though, in terms of a midfield partner for the likes of a creative AM like Fred, Vinny has more of the right attributes for mine and is perhaps a little more consistent

Browny has surprised me with his form recently and as a pair, him and Lia are developing a good combo so would be a shame to break them up

RH said an injury replacement for McKain will probably come in ... Andy Boyens ? Has been or will be training with the team and good to get in some game time before the 14th. And would be a decent CB option.

I'd be surprised if it was an NZFC player.  Four weeks training with the Phoenix and no likelihood of a game unless Siggy and Dura get borked. Then there would be stand downs and issues with the move between nations and the professional to amateur siwtch so they couldn't play NZFC for a while either.

I have a sneaky feeling that Boyens and Si Elliott training with the Phoenix might be an option.  Not sure when the deals they have finish but could loan if they aren't free.  Like Simon said (ARF) Boyens in particular would seem obvious cover.

Tackling technique? Seriously? He is one of the worst tacklers in the A-League. Has put in some shockers and constantly gives away free kicks in dangerous positions. He is good at running around and hurrying players, intercepting passes and shows good strength etc. but I have seen no 'range of passing' or 'vision' or anything else you listed. Give me some examples because i'm struggling to think of any.

I like him but he's being overated by some.

i have thought for some time that Lia gets away with murder with some of his tackles

other players would almost certainly pick up yellows for stuff that Vinny (the baby-faced assassin) hardly gets a second glance for

He goes in hard but generally without his studs showing which I cannot always say about Browny... Agree he gives away plenty of free kicks but they are generally pretty "sensible fouls" which any DM should be doing.

IMO he has a good range of passing and switches the point of attack far better than Browny has been able to, his long range switches/diagonal balls are accurate and he gives away far less ball than anyone else we have had in that position. Examples, watch the next game closely and you'll see a few, one in particular against GC, hit it about 50 metres diagonally straight to the feet of Daniel which put him in a 1 v1 resulting in Thwaite being done like a dinner.......

i dont think boyens can play on the right can he? he is a centre backs centre back from what ive seen, but maybe he's more versatile - i havent seen heaps of him in fairness

We're talking about the paper saying they will bring in injury cover for McKain.  Not sure how RB has even become part of the discussion.
