My 5 cents worth;

Sydney are a very good side - they travelled over here and showed a Wellington based team how to play in a strong breeze !! They have had the better of us all 3 games this season. The good news is we don't have to play them again.

I don't think, over the course of a season, we are in the same league as Melb, Sydney, GCU or the Mariners but we are good enough to contest 5th or 6th. Up until the last week or so we have been fortunate with cards and injuries but our recruitment failures and lack of depth, are now being exposed. We did not recruit a good second striker, our efforts at recruiting a play maker have not worked out and we are still carrying too much dead wood in the squad.

We can still make the play offs but to be championship contenders will take further culling of the squad and a couple of "make a difference" recruitments (e.g. Ifill).

To make the play offs some of the players will need to do some soul searching - over the last few weeks a number have been consistently below what they are capable of.

P.S. I think the venting against Crowther is ill founded - he is unorthodox but he made the saves he had to make and was not to blame for the goal.

Good post sir and humbly agree.

The next question is who do you cull and who do you keep? You assume that Mulligan, Chen, Ferrante, Diego would be in immediate danger. Caceres is unsigned, Rojas is the future so gets the exemption card. Crowther would be looking to use the last 9 games to show he can be a better keeper. Who else would be marginal?

This will be discussed to death over the next couple of months and through the off season but as you asked;

But firstly let me say we have a very solid foundation to build on with the long term signings already made.

My must have signings would be a second striker and creative play maker - someone like Van Dyke (sp?) who has the added benefit of being good in the air at set pieces - some thing we lack - and a "Diego" type player.

My nice to have signings would be a hard arsed DM who can take charge of a game when it needs to be shut down or fired up e.g. R Aloisi.

To go would be; Mulligan, Ferrante, Chen, and Diego (who unfortuantely has another year on his contract).

Dont understand how some of you are so quick to blame the keeper for some of our losses,at times you would think that none of those in front of them were responsible for for leaving the keeper in that position.

Who would want to be a keeper for the Phoenix as given some of the sh*t that has been posted at times about Moss,Paston and Crowther its a FKN thankless position on these boards.Yep Crowther made some mistakes but its also because of him that it stayed at only 1,just maybe if some of the other players hadnt wasted the chances they had it wouldnt have stayed at that.

I don't think the team let him down, they let down Terry and Ricki though. We deserved to lose.

Totally agree, this season, we have failed to win how many times because our GK didnt put other teams away when we should have

I'd love to be a keeper. I'd love to have people talk negatively or positively. I'd love to train full time and get a good pay packet. I'd love traveling around australia playing clubs and representing the nics. Time to wake up now darkhorse lol

We have a great foundation and I think we are now a very attractive club for player to look at and say 'If I joined them, I could help tip that team over the edge to being a title contender'

I agree that Rosco is the one player we have missed the most (more than Smeltz sorry) because he had grunt, determination and was definitely a leader on the field. He had that hard assed edge that Brown and McKain dont and while Rosco was injured usually, he gave us credibility in the middle. We've only just gotten that back with Lia and Brown but we are throwing it away again. Durante is a different style of leader but he is doing it through his performances and 'follow me' style.

If Van Dyke is available, he would be a good compliment. If Charlie Miller was 10kg lighter, I'd go after him. I'd like to see them sign Chad Coombes purely for the energy, hustle and determination he brings plus versatility. He is also fit as buggery but he has discipline issues though so he'd need to sort that first. I'd also like another defender who can play both sides.

Am I asking too much? You'd probably keep Diego so as not to eat the contract and he'd shuffle down the bench further still. I think Caceres is too much of the same thing we already have.

Grumpy old bastard alert

Aside from myself Moss has never got crap on here but I agree with the rest. I don't think many were blaming Crowther for the loss, just saying it doesn't look good for the future due to his many errors today that did not result in a blow-out, but against other teams in the future we will not be so lucky. I do think we need a new keeper instead of Crowther for first team as he is not up to it as of now based on his performances this season.

Well at least I do not have to drive 2 hours back to Palmerston North after watching that game
Im already here
Im  back home in 10 minutes
My tupperance worth
We were aurful  but we have  bad against them twice this season
Durante got out of bed with the flu
We were 2 defenders down and Pastion gone
The wind was shocking Sydney did not cope as well
The crowd did not turn up
Sorry 6400 was not good enough
There was no Atmosphere all though YF did try
I will gladly drive to Wellington  in future
Sorry Palmy did not work out

Hey all,
Tonight was the first time I've gone to a Phoenix match (was great they made the effort to come to the grey wastelands of the Palmy, though I wouldn't blame the team if they didn't want to visit again haha), and yup a disappointing result for sure. Still, really enjoyed the experience and the Yellow Fever was fantastic.

Winds were pretty gusty which was always going to make things interesting but definitely not the highest standard of the play. The keeper certainly had some eccentric moments but made some good saves. Thought the ref was a bit average but of course they always are when your side loses :) Still reckon we could have nicked it at the end, had enough corners and the red card was a boost but never mind...

Still the team won a fan tonight (just watched em casually on the TV previously), and I'll have to get down to Welly to see the true Phoenix home ground. Frustrating night tho...

Frustrating night of football.
For an evening out was a good laugh... Thanks to Speights and then Cafe Cuba for theirgood humour...
Friend and daugher came to their first ever football match. Both have told me that I can tell you all that they enjoyed the eperience but NOT the result.
Shock of the night:  Friend's daughter chanting "the referee's a scrotum"....     Where did that come from??
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.
