Game to determine Nix opponents in final also streaming live tonight at same site as last night's match, coverage starting 8.30pm NZT according to site but kick-off 9.30pm NZT according to promoters.

Also the final involving the Nix on Saturday at 9.45pm streaming there:

http://www.16frames.com/Events/EventViewer.aspx?vid=1952&eid=724

"Shillong Lajong FC take on United Sikkim FC in the North East Lajong Super Series at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium Shillong at 15.00 IST. The winner of the match will play the final of the North East Lajong Super Series against Wellington Phoenix FC on Saturday, September 1 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at 15.15 IST."

Local Shillong news report on last night's Nix game (with auto slideshow of match action). Love it the Indian's call half-time "the lemon break." Also apparently the Nix goalkeepers were so unemployed they relaxed with a few tipples during the game and ended up under the bar:

"The custodian of the visitor team Glen Moss and substitute Scott Basalaj were seen relaxing under the bar as their skill was hardly tested by the local lads."

http://www.ohmeghalaya.com/royal-wahingdoh-vs-wellington-phoenix

Indian prices are great when you're a foreign visitor (I was there eight months ago and the NZ dollar has got even stronger against the rupee since - now a record high of $NZ 1 = 44.54 rupees) - I note the ticket prices for these games involving the Nix range from the equivalent of $NZ 2.20 (cheapest) to $NZ 9 (VIP seating). You can eat out in India for a dollar or two and find a tidy hotel room with ensuite bathroom for $NZ 12 . It's really tough when you come back here after some months in India to readjust to NZ prices (e.g. motor rickshaw taxi in India a couple of dollars for your entire journey vs. NZ taxi $1/ minute!).

Brilliant thinking by whoever-it-was to take that FIFA Fair Play banner on tour.  A quick photo of the lads before the match in fornt of the banner and  ... "there you go FFA, obviously an offical fixture, suspensions served, thank you very much".

And buying that cup from the local market on the morning of the match, even better  ... "here Dura, hold that up and smile".  Thank you, not only official, but competitive, no question suspensions have been served.  Clever.

I was a bit sceptical about this Indian jaunt, but it appears to be great for team building and morale.  Gotta love Gareth's  enthusiasm.

I know, I know, its serious!

Shillong Lajong FC To Battle It Out In Summit Clash Against Wellington Phoenix Today
Shillong Lajong FC will look to grab the title of “Champions” of The North East Lajong Super Series, when they take on A-League side Wellington Phoenix, here in the J N Stadium, Shillong at 3:15 pm. On paper, the match looks game, set and match to the New Zealanders, with names like Jeremy Brockie, Tony Lochhead, Ben Sigmund, Paul Ifill –the list of stars to grace the final seem endless.

For the home side though , it is a an all too similar story of a David-Goliath proportion. No strangers to being the “underdogs” yet again, the North-East side will look to upset their more experienced and stronger opponents with the same doggedness and resilient which have brought them to where they stand today. True, the odds are stacked against them, and the most recent encounter against Wellington Phoenix saw a 2-5 scoreline at Manipur, but fight they will-A characteristic which seem to have define Shillong Lajong FC for all these years.

The Reds will also look up to a new Star, a new “scoring” Sensation of sorts-Friday Gbeneme , who has incredibly scored 5 astounding goals in 2 matches, along with his hard working attacking partner,Sushil Singh and will hope that Johny Menyongar will be fit in time to add depth in the mid-field .

Indeed, come 3:15 this afternoon, all roads lead to the J N stadium in Polo, as Shillong Lajong seek to put one over the A-League side and lift the maiden edition of the North East Lajong Super Series 2012.

A massive task is at hand for the Reds, but if they really battle, fight and attack the ball, another Goliath just might be toppled, yet again.

Report on match to determine Nix opponents tonight:

Shilllong Lajong Football Club Beats United Sikkim United FC, To Face Wellington Phoenix In Final

In what was the final league game of the JPR organized “North-East Lajong Super Series”, which was played at the J.N Stadium , Shillong Lajong Football Club produced some scintillating football to outscore I-League newcomers United Sikkim FC by three goals to nil. Needing an outright win for a spot in the final against A-League side Wellington Phoenix, Shillong Lajong began the match in emphatic fashion with a 7th minute goal by Friday Gbeneme.

The newly signed Friday created havoc in the Sikkim defense and capitalized on a defensive error to slot home his team’s first goal, even as the crowd was beginning to settle down.8 minutes later, the Nigerian added another, when he scored off the rebound, which resulted from a free kick from just outside the box. The home team ,spurned on by the vivacious crowd, went on offensive mode right throughout the course of the first half, with United Sikkim having little chances at goal.

The second half saw an improved Sikkim performance, with more chances at goal, but it was the home team who looked more threatening in front of goal. Friday then put the match beyond doubt when he scored his third goal of the match, and his fifth in the tournament, sending the crowd into ruptures of elation.

Shillong Lajong FC will now square off in the Final against Wellington Phoenix FC on the 1st of September, at the J N Stadium, at 3:15 pm

"Friday I'm In Love"

<!-- start of lyrics -->I don't care if Monday's blue
Tuesday's grey and Wednesday too
Thursday i don't care about you
It's Friday I'm in love

Monday you can fall apart
Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
Thursday doesn't even start
It's Friday I'm in love

Saturday wait
And sunday always comes too late
But Friday never hesitate...

Amusing Shillong report on the "mother of all victories" on their website. Friday Gbeneme, Nigerian striker with seven goals in tournie "man of the series." Warning for the squeemish - this contains excessive and constant hyperbole and cliche:

http://www.shillonglajong.com/shillong-lajong-fc-script-upset-victory-over-wellington-phoenix-fclift-north-east-lajong-super-series-cup

Shillong Lajong FC Script Upset Victory Over Wellington Phoenix FC,Lift North East Lajong Super Series Cup
Shillong Lajong FC, added yet another trophy in their already bursting cabinet with a “nerve-racking” ,yet stupendous, 3-2 win over tournament favourites Wellington Phoenix to lift the North East Lajong Super Series 2012.

This was IT!The Mother of all victories, the zenith of all The Club’s most memorable moments, and for the thousands who thronged the Nehru Stadium ,it was sight like no other. To watch their local heroes stand toe to toe to their much fancied opponents, matching punch for punch, fighting their hearts out, and in the process ,recreating the magic which had been associated with Shillong Lajong Football Club.

For all the hype that Wellington Phoenix had generated in the League round from its two ”cakewalk” victories over Shillong Lajong FC and United Sikkim, the people of the town feared the worst when the referee blew the kickoff whistle of the match. And their fears were well founded when the visiting side found the back of the net, with yet another Jeremy Brockie goal, coming from a 5th minute set piece. The Reds though knew , that there was a ray of hope somewhere, that all was not lost. For the saga had just begun, the battle yet to be won. And the shadow of the Man Friday rose yet again to rescue the team from the pits. A touch of complacency from the Wellington Phoenix side in the 27th minute was all it took for Friday Gbeneme, who had annihilated United Sikkim the other day, to snatch upon the loose ball and slot home the ball. The crowd erupted,as if the day had been won. And just 5 minutes later, a deafening, thunderous roar greeted Friday’s second goal-a peach of a volley past the keeper, with the home crowd up from their seats. Their fists pumped, their hearts beating, their eyes welled with tears of joy,as a sense of belief slowly settled within them. The fears now started to disappear, the ghosts of the past well and truly buried, as Wellington Phoenix tried to salvage their pride and reputation. Both teams went into the second half with the home side clinging on to their hard earned 2-1 lead.

The crowd was now restless, eager to see just how much would Shillong Lajong FC wound their dream spell and web around the Wellington team. The second half was a blur to many, as the quality of the game picked up, and took the shape of top, elitist football, at its very best. The true test of the team was now at hand, as the limits were stretched, as both teams slugged and battled for glory, to reach the final pinnacle, the final barrier.63 minutes into the match, Wellington Phoenix managed to pull one back through Paul Ifill, when he scored from the spot after a handball inside the box by Govin Singh.

Truly, this was not a match for the faint-hearted. And just when it seemed that the see-saw Epic would head into extra time, another familiar name etched his name in Shillong and the North-East Football lore forever. Boithang Haokip, the man with countless goals under his kitty, scored in what will probably be the most remembered, the most cherished goal at the Stadium, and one of the most talked about in recent times. After the ball was lobbed back into the area outside of the penalty box,it fell into Boithang’s path, who made no mistake in lining up his shot and firing a well calculated volley past the Wellington keeper,in the 84th minute.

Arms raised high, the crowd went into a frenzy, as they knew a Historic victory awaits their team.On the field, its Red and White brigade defended the goal line with their lives, as Wellington piled on wave after wave of attack, with a little over 4 minutes remaining.

The anxiety, the worry, and the pressure of the crowd and the team was released along with the referee’s final whistle ,as all was forgotten in the moment of victory.

The battle was won, the names forever to be remembered, and the match, close as it was,in the end belonged to One team.Indeed,in one moment of mesmerising magic ,Shillong Lajong had emerged victorious against Wellington Phoenix by 3 goals to 2,and the title of the “North East Lajong Super Series” Champions, with Friday Gbeneme winning the “Man of The Series” award for his 7 superb goals.
