This is what annoys me about pre-season build up and friendlies you are never sure who is playing where.

I know they can't advertise these matches but a short summary afterwards on the official site?

Or even here?

The up front positions are a bit misleading though, they didn't seem to stay that fixed and as I said before, played most of the second with a player missing.

Nah all good, made it much clearer as to who was doing what.

Who was 13? Bertch?

Assume Watson was 19?

Was it a ginga? Would probably be Brindell-South (Sherminator)

right back was gulley

sherminator was at left back

13 was bertsch, was quite impressed with him

and watson was 19 - looked sharp

Starting line-up:

4-2-3-1. 20.Spoonley - 6.Brindell-South, 4.Adams, 5.Boxall, 12.Gulley - 2.Muscat, 13.Bertsch - 7.Bertos, 19.Watson, 9.Cunningham - 10.Huysegems

Lia, Boyd and Italiano (on crutches) not kitted up. No sign of Hernandez.

Phoenix looked all right in the first half but didn't create many chances in the opening 20, but held possession ok.  CF Selection looked a little bit like they hadn't played together before (which they hadn't) but got better as the game wore on.  Brindell-South looked pretty good down the left - I thought his first touch let him down a bit but once he got hold of it he had nifty feet.  Obviously a little bit affected by being a right footer on the left but I liked the look of him.  Didn't think Gulley was as good on the right, especially defensively, but he was on the far side from me (I think he gave away the peno?).

Bertsch was busy in the middle and Watson tried to get involved as well.  It looked like we were trying to walk it in at times - trying to play quite intricately around the box, when you though a crack at goal might be worth it.  So I think that's encouraging we're trying to get the close tight play going.

Huseygems definitely favours his left but it's pretty tidy so can understand why and Bertos was involved in some good moves - he definitely looks better with the freedom of being in the front third.  Cunningham was on far side and looked quick but I remember Abba getting back a few times to give him grief.  Definitely can take on players and get in behind though.

CF Selection keeper made a couple of cracking saves from Bertos, Watson and Huysegems I think.

Muscat was pretty bad throughout - gave away the ball a bit through bad passes or control.  I love Muscat but I really don't think he's the answer in there.  Would love to see him back at Right Back, bombing forward and combining with Ifill/Cunningham.

Second half was:

20.Spoonley (30.McPeake 60mins) - 3.Caira, 18.Sigmund, 22.Durante, 12.Gulley (16.Fenton 60mins) - 2. Muscat, 14.Rufer - 8.Ifill, 10.Huysegems, 9.Cunningham (23. Stevens? 60 mins) - 11. Brockie

Caira tried to bomb forward (again on far side so couldn't see much) - Fenton got forward a lot and whipped in a few nice crosses. Rufer played some gorgeous cross-field balls and wasn't afraid to mix it physically

Definitely played with 10 for last 15 minutes after Ifill came off - looked pretty precautionary to me.

Interestingly I thought Huysegems and Brockie combined well so could definitely see them playing together in season.  Huysegems nice work down the left for the first goal.

It was Muscat and Peverley in the initial scuffle but Sigmund was there pretty quick to hold Peverley down on the ground.  Probably not the smartest thing to do, but no harm down.  Peverley immitated an elbow when he got up - to me it looked like Muscat and Peverley muscling, holding each other - Peverley pulled Muscat to ground, then Muscat may have pushed forearm into Peverley's chest.  No harm doe though really.

Herbert was there watching.

he wasn't great on the ball, but was awesome off it. i spent a few minutes watching his positional play and he was doing a great job of killing things and closing the field.  on the ball, he just doesn't have the technique

Any chance of some of the central league squad making their way into Ernies eyes?

Permalink Permalink

Spoonley had Moss's top on and McPeake had Italiano's shirt on.  I'm guessing they don't have training tops for 'keepers?

McPeake made one great save about 75 mins in.

Who was the 17 for Central League (CB and captain)?  He was awesome - cut off some crucial crosses with great positioning and awareness.  Had he not been there Huysegems may have had a hatty.

Reg22 - I remeber that one - Manny was not happy at all and maybe that's why he was angry for the rest of the match.  He was captain to start with so maybe just frustrated he couldn't get his game going.

I reckon the 'keeper Campbell, centre back (17), Peverley, Abba and Elia were the standouts.  And the shortish guy playing mostly on right (16 I think??)

the biggest thing i noticed was the small difference between the two sets of players in the first half where the  CL team played more of the decent football.

abba had more than enough pace to cause the phoenix problems and peverley and his MF partner looked in their element.  no one outdid adam cowan either.

van elia could be one to watch and ryder looks like he definitely should be playing ASB prem.

the guy i'm not sure about is bill robertson, you know, he could be good enough.  i thought he was outstanding today, but when i last saw him play he was ripped apart by totori whilst playing for canterbury

The number 6 who came on for the Wellington Selection team seemed to be one of the biggest people to ever pull on a football shirt. He is not just a unit - he is a lorry load of units

All I do is make the stuff I would've liked
Reference things I wanna watch, reference girls I wanna bite
Now I'm firefly like a burning kite
And yousa fake fuck like a fleshlight

Echoing other commenters how disappointed I was with Manny today. Nix were poor in first half and deservedly behind at half time.

Concerned about CB's cover. Sigmund hotheaded after the Manny collision - he needs to haul it in or he will be spending too much time sitting out games.

Nice!

First impressions some promising new talent in the Nix line up and I'm hoping under Ernie they'll get more opportunity to show what they've got.

Thoroughly good football outing in the sun today. Many more of these fab days for the Nix home games this season please.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

OK (a bit of management w@nk bingo speak follows), so can someone give me a brief summary, high-level, helicopter view of how the squad is looking and prospects for the season?

Maybe also highlight any fish hooks that we need to be aware of in this space going forward and how our training run aligns with the club's overall strategic intent as well as ticking the boxes for intermediate outcomes.

Cheers

Great summary Energy. Awesome work for us not there.

Bill Robertson is a good footballer and plays with a physicality that would suggest that the step up for him would not be tough. He would be an import for us and I am not sure of his age. He would not be far off being naturalised but I think he would not be a poor HAL player. I'm not sure I would sign him but he would not disgrace himself if he was given a chance.

The suggestion of signing Soromon.... If we are signing him, we are desperate. Bonehead that spends more time on the side line after doing dumb stuff than playing.

Hopefully Ernie is still looking for a DM. The Bertish (spelling?) boy, if he was signed, would he be a starter or near enough to being a starter that could perhaps push out Lia/Manny over a season?

Grumpy old bastard alert

Permalink Permalink

bertsch was good today

he's not a DM as such, more a box to box player.  definitely has the goods.

martinb, were you serious about soromon being signed?  couldn't see this happening

thanks for your views on robertson, vader.  he wouldn't be a realistic signing, as we have 4 spots covered, but it's good to have discussion about who would be up to standard hypothetically - it helps us determine where the asb prem lies in terms of relative standard

ok, i'll do my best in as shorter time as possible...

other teams are stronger on paper
we'll be well organised
we will move the ball well and at a good clip
cunningham is fast, but otherwise we don't have speed up front
the right half of our back four could be suspect against the better a-league sides
we will lack flair - only ifill has the ability to pull out tricks at a-league level
will will rely heavily on durante
our midfield 3 will be hard to break down
our kids are decent, but they will need to be because we have a thin squad in terms of a-league experience
merrick has given this team really good shape and a clear playing style

something like that
