lol fair call

Big fat guys start from a stationery spot before the play starts, but everyone else can move about a bit to either put off the other team or get themselves a running start.

And the guys who aren't quite as fat, but stand on the ends of the rows of big fat guys, sometimes have to show some pace depending on how the play un-folds.

even the big fat guys are surprisingly fast. Which isn't really surprising because fat doesn't mean much. People equate fat with slow, but superheavyweight olympic weightlifters are crazy fast, and fat. Check out Steve Hamman:

Only ones with a true standing start are in the line of scrimmage, and I doubt those boys are posting good 40 yard times.

Perhaps the tight-ends may come into reckoning on your comment though to be fair. They don't move a lot before the snap and sometimes have to put the foot down.

Sorry mate, that's wrong, everyone is at a standing start before the snap except 1 designated person in motion and that doesn't happen on every play. No drama though, its a tricky game to understand the intracacies of, its just that I do.

Benched after a couple howlers earlier this season. Reddy back in town, are the Fever gonna drag him out for a night out?

Sorry I should clarify, everyone on offence [the team with the ball] starts from a standing start. The defence doesn't but they can't go over the line of scrimmage [an imaginary line through the ball]  before the ball is snapped [moved].

I'll be happy if we don't make Rose look like Messi again. Seems to happen every time against CCM.

I was mainly thinking of the defence when I posted to be fair, but was not aware of that rule for the offence.

So that's confirmation that less than half of the players on the pitch are required to begin from a standing start. Good to know.

Bugger, I didn't even know there was a handshake

Hang on: no membership card, no fridge magnet, no secret handshake, and no songsheets. Sounds like Yellow Fever Inc. is a complete shambles and needs some direction. By happy coincidence, I'm jobless and homeless at present.  :)

Budgie - is that you?

I have a couple of fridge magnets spare. Just need to reduce the big diamond a bit.

Seriously? Pick me.... let me know how to get one for my beer fridge.

Saw a bit of training at Weka Street just before. Durante not on field - recovering from a virus I think. Reira was off field receiving treatment when I watched. Haven't been to training for a while. First thing you notice is the quality of the B team in a training game. So much better than it was. Ridenton and Rufer seem similar quality, same type of skill set to me, which is encouraging.  Early days for Krishna - looked to be working things out - same for Lujic.

there's a bit of youth there Tonya, does it look like the youngsters are giving it death?

Yeah looks like better young quality to me. Had a 5 yo with me, so was difficult to trace a few in B team, as hadn't seen them for a while.

Boyd looked like he was on fire - but the player whose seemingly had a technique makeover is Lia. Seems to be a different player.

Interesting you say that tonya because I've noticed the odd touch or move from Lia recently that has really surprised me, like he's trying to show us there's a footballer under there

Good on him. Much maligned, but can't be accused of not giving it his all. I think I'll absolutely lose it if he bags a goal this season.

Yeah same. Think it was Lia who scored a beauty in practised game lobbying keeper, laid on by Brockie. Could be wrong as had my handsful with kid. But think it was him.

Dura played a part in 75% of the training, came off for the last 20 minutes, looked to be full of hard running.

Agree with your comments re Lia, IMHO he is playing the best he ever has for us at the moment.

Kenny not involved today, he was in Auckland sorting out visa's for Costa Rican duties.

Everyone seemed relaxed & happy, despite the weather not being ideal (like it usually is on the coast!!!!)

Club doing a minute applause for Ian Well pregame.

I already posted about Ian Wells in the RIP thread but just in case people don't realise the significance of this...

It's hard to overstate just how instrumental Ian Wells and John Dow were in the creation of the Phoenix. After the collapse of The Knights they did all the work on the bid and kept the idea of a Wellington franchise going for 3 months until Terry finally had his famous haircut. They did this with virtually no interest or support from NZF who were focused on finding new owners in Auckland. Without Ian's efforts it's fair to say there probably wouldn't be a Wellington Phoenix.

The club is doing a minute's applause right before kick-off, as well as the players wearing black arm-bands, and the Fever banner. All thoroughly deserved, so let's make it a good one.

Vince Lia - early season MIP?

I'm not sure that Lia has improved add a footballer, I just think he's found a fantastic partnership with Riera. His impact on the team as a whole is much improved though.

Disagree somewhat patrick, I agree on your point but also think he has improved bucket loads on his skill for some reason. My only guess is his confidence has boosted under ernies tutelage.

Lia even scored!

Brockie missed two sitters, and even he couldn't believe the second one, skewed it wide on a 1 on 1.

Krishna looked very quick and dangerous and scored a good goal. Was the tall guy on the B team Lujic? He looked a real threat.

Dunno about that, Waffles does come in for a lot of criticism. But unlike Lia, the criticism does have some basis for it.

Lia's no longer the scapegoat. But that doesn't mean he's been putting in MOM performances. Its just he's playing better.

Had Krishna still been at Auckland he would have been suspended this weekend for his send-off last outing.

And had he transferred to another amateur club in NZ that suspension would have stood.

Can anyone clarify his suspension status in converting to professional ranks?

I'm Lia's second biggest critic, and even I have acknowledge that he seems much less crap off hiding up the park.....
