Before anyone gives me stick, I've already fessed up that I got the Brockie call wrong and did that after the game.
"Ernie. Early sub of Stein (and I was the biggest moaner that it was the wrong man). "
At the point in time up until the sub, Stein was giving us more than Brockie and I think if you re-watch the game, that is still true. However the shift of Brockie from a wide right to a striker got more out of him. From that respects, I default to my signature whereby Ernie Merrick is the coach and my argument is invalid. That one change right there showed exactly why he is the boss and we are just keyboard warriors. Without the benefit of hindsight, I still would have dragged Brockie instead of Stein but on the balance of 90 min, well like others say, that call looks complete bollocks.

Yes but JV you shouldve waited till the end of the game and probably a replay before having an opinion!
Im not trying to sound high and mighty with saying this - but im actually surprised, after the last two seasons, that people still have a go at Brockie. Hes a true 'something from nothing' footballer. Yesterday was another prime example of this, seemingly shut out for most of the match but still scored.
For anyone that hasn't, go back and read this thread for the timespan of the game last night, some epic lols, people throwing toys everywhere for the first 45, so so funny
This, shows what a negative bunch of pricks there are out there in Fever Land
If I could be arsed I would copy and paste the comments of NUFC_NZ. the condradictions in the space of 45 mins are unbelievable. I wonder if Jeff Vader thinks Ernie subbed the wrong bloke still? Brockie made some mistakes early but at least he was getting into the position to make those mistakes.
As you say, some epic lols
The point you make about the scape goating is valid. Lia had a horrible first 20 and rightly deserved the shit he got but to his credit, he bought it around and I think the last 70 from him was serviceable. I still think he needs to improve but if he shows in the last 70 what he can do for a full 90 every week, that will give our midfield infinitely more than at other times when he has played there.

If I think about what pisses me off about him I see a footballer than has obvious talent and produces those genius moments like you say. Yesterday goal was a quality finish and I think others may not have finished that. I then ask 'What would we get from him if he applied himself more?" and that's what gets up me. He has talent but is capable of delivering so much more if there was more application and not this drifting out of the game for long periods thing that he does.
If I take an example, and say Brockie is invisible for (lets use a number for the purpose of this exercise but not in anyway a measure of his actual output) 75% of the game and any applies himself for 25% of it. How much better would he be, if he drifted out for say only 50% of it? The Phoenix would have an infinitely more productive footballer and I hazard to suggest, he may be playing in a better league some place else.

He who hesitates is Lia
Lia isn't exactly a new scapegoat, people have been bagging him for at least a couple of years. And yes he turned it around and credit to him but I still think he's a weak link in a pivotal position.
As for laughing at the first half angst yesterday, yeah it's funny now but how many people 20 mins into that game were sitting at home pleased with how the nix were playing? If you have the ability to see into the future and knew we were going to look like a different team later in the match I hope you spend your TAB winnings wisely. Care to tell us the result of te upcoming Jets game too?
edit: that may have come across harsher than I intended
People like Coldplay and voted for the Nazis. You can't trust people.
A couple of points for me, we settled quite well after the opening 20 minutes and actually bossed reasonable periods of the second 25 mins of the first half.
We need to remember that Caira was matched up against one of last seasons stars in Hersi, and once he settled in after that first 20 mins he did a pretty decent job against him.
Leo looked ok defensively and was a step up from Adams last week at right back, but he simply no longer has the pace to get forward with much effect. The key to a full back overlapping with success is to do it late and do it with pace. He no longer has the pace so makes his runs early which make them easy to read..
Kenny C, prepared to give him more time, but I have seen him in three matches now, Yesterday, the Roar and against the Central league selection and he has not shown much in any game, certainly not to be in the "star" class. Yes it is only two games in, but he has been here now for 8 or more weeks, training daily. It is not like he has just turned up, although at times it looks like it. Jury out, but I think he needs a big one on Sunday. Our Lord and Master Ernies patience will only last so long.
Lia is the new Brown / Lochead. Scapegoat Central! He had a mixed opening 20 minutes as did everyone else under the pressure applied by WSW and yes he gave the ball away, (Manny was no better initially), but two points in that, he often is given the ball in some tough situations with payers all around him, and he was definitely targetted by WSW yesterday with them often "double teaming" him every time the ball is played towards him. He improved as the game wore on, He wins a lot of ball, he has a huge engine and very rarely leaves anything on the park.
Once a player turns into a scapegoat, only the bad is seen at the cost of anything good he may do. When a player in a DM position gives the ball away it looks bad. Others were just as guilty yesterday, but a little less noticeable. He had a pretty good game against the Roar and I would give him a passmark yesterday.
Hicks did some good things, but he also gave the ball away. A lot. will be interesting to see how he develops.
Riera limited chance yesterday. gave the ball away a couple of times but worth perservering with and he will undoubtedly get some time in his preferred position.
Ifill, despite the pace being gone, he is still a class act. Great touch. Great vision. Others have said he is a 45 min player. His professional pride will not see him settle from that. I think he will probably start on the Bench next week and unless Kenny steps up next week, I would see Ifill back in starting 11.
What can you say about Hernandez? He was fantastic yesterday, and was one of the reasons we strted to get a foot hold after 20 minutes when he started to drop a lot deeper to receive the ball, hold it up and give everyone some time. Generally you want him in rthe attacking third, but at times he will need to do just what he did. He really seems to have the bit between his teeth and could not fault his work rate.
Those here saying Travel is not a factor, probably have never been further North than Levin. Yes it is only a three hour Plane ride but by the time you take in waiting times it is probably 7 or 8 hours from the time a player leaves home till the time they check into a Sydney Motel. Considerably worse if the are out of Sydney. The Travel is a huge factor. Ernies whole mantra has been that it will not be an excuse. Fair enough but it still is a factor and was certainly one of the reasons behind our unbeaten run at home of a few years ago
I actually do not see the hype in Hersi. Its just me but I see a grinning idiot who offers nothing and needs to harden the fuck up. Last week, there was a lol moment when me and someone else posted in the game thread against CCM that Hersi is overrated and does nothing and then 20 secs later, he scores.
I think on Caira, considering the lack of big league experience, this is going to be good for him and in a years time, we will see a totally different footballer. I think yesterday, Durante bailed him out a bit. I like that he does not sit high up the pitch and get caught out like Lochhead and Hogg did which is ironic because Ernie said he wanted fullbacks with go forward. Hicks is much the same. 3 weeks into being a pro and he does some lovely stuff but then also some stuff where you go 'thats experience' and I think him too will be a vastly different footballer in a years time. I have raved about him for a while and I am glad he is getting a shot.
Agree re Leo and I said much the same in my raving piece about 2 pages back.
The thing about Ifill and professional pride is so true. Turned 34 yesterday and he will still back himself to give 90 mins. If I was Ernie, I would take him aside and be honest. I can get 90 decent minutes out of you each week or 45 very good minutes out of you each week. How do you want to be remembered? I would much rather 45 quality minutes (and he made a few of their players look like schoolboy footballers) than 90 min where he is on and off and has a higher chance of being injured.
Kenny C will have the forum spotlight on him on match day because its the 2nd week in a row where he has been so so. Yes he has not had much of a preseason, yes he has been injured, yes it is a new league. I contrast that with Ifill who has been injured but contributed more with his battered body than Kenny does. I really hope its just an adjustment period but with each week, you do wonder.

I know the second half was good but wow, it excited you that much that you're breaking out the tissues?
Fair enough.... Certainly not meant to be smug , or even a little elitist (apparently). For me, I put myself in the bracket of being more reserved and for me mistakes do not make for a hanging offence. The first 20 minutes was always going to be tough and Wanderers were going to put us under a lot of pressure, just by virtue of the atmosphere alone and it was always going to be a case of absorbing the early pressure, which by and large we did. Not necessarily with ease, but well enough all things considered.
There are people here being all smug about it because its commentary after the fact and going 'well your opinion is shit because look how we played so what do you know'. You never see them putting their opinion out there at the time this stuff goes down though. I think the thing to remember is live match commentary is in the moment and not reflective of a whole 90. Its emotion/frustration/exuberation based on what we see right then. Yes after the fact it can be epic lols but I never saw one person say 'Well this first 20 has been utter shyte but I think we will be massive in the next 70'. By the same token, seeing a page of 'FFFFUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK YYYYYYYYYYEEEEEEAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH BBBBBBBBBRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEE' after he scored is not indicative that he had a fantastic 90 mins.
That's why I always do a long raving piece after a match and take many things into consideration. That may look vastly different to comments at the time in the game (and the sub of Stein is a perfect example of that) but it captures a full 90. Just like your nice piece did as well. Its reflective of the entire game and not snap shots in time.
To add to that, to the folk that come on here to re-read comments from the in game commentary and go 'Well your opinion is shit, what do you know' you really should check yourself and shut the hell up. Why don't you put your opinions up in game and then we can hang you up by them and see how smart you are after the fact. Regardless of the first 20 mins, I think the general feeling after the game has been positive for the 2nd week in a row and a realisation that this team its actually not too bad.

Meh, anything written during the game should just be ignored; posting on the forums and watching the game = silly jumps to conclusions and emotional language; just the same as people yelling out fuck when they're watching at the stadium.

Yep; agree with this - I always think that Brockie *might* pop up with something; in Stein's case you can sort of tell whether he will be effective or not pretty quickly.

One other thing that just occurred to me. We went to a lunatic asylum with 16k barking moonbats and deserved a point. That's impressive. I think the RBB were excellent this game. No flares, fighting, trashing shit and that's exactly the kind of behaviour that makes us go 'shit they were awesome'. Their Radio GaGa pose even had Freddie creaming up in heaven. Tip of the hat to the RBB and also our lads for turning that hand in, in that cauldron.

When Stein was dragged off, Brockie had been involved in more play. None of it had really come off but he was not invisible.
It will be interesting to see how Ernie fits these two in for the rest of the season.

The problem with Lia is that he tends to make basic errors in crucial territories - and those errors are so obvious and easily remembered (like yesterdays game, he passed the ball directly to opposition which put our backline under enomous pressure).
Scapegoat or not, it happens for a reason.
I think he just need to do the basics right, that will improve his game big time. i would rather have him clearing the ball out than losing the ball 25m in front of the goal.
I fully admit his last 70min was OK, BUT, if he continues without improving he will be the weakest link in our midfield and those basic errors he makes will cost us points this season - the errors he made yesterday gave the WSW at least 2 good scoring chances, we won't be lucky all the time.
To further back up the point I make here: in the presason match vs Auckland City his back pass created a 1 on 1 but the Auckland striker couldn't finish, in another preseason match (forgot against which team) he lost the ball 25m out and the opposition scored.
Do the basics right, that's all I want from him.
