I doubt many people would have youtube clips. Maybe next year each nominee HAS to have a short video of themself, who they r, and some match footage.

I think this highlights how poorly young players are advised in this country.

If you are a young man wanting to play professionally or get a university scholarship the one place everyone will look for you first is YouTube.  If you're not there, or at least on DVD, chances are you're average.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Might be a little harsh with the average call, but it does come across that they are not taking it serious enough.

Yeah sorry that reads wrongly.  What I mean is that if you don't have a video presence on youtube as an aspiring pro then scouts/coaches will assume you are average.

There are two ways people get places in the game: word of mouth/contacts, and self-promotion.  Being from New Zealand there are very few people with genuinely good contacts (but a lot of people who bullsh*t that they do), so self-promotion is king.

And that is why I am shocked none of the nominees have jumped on here to promote themselves. Easiest thing in the world, and to show some initiative would go a long way.

Some have.

But yes, agree.

IMO, that's all the more reason to make Youtube footage a requirement for nomination next year. Helps incentivise self-promotion, so even those who don't win the scholarship have more material out there for scouts.

I'd hate to see a good candidate lose out because their parents don't have a handycam or youtube skillz.

Will consider it.

Not sure of this happened this year or not, but I'd like to see the voting procedures revamped next year. I think it would be better if once all nominees are in, they are given say a week to press their case for nomination and try to convince me why I should vote for them over others BEFORE any voting happens. After that time frame has elapsed voting can start and no more enhancements from the nominees should be taken, and no poll updates given on the forum so people aren't tempted to just vote for the guy with the most mates...

Love this scholarship though - it gives me the feeling of actually helping the club find players :)

Made a comment about this over a week ago. I agree.

Yellow fever is doing a great job with this Scholarship. But with young Marco getting a contract via it last year, it has grown into something very big!

Just an idea! I am loving following this years Scholarship! Keep up the good work.

Perhaps each candidate should submit a CV of sorts in a standard form (previous teanms, rep teams, aspirations etc) so can be compared side by side (rather than requiring other people to post on their behalf)

was thinking about this and just having a list of 'player profiles' its easy enough and gives more indepth info.

Then people would vote for the lad with the longest CV.

Fixed.

If I didn't know any of the players ofcourse i'd vote for someone with the highest credentials. Makes more sense than voting for a friend?

Or if you didnt know any of them you could just abstain from voting rather than making an uninformed choice.

Glad you're honest.

In which case last year's winner (now Phoenix player) Marco Rojas would not have got your vote.  Overlooked for NZ selection up to now and kicked out of NZF's national academy at 14 after being told by coach Mark Elrick that he would never make it.

We have a nice simply system at the moment.  You need popularity to get on the shortlist, but looking at the shortlist now there are no bad players on it so that doesn't seem to be a problem.  Then to prevent the popularist nature of the thing taking over Ricki and I get to pick a winner off the list.

Safe as houses.

There are some good players in the nominee list that haven't got a great number of votes but I'm not convinced that any other (much more laborious) method would have got a much different result.

I think dancing with the stars has highlighted how it becomes about the popularity of the individual rather than the talent...Rodney I just dropped your ass on the floor Hyde anyone?

Keep up the good work smiffy.

Tristan Pratley Was by far the highest performing of all those this year, started every game in the national league and made several team of the month awards. Already probably one of the best NZ left backs around.

Maybe in your eyes not the voting Public, well done to everyone who was nominated, that is a good feat in itself.

Glasgow Rangers are coming to NZ at the end of September beginning of October on a talent scout, they are doing one in Auckland, possibly Whanganui and possibly Wellington(still in negotiations for Wellington).

So if these boys want a chance at having a go and think you are good enough, they are on the hunt as they don't have any money for new players and have already secured their 53rd title and a place in the Champions League next year, keep your ears to the ground.

This is fact not just hearsay.
