Why not make a statement and try and sign Gleeson?

Because it's unrealistic.

1. He's a young footballer growing his career overseas (made 28 starts for the first team last year - don't know what happened this season)

2. His wages will likely be higher than we can afford

3. He's still in contract until the end of the year

4. Even if we could sell it to him, he's valued at 750k so unaffordable

We all want the team to get the best manager and players, but you have to be realistic. We're a small club, finishing outside the play offs, playing in a mostly undesirable league for young up and coming player.

He's on US$115k.  He's probably in line for an upgraded contract but we can certainly afford to pay those wages.  What's in it for him?  Possible All White spot on offer, maybe he wants to return to NZ.  Kosta was a starter for the top team in the comp and we got him back.

Where'd you get the $115k figure? Sure we could pay that, but he's still in contract until the end of the year and an All Whites call up will happen irrespective of where he's playing (provided he's good enough). Kosta wanted to close to his family, Gleeson may want to, but lets not kid ourselves our negotiation skills would make us a better prospect.

https://www.mlsplayers.org/images/April%2015,%2020...

So $155,200ish AUD. Wonder how much Moss was on?

It's a pity the seasons are out of sync because the public availability of MLS wages must make negotiations easier for clubs.

We could have one done for us in WPX colours, with black and yellow motifs.

Any local crafties keen to be associated with a famous Wgtn brand?

I mean, sure we are a bit of a garage project, but not something you would call a parrot dog.

If he'd only had one swallow, there would have been no problem.

Only ticks two of those boxes.

At least he ticks the right two. With game time etc he can get better but if he was a 35 year old Bulgarian he couldn't all of a sudden get younger or un-Bulgarian.

He's had plenty of game time at the club (mainly for the WeeNix), and he hasn't got any better in the areas that are the concerns... so I'm not sure why just giving him more gametime willy nilly would change that at all.

From the latest email:

At present, we have fifteen players from last season’s squad contracted for the next campaign, with three or four more to be confirmed in coming weeks

Yep, he is off contract. These are the Aussies coming off contract (plus Paartalu who isnt on this list)

Seen Orient play three times this season.  A big NO THANKS.  He let in some proper shockers.

Wouldn't mind Scott McDonald, Robbie Kruse or James Meredith. The rest.. Meh.

Plus I doubt we'd get any of those.

Because goalkeepers get better with time and experience.  Just ask Doloras.

I would retain Italiano ahead of getting an unknown quality keeper from third grade UK comp, unless it is Italiano who wants out.  But why would he? Isn't this his best chance at the Nix to take the prime goalie spot, as Mossy has decamped to Newcastle?  If I was Welnix I would not try to fix what ain't broken, and keep our money for our new coach's shopping list.

To quote myself, I've just seen Kruse and Holland have been linked with Newcastle. Apparently very injury prone these days.

This article refers to Sam Mason-Smith as a current Phoenix player? Possibly given up on Watson, but wouldn't SMS use up a visa spot.

he's not a Phoenix striker. Article is wrong.

Hah hah, yes, but you reach an upper limit eventually. I'm not sure I'll get any better, for example. As for Sail, I haven't watched much of him so I'd appreciate other people (particularly keepers or keeper coaches) commenting on whether they see a continuing upward trend.

Do people honestly rate Italiano? I appreciate he's a young lad and we want him to succeed, but he looked shockingly poor imo.

He had a few good games and a few off ones, enough for me (at least) to think that we should give him a fair shot.

Sams been in NZ since 2011 so may be able to become a Kiwi? Certainly a better option than Watson

In the ASB/SS Premiership Mambo has had some shocking games but he also had a bunch of kids ahead of him most of the time. He was the best keeper in the WA NPL last season and has 3 clean sheets in 6 games at A-League level (small sample size I know), so should at least be looked at by the new Gaffer. Heading back to Aussie in order to get some game time is probably a good move for him, the Gaffer can go see him in person in order to make a decision.

He looks like a tipical Nix senior when playing DOWN in reserves.

We have seen the the best prospects play DOWN when not happy.

I've never said he is the best keeper in the league. I said he is a decent young keeper and has no visa complications or health issues that would be a problem for him to stay at WPX.

Under normal circumstances he needs a few years before he is a reliable first choice keeper - but with Moss leaving, he is my first choice keeper. It's a great chance for him to prove he should hold down the first keeper spot. I would not cut him loose unless he wanted to go, or unless he ha a better offer elsewhere. Our outfield needs more investment than our goalie.

Wasn't singling you out mate, it was a general comment as I've seen others here who rate him - which I find odd.

He came here once, looked at the training ground and took a taxi straight back to the Airport, so Im thinking its unlikely. Plus he has barely played the last few seasons, not worth the cash he would want.

He might also violate the no dickheads policy, if the new coach still has that rule.

If the club observes that policy that may explain why it takes so long to decide / announce the new coach.

Since we've already signed a contract with a coach, I wonder if we will make a signing or two before he's unveiled?

Would James Holland be a good shout? or is there a problem with him? Considering he was in China it might be safe to say he won't be affordable, but he could slot in for Lia right?

Chris Herd too, Aussie, just been released from Gillingham. He'd certainly be cheaper, more versatile (whole defense + DM) and less of a dickhead

Given the rumours out of Adelaide, sounds like he'd definitely violate the 'no dicks' policy

I wouldn't mind giving Chris Herd a go, however given the trouble he had relocating his family to Perth when he played there which eventually caused his relase, it might be a long shot.
