And most likely him taking a pay cut as he'd be unlikely to be marquee.

But maybe the new manager wants to spend his wages elsewhere.

To make things more interesting

Fahid Ben Khalfallah is also an aging, foreign attacking midfielder who has played his best football already and he signed for the Roar!

Broich and Khalfallah are more wingers though. For the position that Gui plays speed and stamina isn't as necessary as the other two.

Gui is also 4 and 5 years younger than the other two.

Both play a bit more centrally and cut in more often now their legs are failing them.

Yes, so we have a player who is younger than the other two, who plays in a different position (and his preferred position) whereas the other two are having to adapt to his position because of age. Thomas and Fahid are/were better quality players than Gui as well

It really isn't a like for like at all.

It depends what we need/expect from each player. If we buy an aging player and need them to perform like they were 25 that's on us. If we buy an aging player and accept that they are a contributor, not the centre of our attacking plans, that's more realistic.

Our problem last season was that we had several players below what we wanted from them for some time at the start of the season: Roly, Gui, Kosta, Watson and Mikey was injured for a long period of time.

If Gui had contributed as he did, but the other players hadn't also had poor season, we'd have been less unhappy with him.

Broich only played where he did because Roar don't play with a 10, so without the ball he often had the responsibility defending the left side. He became the 10 very often during a game. He was also very good when played as a false 9 (one of the better hal games i have seen vs victory with Broich scoring a great freekick under the wall) and a lot of the time in Germany he played as a deeper more central midfielder. It's like you wouldn't want Ninkovic either because he didn't 'start' as SFC's 10

When did I say anything about not wanting Broich?

All I said was that he's not a like for like player with Gui, Gui is younger and plays in a different position. That's it.

I like the sound of Urby Emanuelson. Not the greatest player, and certainly not on the best form, but he'd be one hell of a high profile signing considering his 17 caps for Netherlands and great experience with Milan, Roma, Ajax, Fulham etc. Can play anywhere down the left, centre or defensive mid, and right back from what i've seen of him, and he's just been released by Sheffield Wednesday. Might seem like a dinosaur, but he's only 30, he could slot in for Lia or on either flank when needed.

Also like the look of this guy: https://www.transfermarkt.com/abdou-traore/profil/...

Seems Riera-esque.

Again, both play as an attacking midfielder, Broich hasn't played as a genuine winger for quite a while.

Admittedly its probably an over reaction from the u20's but what about asking Sunderland if we could loan Woud in for a season? Playing some first team football might be good for his development.

100% think we should be making a play for one of the NZ keepers out there

He would blend in rather nicely into the Nix squad.

Do you think discussion about players to bring in was part of the coaching interviews? So the new coach might already have some players in mind and which he has contacted?

good god I hope so, with the players we have lost so far and the free agents that are being snapped up by other clubs at the moment while we have noone in the driver's sent we may be left picking up the dregs.

The rumours about him leaving were in full swing whilst Ernie was still here, so I'm guessing no.

You have got to be kidding - virtually any of those players (bar a couple) would improve our paper-thin squad...

Yep. Georgievski, O'Donovan, Izzo, Neville, Moss (lol), Williams, ROLYYYYYYY, Thwaite, Baro would all improve our squad.

Moss, Thwaite and Baro being the only transfers on those that weren't sorted months ago. The delay in appointing a manager has cost us Moss but it hasn't meant we have missed out on any quality free agents from the AL, all good ones were sorted many months ago.

you mean the many months we had two assistant coaches running the team under a no transfer talk policy? If we'd signed a manager originally we could have been in contention for keeping moss and roly and potentially picking up some of the above - if required.

But, players were re-signed under Des and Greenacre, and Roly was already going before Merrick resigned - his family left after the earthquakes.

re-signed yes, but no new players to replace "known" losses. Earthquakes or not having no coach certainty would make leaving a lot easier

Who cares how long it takes as long as we get the right people, Roly was one of our last signings the year we signed him if I recall.

They said that the new coach has spent a couple of weeks looking over our squad and will make re-signings, no doubt he's also been kept in the loop about possible future signings. Just because we're not signing anyone doesn't mean that we're not talking to them.

The only clubs which are active at the moment are the Jets and CCM anyway most clubs seem to be biding their time so we're no different from anyone else.

So, the ones who need to catch up to the Top 6? So, that would also include us?

I'm not worried, yet, but seeing everything happening around us a little nervewracking..

The other way of looking at it is that they're the teams who are desperate and any available players would raise the quality of their squads. We have a good squad and just need to target a couple of key positions, we also have two foreign slots to do it with.

Only a couple of players on the list of transfers are proven winners, most are average or slightly above average.

Ifill and Greenacre were also last minute signings. I don't think the timing of the signing has any correlation at all to the quality of the player. Certainly has an effect on supporter anxiety though...

imo it's most important to have a top class (i.e. top 5 players in the league-class) midfielder; whether that's an import or an Aussie/Kiwi.

A-Rod and Gui aren't at that level.

With Roly gone, we've lost that - I don't think spending that import spot on a RB will propel us to top 4.

TBH Roly was only at that level for about 4 or 5 games last season. But yes we need a quality midfielder if we can find one, if being the word.
