2017/18 Transfer Speculation

i vividly recall a front three of Krishna, WeeMac and Burns causing all sorts of trouble at Eden Park against Adelaide (i think) - later that season teams worked that out a bit and we needed a plan B but i think it's a pretty good plan A.

I remember why it was so dangerous was because Krishna and Burns didn't operate in the outside channels but in the inside ones and WeeMac would drop off into the midfield three, his movement would cause the opposition defence to become staggered.

When teams dropped deep and kicked us a lot it stopped being effective - then maybe a more direct/physical centre forward would be useful.

Not sure where Finkler fits in - possibly he could play the false 9 role?  might be a stretch as he isn't that mobile.

Too bad sack wacker got injured that year.

Is he still playing?

working for the Jets in some kind of football advisor role or something

I don't think we can be too picky. If Burns came, would be over the moon.

which was a shame, because he was a breath of fresh air from the usual fapfest

Bonevacia just started trying too hard to do everything when we were struggling as a team. When we were a functioning unit, he was one of the best in the league. Anyone underrating him has rocks in their head. Even when half injured and not playing well, he still did things that no one else in the team could do.

Don't be surprised to see him rip it up at WSW next season.

Ifill is the best we've had because his performances coincided with the best team performances as well. Plus he's a good bloke.

100%.  The big problem was Ernie signed Finkler to play as an attacking midfielder and moved Roly back.  He was always a much better player close to goal.  His work rate was an issue but he's up there right at the top of the league in terms of talent.

Reckon Paartalu is extremely overrated.

We had about roughyl zero % chance of signing him

Zero chance? On what basis? Thought we had a good chance considering Rado worked with him. India not the most enticing place to play football/to live.

On the basis that he appears to love the cash.

“We have two promising ‘keepers at the club, and I look forward to bringing in a third good young player.

Guessing this will be a youth player. Maybe Conor Tracey or Cameron Brown?

Boxall is now a free agent. Would add depth to the backline.

What about one from their academy - Keegan Smith?  younger than both the above, already in the Nix system.

Yeah my first thought was we should go for him - but we do already have 4 CBs. I think he's a beast though and can play RB too, and I think he looked better at CB for the AWs than Dura did too.

Would seem to be surplus to requirements.

Shows how much of a travesty the 2-yr triggered extension was for Ryan Lowry

Well we only have one RB option at the moment, so he could be signed for that. Galloway can push for either FB position, and Doyle has had some injury issues in the past too

Dura out and Boxall in would be a dream. Not gonna happen though.

Boxall and Rossi as CB's would destroy opposition attackers. Would be great to see.

According to the twitter conversations around this SuperSport tried to keep him but couldn't agree to terms, considering they massively outbid us to get him there I can't see us being in the game. The general talk is that after the season he just had he'll be off to a better league in Europe.

Any word on how he settled & enjoyed SA life? Money is one thing, peace of mind is another

He's not a right back.  I thought he looked good at the confeds but his positioning isn't great.  He makes up for it with great athleticism so maybe someone in a bigger league will take a chance on him.  I think he could be great with the right coaching

Been playing exclusively at RB for Supersport. Was good for us as a RB before he left. Why don't you think he should play there?

The modern right back is an attacking player and I just don't see that part of his game as well developed enough.  He isn't a great crosser and his passing etc is only ok.  He played RB for us in a pretty poor Phoenix side.  I haven't seen him at all in South Africa so can't comment about that but I think he's a centre back.

He played RB for us the season we came 4th under Ernie. I think he's a better CB  but is a more than capable RB at A League level. Same sort of player as Trattbut quicker and more experienced

Would create depth for the flanks and would push Durante for a starting spot... that been said, would love to see him move to Europe.

Has any of Boxall/Lowry/Fox ever played in a more midfield role?

That being said, we would be crazy to turn him down. For one, he's taller than 6 foot, so we might win a few more aerial battles this season

I reckon the only CB that could make a decent transition to a Defensive Midfielder would be Rossi. I'd like to see Boxall back just to have someone with the hunger to chew the shark out of Kosta. Can't seem to recall having any mongrel to our defence since Siggy and Manny to a lesser extent.

Probably more a rumour for next season, but what about Apostolos Giannou?

Striker struggling to break into the Australian team, who could totally do with a change of club & scenery (getting away from China).

Could possibly be released earlier if another striking option comes up for his team - he's only appeared twice this season

Ernie tried to sign him when he was playing in Greece, just before he was selected in the Greece national team (since swapped to Aussie). Maybe we still have his agents phone number?

Failing that, try the second volume of Wellington White Pages, the L - Z volume, and look under "Serepisos, T.".

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Mentioned this briefly on the A-league transfer thread, but Mark Bridge just got released from his Thai club. Anyone think he would be a good signing and/or we have a chance at getting him?
