With everything that FIFA have to look after, I very much doubt that television coverage of the A-League in NZ is something they would get involved in. FIFA are only involved in the television rights for FIFA competitions - what right would they have, let alone desire, to get involved with this argument?

Why would Fifa want to get involved? How about concern for the health of their game in all corners of the world?

Of course Fifa aren't going to withhold World Cup rights from Sky because they're screwing up the A-League. But power is a wonderful thing. And Fifa has it. So much power they can afford to talk quietly because they carry such a big stick.

Imagine if Sky management got an email from someone in Fifa. Letting Sky know how much Fifa appreciates everything the broadcaster is doing to promote the beautiful game in their patch. Especially Sky's support for the A-League which has Fifa very excited because of Australia's emergence as a powerhouse in world football.

How would Sky respond? Tell Fifa that, sorry, but they have too much kayaking, old golf tournments and snail racing to screen and that the A-League is not a priority? Yeah, right.

They would be stupid to risk even a frown from such a powerful organisation. Keeping Fifa onside is important to Sky's long term plans. Who knows what other broadcaster/webcaster might spring up down the track to threaten Sky's hold on footballing rights.

I believe the outcome of getting such a simple email from Fifa would be a sudden boost in Sky's live coverage of the A-League.

Yep, just the thought of Fifa's big stick could do wonders.

It's a nice fantasy, but it's still a fantasy. FIFA do not get involved in domestic television squabbles. They have influence over the FFA, but not Sky, TVNZ, BBC etc not to mention that FIFA have nothing to do with the A-League television rights.

Yeah, emails each week so far. This week's catalyst being the last minute change to Tuesday's morning delayed match and their helpline's mantra about live sports having priority being completely inaccurate as an excuse.

I've got it....

Apart from Phoenix games (which are all live of course), there are four other live games scheduled in September, which I guess fulfils their promise of two live games per weekend.

The non-Phoenix ones are...

Thursday 3rd - Melbourne v Newcastle @ 9.30pm NZT

Friday 11th - Adelaide v CCM @ 10pm NZT

Friday 18th - Adelaide v Melbourne @ 10pm NZT

Friday 25th - Newcastle v Perth @ 10pm NZT

Two months into the new season and we still won't have seen Gold Coast live.

In terms of importance/marketing....

Why is Jest v. Glory being played? Melbourne and CCM have Kiwi connections, so those other matches I can understand.GCU v. Victory is being played that round...Smeltz v. Moss, that's a game I'd watch

I gather the friday slot suits sky better than the other games, Robb.

I don't understand why they couldn't have replayed last nights games at 11:30pm rather than 1:00am. No one would have sat up to watch the winter games highlights surely?

Well, it's not A-League, but I now notice that the A-holes at SKY have dropped the Live Chelsea-Burnley match tonight for some delayed Rowing.   AHHHHHHH

While I understand some local interest in Rowing, it comes as no surprise that football makes way, while Formula 1 practice and Winter games/Golf keep their slots.

I despair.

I know, I know, its serious!

Rowing, Kayaking. The Sky sports Boss probably doesn't know the difference. After all, more New Zealanders watch Kayaking than football.

no thought whatsoever has gone into the fixtures they have selected as far as which games would appeal to NZ fans. they have obviously just selected whichever games fell in the slot with the least conflict.I think that says a lot about how much anybody at Sky actually thinks about their A League coverage and the extent they are interested in growing their A Leauge audience.

I know, only noticed this earlier and I was planning to watch the game too!! DELAYED rowing coverage instead?! Is anyone really going to stay up late to watch the delayed rowing????

I would wager that far more people would've stayed up to watch an EPL match than delayed rowing? Myself and a mate are certainly 2 of those people, and he's the only person I've spoken to about it.

Total joke, but of course it's no surprise.

What's with the constant coverage of these Winter Games? What a load of shiite.

Wonderfully succinct summary.

As one who cant be farked, I do recall discussion around the option of increasing broadband allowance and watching games thay way.

Any idea of the relative cost of this compared with monthly subs for SKY?

Can you give me an idea of who your current broadband plan is with?.  I gave up all Sky two years ago and now have a 40GB plan with Telstra.  I pay no more than I did two years ago with a 5GB plan and Sky/Sky Sports.  I am struggling to use my 40GB a month, really need 30GB or a plan where you pay as you go.  Streaming uses little of my datacap, I guess I could watch all the a league matches each weekend and use between 1 and 1.5 GB.

Problem is,id miss other sports too much

Cant watch cricket on broadband, would cost a fortune, thats probably the worst example, but A league and cricket on tyop of other sports,it isnt worth switching to soley broadband. Same goes with any internet TV channel set up (forget what its called...on the page before this),it may be initially free, but the cost of bandwidth has to be taken into account.

So between a choice of many other sports, and just A league, one has to stick with sky and just be content with good old highlights packages rather than spending money on a larger broadband cap

Lay a complaint at the Broadcasting Standards Authority for false advertising as Sky is advertising ''full coverage'' of the a-league, under20s and Epl. I dont think personally that it is full coverage of the a-league. Thoughts?

I did read in the article on ziln.co.nz
www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/technology/2805975/NZ-TV-options-to-expand-with-launch-of-Ziln

..."TelstraClear would wait for six months to see how Ziln fared and would then consider whether to "zero-rate" the television service, which could mean its 400,000 customers would be able to watch without eating into their broadband data allowances."
Now we could be getting somewhere??!! Fingers crossed

That's right Bopman... this was noticeable in recent adverts, whereas,as I recall it, initially ads featured
"live coverage of the A-League" in the pre-season.
If that was correct then perhaps Tommy's point is still valid ...if that's what Sky said in their ads initially it might be argued that it was false or misleading advertising.

We bought into MySky expressly for the A-League, its coverage has been poor to date, its customer services impersonal ..less CRM auto,mate!... and we are considering our options.

Sky may have the opportunity to redeem themselves.. I fully expect it to improve as rugby and league seasons finish...we will see.

Again i go into "reasonable expectation"

Their slogan is Live sport live sport,in that very same advert they talk about the A league coverage coming up over the next month...you would expect anyone to relate the slogan said in this ad,to the mentioning of A league.

Also they have advertised the A league the same every other year, and every other year we have got a better deal in terms of games,it is reasonable expectation for someone subscribing to sky (or keeping their subscription) to expect the same service that has always been given.

I also tend to remember they said "the wellington Phoenix and the A league" in the ad,meaning nix live plus others...thats how i saw it anyway

[QUOTE=clark007e]after next weekend i would expect coverage to increase with half the amount of NRL games on tv since their into playoffs.

Except that its not exactly the NRL stopping some games beign shown live, its replays of rowing etc...so if theyre keeping the same attitude, then A league coverage shouldnt change. Theyll have even less of an excuse to not show it however so yeah it probably will change somewhat.

Red Ged,that would be amazing if telstra set that deal up

My response from Sky, after writing to them stating that after considering the football coverage we would not be subscribing to Sky TV:

Thank you for your email.

SKY TV is committed to showing coverage of the A-League. The early games were all put into the schedules late and therefore had to be delayed. From October all Hyundai A-League games will be scheduled LIVE if possible or delayed later the same day.

We hope you will continue to enjoy this and all the soccer that both SKY and ESPN are able to screen.

Please feel free to contact SKY Television Customer Services on 0800 759 759 for further information, alternatively please respond via return email and we will endeavour to reply within 24 hours.

With kind regards,

SKY Customer Services Team

NRL is one of the reasons why Firday and Saturday night games haven't been shown.  Over the last couple of weeks there has been live cricket, live NRL and live NPC on at the same time on firday and saturday nights.  Hence no a-league

Yes but you misunderstand,I know its the reason why some of the games havent been shown, but some games have been because of replays of sh*te.

So i was trying to say it wont completely change skys coverage of the A league, because theyve had chances to show some games live but still chosen not to. Of course theyll show one or two more games than they are now,but only because itll look even worse than now and they cant fall back on the "NRL and rugby games mean we cant show A league, sorry" excuse. But theyll still try dodge as many games as they can get away with as theyre doing now

Great.  Now, if you are indeed not a customer, you can have Sky installed and if they fail to show evey game on the same day it was played, then get disconnected and demand a refund of any installation fee.  If they refuse, complain to Commerce Commision or Disputes Tribunal or whatever suitable avenue available.  You really can't lose after this official promise.

In this instance, they are not lying. They are not saying the draw was done late, they are saying their decision to include them in their scheduling was made late. Don't forget that Sky's original plan was to scale back on previous seasons and not use their A-League rights to give us any non-Nix games at all.

I don't understand why, for example, this coming weekend sees a 7 day old repeat screening of last weekend's Tottenham-Birmingham match (SS3 2:30am-4:30am) instead of using that slot to give us a more timely broadcast of one of the three A-League matches being skipped.
