I did that but it deleted after the weekend. Still, not too hard to re-enter it for next weekend

I agree,I have no idea how i used to get by without it. I just spend all Sunday or Monday watching sport now...I too do shift work at nights.

You could last season, but occasionally missed a game.

This season it won't let you link live games (yet), delayed and replays it will say it is linked, but I haven't seen any in the planner...

This isnt the UK or Australia. It is sh*tty little NZ with a population of 4million. We only just got Tivo and mysky etc.

It also cost money to get the rights to show those games in the early hours of the morning,so while it would rate very slightly higher than a replay of something, itd also cost them more for maybe a handful more viewers. The Uk and Australia have economies of scale, those games in the early hours of the morning, proportianately would rate the same in Aus,but theyd still get a lot more people, therefore it is more likely to be worth it.

You have to stop with the "they do it in other countries" argument because it doesn't stack up. The rugby channel barely survives here and that is our national sport, how do you think a channel dedicated to our 3d or possibly even 4th rated sport would go,with most of the games being played between 1am and 4am?

I guess we'll never know if it's never tried...There is plenty more material for a football channel than there is for the rugby channel for starters, plus the majority of it is on Sky anyway - no wonder it doesn't survive! What I would envisage was taking all/some EPL off of Sky Sport and moving it on to a football channel, and including plenty of stuff that is not available elsewhere.

Of course your argument is completely valid in terms of population/ratings...it's just frustrating.

They could still get that red button though...there's no argument against that!

Yeah or they could just open up the highlights channel at least, for games that are on whilst league etc is.
.
Im going to go on assuming there is some cost or complication involved in doing that,so that i stay sane and not angry . Once the league stops itll be all good, and we do get midweek games now too, which should be shown.

I was absolutely flabbergasted when I was channel hopping the other night(latish) and there was this programme with goals and news about the championship league,1 +2...fantastic

I liked the A league Highlights half an hour with Dennis hosting. Gives it more of a Kiwi feel.

Still would like to see a 15 minute buildup to home games. But Sky much better than last year

Watched the english championship highlights last night which was great, particularly to see the mighty Tommy Smith score the mighty Tractor Boys' first goal of the season.

Sent sky some positive feedback about it so they know people are watching, but said "next step:  a football channel".  i'd personally like to see them pick up the Bundesliga as well, since it is the only major european league not currently shown anywhere else on nz tv at all (unless you count Deutsche Welle's half hour magazine show, which can be seen if you have Telstra Clear on channel 88).

All this talk of a Football Channel baffles me, I dont think the Rugby Channel is successful at all so I can't see why Sky would risk expanding into Football specific Channels and if they were going to expand wouldn't they go down the Cricket path first?

Plus Rugby they already have rights to most of the competitions they show or they are just paying broadcast costs, they will have to pay for football rights which makes it even less financially viable.

It should be noted that we can't even find a commercial partner to back the NZFC, or to pay for a highlights package of it so someone to pay for coverage of the Hungarian Premier League seems unlikely.

Yawn. Funnily enough there are loads of people in Scotland who feel much the same way about the A League.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Agreed, hence I doubt there is much clamour for SkySportsUK to shell out for rights to broadcast it.

given up reading about half way through the thread... but I guess it goes like this

Saturday nights are jam packed right now..... they only have 3 sports channels, and Sky don't utilise sub-channels (ie red button type stuff).  On that they often have rugby, league, cricket, football, F1, something random to fill those with.  Logically (IMO), the first thing to ditch is non-Nix A-League

Coverage tree goes something like this (from my random observations)

Rugby > Warriors NRL > Black Caps > Phoenix > Other NRL > F1 Qualifying > Other A-League

I've probably forgotten something.

I guess the only way to change this is vote with your remotes.

:edit:  in regard to increased football coverage.  There is an easy and simple answer.  Sky could come to an agreement with Setanta Australia to resell their channel here.  The only thing is it'd need to be slightly repackaged to take out some of the rugby that clashes with Sky's existing rights.

You can already get Setanta here, it's just they won't sell you a card if you live in NZ.

Setanta would be good.

Re: that last line...how do you get it then?? If you know someone in Aussie, you can get them to get a card, and they send it here? Surely it can't be as easy as putting the card in the Sky decoder and Bob's your uncle?

You will need another set top box, that can handle an Irdeto card.  It MUST have an Irdeto card reader in it.

You will need a dish that can point to Optus D2 (Sky use Optus D1).  Not an overly large one, one the size of a standard sky one (75cm) will usually suffice.

You then get your Australian friend to go here and sign you up

Easy peasy.  I used it before they revoked all subs from NZ about 12 months ago   All cos Sky cracked the s__ts with them apparently.

Interesting - how does one acquire a satellite though, and who could install such a thing?

Sorry, I should've stipultated that I require a complete idiots guide to this...

I am also in rented accomodation, so not sure how the landlord would feel if I attached a second satellite to his property...?

Doesn't look great for this weekend.  The Phoenix game is the only live one out of the five ... Friday night's game is on Saturday morning, Saturday night's two games are on Sunday morning and Monday morning and Sunday's late game is also on Monday morning.

How many times does it have to be said. SKY are a business, all they are interested in is ratings. Other things obviously rate higher than A League football, which is why it gets the slots it does. Whether we like it or not.

It's not rocket science.

Give me a break, it's got nothing to do with ratings. Sky didn't show the NQ-Sydney game on Saturday night because they were showing a replay of the previous night's Newcastle-Heart game.
If they aren't showing live A-League games because of "ratings" then logically how could screening a delayed A-League game instead of a live game deliver higher ratings?

Not cherry picking individual games, I'm talking generally. The basic principle still applies, football isn't SKY's priority.

The schedule on SS3 Saturday was thus - 6.30-8.30 New-MH replay 8.30-9pm Red Bull Action Sports  9pm-9.30 Premier League Preview then at 9.30 they showed the live Tards-Glory game

The NQ-Syd game started at 7.15.

There was simply no excuse for not showing the game.

Not cherry picking individual games, I'm talking generally. The basic principle still applies, football isn't SKY's priority.

It's not about ratings - well at least not directly. It's about subscribers. Keeping existing ones, and attracting new ones (note that ratings do serve as a indicator of a programming change impact on subscriber numbers).

Unfortunately, Sky's hold an rugby, and hence its relationship with the Rugby Union is a critical success factor in this country. Pay TV is not a viable business proposition without comprehensive Rugby coverage in this country. Relationships with the powers behind NRL would also be right up there.

Therefore, the relationship (with NZRU) involves a lot of mutual support (Murray Mexted was allegedly fired for daring to be critical about the Rugby Union on the box). That environment makes life hard for anything that upsets the equilibrium of the traditional power-house TV sports.

Sky have kind of got us by the balls, as the only way they will take notice will be by impact on subscriptions, and the various antics that make getting access to competitive viewings difficult (setanta / foxtel) mean that we virtually have to cut off our noses to spite our faces. Ie, leave in numbers and miss the coverage we are getting (which is actually an improvement on last year).

I suspect that continuing to be vocal (and reasonable!), and make helpful suggestions has had some impact, and we just continue along those lines.

I know, I know, its serious!

If we can get everyone on this forum to donate say 500-1000 dollars at first we can buy rights to broadcast our own f**king football matches and then say "f**k you" to SKY and then get NZ'rs to join us and donate some more money to buy rights to more leagues and we will be un-stoppable !!!!! Screening live football 24/7 !!!!!!!!!! SKY goes bust because members cancel their subscriptions and join us, we start raking it it with everyone who donated getting about $30,000 back.

the whole NZ population will be like "f**k yea thanks to Whooooooo from the YF forums for coming up with this brilliant idea we can watch live football and make huge profits !!!!!!"

then I get keys to the city and make billions and with all those billions I make, I give it to the Wellington Phoenix FC to sign stars such as Paul Scholes and David Beckham.

so really, EVERYONE WINS (except for SKY but we'll just ignore that)

all right, I'll start taking details from people who are willing to join me !!

Who's in ?
