Murali and the SL attack (minus Vaas) is a far more reasonable example.

Or, how about this: Daniel Vettori would never have gotten 300 test wickets if NZ had another half-decent spinner at the time.

Surely a fast bowler is more effective when there is another good fast bowler at the other end? The Vettori example is fair enough.

I don't think it is out of the question that Brockie has another season where he scores about 15 goals. I think most of the criticism directed at him was that he didn't drop back or work hard in midfield. He also missed a lot of tap ins and then scored a lot of screamers as well.

It seemed to be the consensus that the only reason Brockie cleaned up in 12-13 is that the rest of the attack was as useless as a chocolate teapot. The same could be argued for Stein in 13-14. Similarly to how Richard Hadlee's skills with a cricket ball were magnified by the fact that the next best fast bowler in NZ for most of his career was the "Naenae Express" Ewen Chatfield.

I think I get your point, but the examples aren't close. Stein & JBrok maybe, but Hadlee ripped shit up consistently for years and years and was world class. Hate the term but he certainly was exactly that. Not similar at all.

400 plus wickets don't lie..imagine if Hadlee had taken 40 plus games to take his first wicket for his country.

I regret using the cricket metaphor now. Never mind.

There is more to the story. Note he has changed agents since.

It was previously mentioned as well (I can't recall by who) that he was screwed around by a club (the Roar?).

Does anyone know anything more than just supposition?

More importantly, as I recall, Hadlee was both fast and got swing and movement off the seam, so he could entice batsmen to take a shot outside the line.

Chatfield relied more on movement off the seam but regularly put the ball in the same position and on line so that batsmen played defensively.  He was a regular 'dot ball' bowler which frustrated the batsmen.

A great bowling team.

I would pick Stein as more of a Gavin Larsen, dibbly dobbler.

Or a Coney even. Both about as fast as each other. I used to love the way Coney would bowl a ball and if he didn't like the look of it he'd run down the wicket, catch it before it got to the batsmen and go back and try again. Once famously took more wickets in a test than Hadlee.

I dreamt that Stein came back last night.

I wonder if Miller being cut by the Roar opens the door for a return to the a-League for Waffles? He is a known quantity, would suit their style and afaik is a free agent, so could sign straight away. They could do much worse than offering him a deal for the rest of the season.

I have a feeling I seen him at Dressmart in Onehunga a few weeks ago. Is he still in NZ?

Brisbane already have Solorazano, Henrique and Kurtisi on their books. It would be strange having 4 visa strikers even if they have been struggling to score.

So far I have seen the tempo of the game increased this season, viz. Perth or Victory. Stein might struggle with adjusting to that.

In other words, he is not as fast a bowler anymore :-)

JCS is a bust, he has been rubbish for awhile now. They need someone to take the pressure off Broich, atm people close him down as he is the only creative player in their midfield. I could see him slipping into Pet Rat's role.

@Mainland FC: The Roar don't really play at a high pace, they are more about keeping possession and waiting for openings. Something that Waffles would excel at imo.

You may be onto something there.

Waffles has never been particularly fast, so he could take the role played by Berisha.

And I bet he'd get fewer red cards.

From a post I saw on facebook this morning he appears to have a new contract.

His page says he's still a "Voetballer at Wellington Phoenix FC", and appears to be living in Heist-op-den-Berg. Cant see anything else though, most of his page is private.

His post was in Dutch/Flemish (unfortunately I don't read either) and has a picture of him in a team shirt.  My phone won't translate facebook, so will check it tonight

Dessel Sport gets Stein Huysegems back to Belgium
  • Twitter The Football Farm

Huysegems leave New Zealand after two years.

WED 11/05/2014 - 19:03Stein Huysegems has a contract with second division Dessel Sport signed. The 32-year-old Huysegems played football the past two seasons with a club in New Zealand.

Stein Huysegems (32) wore the shirt in Belgium Lierse and Racing Genk. After several passages in the Netherlands, for instance in AZ, Feyenoord and Twente, the midfielder / striker moved to Australia.

The past two seasons he was there to work for Wellington Phoenix, a New Zealand club which plays in the Australian A-League. Huysegems scored there 15 times in 48 games, but his contract ran off. He was quite a while back in Belgium and maintained his condition at Lierse.

The 15-fold Red Devil signed a contract for two seasons at Dessel Sport. The second division is after 13 matchdays only 15th with only 10 points.

Good on Waffles. He was good for us in that second year and I will remember him fondly.

10 goals last year and wasn't on penalties from memory. Seemed like a good team man.

Yep. No hard feelings. In hindsight shame to let him go, but Ernie seems to have a plan.

Stein got injured in his second game back in Belgium for Dessel Sports on 22 November and was taken off after 24 minutes.

He hasn't appeared since (the four remaining games before the winter break).

He had scored in his first game for them on November 14 in the 2-2 home draw with Mons.

http://int.soccerway.com/players/stijn-huysegems/2...

Ernie must have had knowledge of his injury weaknesses and it would have been a factor in not offering him more than a one year deal.(Stein had struggled with injury for a few seasons before signing for the Nix and his old club Lierse wouldn't offer him a contract).

Once again, Ernie gets things just right.

Dessel's next game  = January 17

Stein will be playing in front of generally much smaller crowds than the A-League in the Belgian second Div:

http://www.european-football-statistics.co.uk/attn...

Crowds at the two games he played: 1,200 and 900

League average so far this season: 1,977

Best supported club: Royal Antwerp: average 7,030

Some clubs have been in the top league in the past and have stadiums that hold up to 16,000 but they don't pull those numbers in the second tier.

Belgium's a small country, much smaller population than the Netherlands or Australia.

Dessel Sports averaged 1,115 last season.

The lowest team averaged 487:

An injury-plagued season for Stein in the Belgian Second Div. with only eight appearances for him in Dessel's 30 matches so far.

Last appeared on February 28 and was taken off after 65 minutes. He got injured in his second game of the season on November 18 and came back on January 18, only to succumb to injury again on February 28. Scored four goals in his eight appearances though.

http://int.soccerway.com/players/stijn-huysegems/2...

Lucky for the Phoenix that they didn't re-sign him and end up with a foreign player who only made eight appearances. Signing Roly as a foreigner instead of Stein has worked out very well.

Stein already had a history of serious injury issues when he signed for the Phoenix and they were lucky to get two good seasons out of him when he was injury-free.
