The club has lost all it's identity. I will nominate the ownership change as the point where we squanded what was built prevous, and those in charge failed to communicate through words or deeds what they are about. The silence /non action has been more revealing to the aspirations of Welnix.

Maybe I'm a dreamer but I thought a new passionate, football interested owner would be found with departure of Serepisos. Perhaps these guys were opportunists,  thought they could use the club for whatever they fancied. It is puzzling to speculate what those objectives could be when you look at the past 5 years.

Mt Smart holds 30k for football games. Given the stand that everyone was in was at the ver best a little over half full 5k seems about right.

The 9ne thing the nix will not be doing at the moment is under reporting crouds

If the games are underwritten by councils and I say if, I doubt Hamilton and Auckland would be lining up for another go.

They only do so if there is an overall economic benefit to the city. Hard to see the benefits that a 5k crowd brings

If you are looking for an autopsy to say 'you are right' you won't find it here. I'm sure you'll tell me it's poor marketing and I'm going to tell you (as others have more than a few times) that NZ sports fans are band wagoners. Win, and you have fans. Lose and you are dog food. At the moment, the Phoenix are not a winning team/brand and when you look across their 10 years, the facts tell you we have finished at the ass end of the table more often than not. People do not identify the Phoenix with winning but when they do get a good season, as has been shown, they get crowds.

Personally I am disappointed with the number considering the catchment size (your argument) and 10k should have been easily achievable. Why did they not get it - poor marketing? It's more likely cause in the minds of casual fans, the Phoenix are tagged as losers. The words my wife's friend said when we said we were going was 'Phoenix? Don't they suck eggs?'

What worries me a bit is this has for me a slight feel of the Kingz/Knights in that as the team keeps continuing to not get results, fans keep dwindling until what do you have left?

It saddens me that I was right, it also saddens me that you were wrong!

Your comments above also go to show who has the "confirmation bias"

Any helpful suggestions on how things could be improved?

nah. I'll just do what you do and say that it's all wrong, with no suggestions, toss my toys and walk away. As for the confirmation bias, how are the Phoenix on the table, how are the results and press going, how are the crowds sizes in relation to that. Don't wait for google to tell you what you already know.

If you honestly believe that all this can be fixed with 'better/effective marketing' then that's all yours. I personally believe that nothing breeds success like success and if we win games, everything flows from there. I think I may not be alone in feeling that way as well.

One thing I will absolutely concede to you is that you would have gotten a bigger crowd in Wellington if that game was there last night.

Need more of this thinking..

"Maybe Slava Meyn has a solution. A Russian businessman who eventually wants to construct a boutique stadium near Christchurch airport in New Zealand to go with his academy, Meyn isn't interested in a quote from local builders. Instead he's gone to China, sourced the products he needs, and intends to have them certified to NZ standards before shipping them to Christchurch to be re-assembled. I had a look at his plans and his facilities last year, and he gets my vote."

Quoted from Cockerill's article below (about HAL expansion clubs and stadium costs)

I have suggested that a prolonged marketing plan to the Greater Wellington Region & following up on marketing campaigns could have benefits regarding increasing of the crowd sizes in Wellington. Your suggestion of Success breeds Success sounds like a fantastic plan, have you thought of telling Mr Dome about it?

All this reminds me of the fellow standing behind the Zone last night who kept yelling "Come on Phoenix, ATTACK!", repeatedly, with additional swear-words added as time went on. I wondered why that guy wasn't our coach. Such a simple and obvious plan which obviously had never occurred to Des/Greeny and the players. If we only ATTACKED, we would have won the game. Brilliant.

Back on topic - the Travelling Circus will continue to exist as long as the Nix lose money on EVERY game at the RoF, more so than on a 5702 attendance on Mt Smart. The real reason for the TravCirc is issues with the RoF. If a magician could mystically make the RoF and Mt Smart swap places, perhaps all our troubles would be over.

I'd miss Auckland Nix games but I'm not arrogant enough to think that I (or this city) deserve them if those attendance figures were, in fact, accurate. Maybe we'll redeem ourself at QBE in March.

Huawei requires an Auckland presence as well.

Huawei are backing a loser then if they think that these types of crowds are going to have a positive effect on their market strategy. Someone there been on the wacky backy?

Hatter is right, a much more concentrated effort on Wellington based fans might help. The club strategy on leaving it up to the fans to bring others along is just plain wrong. They really need to pull finger on this one.

And I for one will be really fudgeked off if as per normal over the xmas period when Wellington is abandoned, that the club then criticse the low attendences, expecially on January first. JV is right, if last night's game had been in Wellington with that weather we could have had a bumper crowd.

Just remember Phoenix BOD, at these circus games is a hard core of Wellington based fans whom make a concerted effort to travel around the country at their own expense so stop lamblasting us and spend more time on encouraging the casual fans to come along.

It should not be up to the fans to do your job for you. And lastly, stop taking us all for granted, that could come back to bite you in the Arsenal.

Games away from Wellington is not a deal breaker for me as a Season ticket holder and I understand why the owners want/have to do this...

In a 10 team A-league, variety quickly diminishes after a few rounds. But this is what we have, so something is better than nothing.

If I can see 10 games at home @ the ROF great, provided its not repeating the same team we played a few weeks ago.

I have traveled to Auckland, Christchurch, Napier, and the Hutt to see the Nix play in A-league games. And this year with 4 options (i think?) I said No, Nope, Not going to do it...Ok New Plymouth, but only because I haven't seen the Nix play there...

There is a novelty factor also for Nix fans from the Wellington area to go to these games. But I'm not going to travel to these games every year and you can't expect the hard core fans (which i'm not) to be travelling to games outside of Welly to provide that Yellow Fever experience as part of the game day atmosphere.

That one in Gippsland a few years back wasn't technically a home game was it? Don't think so, but there may have been some funny stuff along those lines (not to mention all our FFA cup 'home' games).

Nah, was a home game for the Heart in 'regional round' or some such thing. Fun day, shark result.

So it depends if you count Pre-Season games or not to how many different stadiums we have played at against A-league opposition.

All Grounds Phoenix have played at:

WestpacStadium - Wellington

AMI Stadium - Christchurch (previously Lancaster Park)

Ami Stadium - Christchurch (Yes we played at two different AMI stadiums, this one was previously Rugby League Park)

Baypark Stadium - Mt Maunganui

Eden Park - Auckland

FMG Stadium - Hamilton

FMG Stadium - Palmerston North (Arena Manawatu)

Forsyth Barr Stadium - Dunedin

Hutt Rec - Lower Hutt

McLean Park - Napier

Mt Smart Stadium - Auckland

QBE Stadium - Auckland

QEII Park - Christchurch

Queenstown Events Centre - Queenstown

Trafalgar Park - Nelson

Yarrow Stadium - New Plymouth (Up coming game)

Grounds that have been competition matches:

Westpac Stadium - Wellington

AMI Stadium - Christchurch (previously Lancaster Park)

AMI Stadium - Christchurch (previously Rugby League Park)

Eden Park - Auckland

FMG Stadium - Hamilton

FMG Stadium - Palmerston North (Arena Manawatu)

Forsyth Barr Stadium - Dunedin

Hutt Rec - Lower Hutt

McLean Park - Napier

Mt Smart Stadium - Auckland

QBE Stadium - Auckland

Edited to add these grounds are only games Nix have played against other A-league teams.

In that case New Plymouth will be their 11th stadium not their 12th.

I'm happy to take games around the country. I just don't see the point if the crowds are only 5 or 6,000. To take games to Christchurch, Auckland or Hamilton I would want at least 10,000 as a minimum.
