With two of the Brazilians gone and Ross touch and go about continuing playing that'd give us 3 spots to fill plus Elrich is no guarantee to stay (he's got Bling written all over him for next season).
Thoughts? Would you still cull O'dor/Brownlie based on
this?
Remember one of the braziillians spots was taken by
Rees. There is currently only one spot availlable (of 23) so
if Aloisi goes that gives 2.
Logic, through how little game time they've received (youth
excepted), suggests next to go would be Brownlie, maybe Johnson and
probably Paston freeing up a keepers spot I reckon.
Plus there's the unknown of Coveny.

He's barely played in their recent run, hasn't scored, and the Daily Telegraph ran a two page story on him 5 days ago etitled "the A-League Lemon". What Sydney are you talking about?
Quoting the Tele actually reduces your credibility.

Ignore the 700k, that's nothing to do with what we'd have to
pay...
Just to give you a feel for what Phillips might currently be
earning...
In 2006 (the last time a large-scale study was done) the
average striker's salary in the Championship was GDP 292,900. The
average salary for a 34 year old was GDP 195,700.
So assuming that he earns a little bit above average for his
position and age and factoring in a bit of inflation Phillips
is probably on around NZD 1,000,000 per season at the moment!
And that's before bonuses which the article estimates can add 60 -
100 percent of the basic wage.
I think you'll find that Phillips will be on a lot more money than that. More like 1m GBP plus bonuses.
The s**t are still on parachute payments.
You are probably right, especially as he in the second year of
a two-year deal (so signed in their first year down). Going forward
it's interesting to see what he could still expect to make even on
an average or below average deal in the Championship though.
I think a lot depends on how many goals he scores at the end of season. If he gets 19-25 he'll get a similar deal to what he's on from any of the big championship clubs/relegated premier teams. Maybe a 1 year offer from a newly (premier) promoted smaller club, say for instance Watford, Bristol City etc
I would say that the s**t will offer him a 1 year extension however their season ends.
His agent won't drop his wage demands because he's on a Bosman at the end of the season and might even look for more money for a final pay-off before retirement with a 10-15% sign on fee.

The value that they talk about in England, aren't they merely
refering to the transfer fee, let alone their wages? For example, I
think Rooney transferred to United for uo to 30 million quid (with
performance bonuses), however on top of this Rooney as one of the
top players would also pocket about 100 000 pounds a week in wages.
So in this case, 700 000 to get him here in this first place,
let alone paying his wages, coz apparently top footballers have a
problem feeding their families or something. Altho I may be
mistaken...
Oh Wellington is wonderful. We got the wind, the rain and the phoenix. Oh Wellington is wonderful.

players dont see the transfer fee. Some players receive
signing on bonuses, which are very rarely released. In this case,
it is likely old KP would be demanding a pretty substantial wage.
Maybe if our current marquee could be moved back to a normal wage
as per his performances, Philips might be a reality!

Rumours from across the ditch say there are 4 Aussie teams
interested in Smeltz................
Definates are Brisbane, Gold Coast (if they go in) and
Adelaide.
Hope we dont let him go - gods knows who we'd ave up front if
he goes!

Adelaide is a worry, isn't not being in Adelaide United kinda the
reason he's here? He did used to play for Adelaide City, and his
wife is from Adelaide too. Hmm.

He's a foreign player to the Aus sides and pretty universally
believed to be contracted here for next year.

Of course we will. What a stupid question!
Top goal scorer. Pure Breed Kiwi. Living in Wellington.
Working with the national side coach. And we have Terry.
Ricky might let him into the premiership if he got
offered a contract there but definitely not into another A league
side, for experience purposes in the hope that he would become a
better player

No chance. Poitnts below.
- He's on contract, no other A-League side has ever paid a transfer fee for another player and we're not going to let him go.
- We're looking at other strikers because George didn't work out, Brownlie hasn't convinced people and Covs is getting on.
- He came home from being unable to get a game for Halifax, a good season in the A-League isn't suddenly going to make him a target of 'big' sides in Europe.
- It would also pay to remember that there has been nothing concrete on any of these names, just a line in one Aus paper.
I'll take any money that Smeltz will be a Phoenix player in 08-09.

You are mistaken. We've been talking about his wages not a transfer fee. As someone else already pointed out he's off-contract at the end of this season so there wouldn't be a fee.
It's all academic anyway as it seems obvious that the Phoenix
couldn't (or shouldn't) try and compete with what would be even an
average deal in the Championship. And the way he's currently
playing someone in the UK will surely want to pick him up for
another 1 or 2 seasons.
