Surely this would have happened or is on the cards to happen. Rudan comes in clean slate not knowing anyone or their history. Why would he NOT talk to Declan. Similarly, Rudan is a fresh face so why would Declan NOT chat with Rudan?

To me, it would be more bizarre for it to not happen

Careful Vader, you're in dangerous territory: applying logic to a football situation. I reckon WeeNix academy 'parent expectations/marketing' is the issue.

I was wondering if possible future financial benefits were a factor. i.e. could the Phoenix unjustly claim a 'development' portion of any future transfer fees. I don't think so, but I'm not an expert

Someone mentioned this in another thread a couple of months ago. WP have already approached Ole to run their academy and it was flatly rejected due to the fundamental differences they have towards player development.

I don't think people understand just how far apart the two entities are when it comes to their juniors.

We've been lacking on mindless speculation recently and the hectic signings have stopped, so here is some more arbitrary guesswork. Few interesting defensive midfielders who are free agents at the moment.

Hedwiges Maduro https://www.transfermarkt.com/hedwiges-maduro/prof...

Marcel Titsch Rivero (Surely worth a contract on the name alone) https://www.transfermarkt.com/marcel-titsch-rivero...

This is actually a very interesting point, and I had no idea about these differences.

I would like to see a bit more explanation (let me know if is posted in a different thread if mods see it as off topic)

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

suggest you look at the ' Declan Edge - let them play' thread for starters.

Apparently an announcement at 4pm today according to the Instagram story? Is that right?

Doesn't specify 'player announcement' though

Yeah, doesn't really seem right, but that's what it says. Perhaps someone pushed the wrong button?

Normally you'd see the likes of Piney etc. talking about it; but nothing.

Re: Holthusen... if you're looking for a poacher, I think Holthusen is the man. Akron is one of the top college programs in the US. They have produced heaps of professional players, including DeAndre Yedlin who is now at Newcastle. Stuart was a leading player for Akron this past season and he was selected in the MLS Draft.

I know, I know... highlights videos make every player look like a superstar. But still, some very tidy finishing here:

Re: Collier, he is on a struggling Chicago team and is used more as a target striker/hold up man. I think he'll develop into a really handy player yet.

Rufer is useless very poor from Rudan. If his last name wasn't rufer his career would have been finished by now.

Disagree. Think he showed just as much promise as Ridenton, just wasn't given similar game time.

Bruce Djite is a free agent again, if we did want a striker that can hold up the ball. Not a great scoring record tho

As he's a kiwi you wish him all the best and hope he succeeds but after 5 years you know if he actually makes the starting eleven then you know you have a sharke team

Liked the look of both Jordan Murray and Troy Ruthven. Both areas we need sign in and standouts in their level - only Rudan can make a call as to whether they can make the step up or not.

Ruthven is in that blockier Tim Brown 185cm mould with an eye for a pass and a few goals from corners, it's been a while since we had someone with a bit of dominating presence in the middle. Good on the turn and seems to direct play. A Kopcynski partnership with all the small fast guys running off them seems like a balance combo.

Jordan Murray is super young and seems like he's destined for a bigger club, he's taking the Papiss at lower league level and surely will only improve with better players and service around him. Seem's worth a punt.

For those who missed the earlier links:

Troy Ruthven:

Jordan Murray:

A friend took me to a NPL Victoria game last night and saw Troy Ruthven play for Altona Magic. His highlights video doesn’t do him justice, the guy is a class player. Physically strong, quick for a tall athletic guy and didn’t spray a pass all night. Had a hand in all 4 goals in a 4-0 win and screened their backline very well as a DM. Would happily have him in a Phoenix shirt, if the rumours are true that Rudan is looking at him he would be great as a back up in the midfield. The connection would surely be through the Altona coach Goran Lozanovski, pretty sure him and Rudan played together in Europe so one would assume they’ve remained in contact.

Altona also had ex Phoenix player Ben Liftin and ex Sydney player Rob Stambolziev. Both pretty much spent the game linking up through Ruthven, healthy Macedonian crowd there too with a great kebapi ?

Feel like we’ve missed an opportunity to swoop on an NPL player here, Murray is a better that many of the recycled A-League players we see going round, sh*ts all over Skapetis.

Murray and Ruthven are two of the best NPL players in their respective positions, only a matter of time before Ruthven is given a shot like Murray has been. We would be mad not to atleast trial him, and would have said Murray if Central Coast hadn’t signed him but good luck to the boy.

May as well just have kept Kalu if we go for him tbh, well past it.

Agreed with the latter, before Rufer's injury I was starting to rate him a little more than Ridenton a couple of seasons back when they were both trying to break into the squad. Though in a small squad, you want as many A-League quality players as possible, I hope Rufer fits the bill and surprises us. This season seems to be do or die for both the club and Rufer, hopefully this sparks fire in bellies.

except Kalu was an import. I'd have Djite in the squad for sure, only 31, aerial threat from set pieces and crosses and can be used for dropping deep and winning knock downs for burns, Krishna and Williams to chase after. Would hopefully be a second choice/plan B striker, but I'd have him.

TAHW will probably be back once he's over his injury.  Expected to be up to 4 weeks from when he got injured so probably a week or so away.

When Ridenton played NZFC he was often the best player on the pitch. Last season when Rufer played NZFC he was often not the best midfielder in the Wee Nix side.

To be fair Sarpreet Singh was in most of those sides

Yeah and Ridenton is better than both Singh and Rufer. Just because Rufer isn't as good as the most exciting teenage player we've had in years doesn't mean he has nothing to offer to the Nix.

Hearing Rufer on the radio this morning gave me hope - he seems like he's come back keen to make his way into the starting 11. Done his time as a squaddie and now hungry to push on. Good on him!

I'll see your Rufer, and raise you McGarry. Don't think James played more than a handful of minutes after 3 years on pro contract, now looks like playing in the Eredivisie. Non selection can sometimes be a poor indicator of player  quality.

Bit off-topic but is he really? I find Singh far better than any homegrown player we've had in the past five years, Ridenton included. Pretty honoured to have him in the squad. Ridenton did his thing and was good enough to start, but wouldn't really say anything more

Based on performances last year and the fact he is now an import player in Australia, yes. Ridenton played almost every minute and was arguably our player of the season. Singh, while he played well, only broke into the side towards the end of the season. I think Singh will end up a far better footballer than Ridenton but last year Ridenton was the better player over the full season, albeit with reasonably different styles of play. Who knows if that still would be true had Kalezic given Singh a chance early on?

Can't compare Ridenton to Singh - their selection non selection was as much about hte lack of depth in respective positions... Singh had Finkler aead of him... Ridenton, Rufer?

I know which one made the bigger impact though.

And when Finkler left Kalezic felt he had to bring in Ljujic but never saw a need to displace Ridenton. Maybe that's an indictment on his coaching but it is clear that he saw one as more important to the squad than the other.

Ridenton had a good year last year - but I still don't think he is worth an import slot for Newcastle - hope I'm wrong, but doubt it.
