Based on All Whites games - Hudson Wihongi only - Gulley, Payne and Howieson all below par.

Getting the feeling that our imports are going to make or break this side next season already. Rudan seems ready to roll the dice and not just stick with the old, which if he gets the balance of the side and the culture right could well be a good thing.

My guess - and I might be wrong - is that Rudan will have more pulling power to get Australian NPL players in for The Nix rather than just straight imports. Not just because he knows them but also because they would be keen to be signed up by a coach that may be in charge of a new Australian club two years from now if expansion goes ahead. And it would help to silence the FOX brigade if more young Aussies, not just young Kiwis, are signed, as in "what does Nix contribute to the league?" thing.

One of the biggest problems with luring NPL players is money, most of the top players are earning more than the minimum wages that get offered. A one year deal on 60k isn't that attractive when you have a stable job in Aussie getting paid more than that.

Our imports have been an issue for a while, too many have been ok but no game changers other than Roy

Bonevacia?  Was very decent for us until WSW came snooping around/fell out with Ernie

Roly was / is/ a very good player who at some point appears to have reaiised that he was too good for our team.
However it took him quite a while longer to make a move to WSW.

He was a big loss to us in terms of absolute player quality, .but he also wasn't a good fit, in some ways. To get the best out of him we would probably have to build a team around him (or at least recruit other key players with him in mind) and I am not sure how that would pan out.

I loved Roly but he was very inconsistent

Rumoured to be leaving wanderers, I know it wouldn't be good for us but just the memory of some of those 30 meter screamers in enough to make me want him to come back

His best position competes with Singh. When he's ask to defend more he's looked worse and has lead to him to become unhappy at 2 different clubs.

Singh has more of those ahead of him than Roly.   I know whose growth I would prefer to foster.

At least, like Stein Huysgems, he thought he was too good for our team.

Roly is in a better position than Stein, who went from us to Belgian pub football; but if he's so great, why isn't he in a team which is worthy of his alleged talents?

oh there's no doubt who I'd rather have, Singh is destined for huge things and he's one of our best already. Was merely a point about my fondness for Roly, even when he became detrimental to the team towards the end there

I agree that when he arrived he was like a breath of fresh air. And the opposing teams were so aware of Roly's threat that they cut him down any time they could.

But to this day I do not know what his best position on the field was. I guess he was as much a #4 for us as Timmy Cahill is #4 for the Socceroos.

When do the all whites get back from India? Get a feeling we might see a signing once the boys are back in nz

He was here for 3 seasons, so assuming we started the paperwork it would have been 2 more years.

I haven't seen any of the games but judging by the views on here, the only player whom has caught the eye is Singh

I still like Hudson Wihongi and think he would step up with better players around him... Howieson has gone backwards IMO.

Been absolutely fantastic with Auckland City and would suit the A-League excellently, but don’t think he was used to the tempo that Kenya played and it showed. TAHW being more defensive didn’t show this as much, I think both would be amazing additions

Should we be looking hard at de Jong? Done well recently in the Aussie second tier, and had a good game overnight.

De Jong, Hudson-Wihongi are the picks for me.

Damn it's good to see Sarpreet boss a game. We've got a real find with this kid, we knew that already and it was against a pretty unimaginative Indian squad but he's playing more fearless each time I watch him.

I can see Tim Payne working in a settled squad at the bottom of a midfield diamond, he's not quite as eloquent and effortless as an Albert Riera type but there's a Tim Brown thing going on that makes me feel a certain way. I didn't see the other games with Hudson-Wihongi but seems to be a bit of hype for him on the thread.

Is there enough room for Howieson? With Sarpreet surely used as our starting central attacking mid? I feel Clayton Lewis is a more direct version of Howieson and potentially a more 'centre mid' but he did have some dominating passages of play in the game this morning.

It would be interesting to see Rudan's notebook after watching this game.

De Jong looked composed and offers a second striker role with a smart football brain, could be a great squad player that can develop in a pro environment?

I've always been a big fan of Payne. But I reckon he is a better box-to-box midfielder than a DM. So more Brown than Riera. And basically a straigth replacement for Ridenton.

Based on minutes, I think Scmidt sees Payne as a better player than Ridenton.

Big question is guna be what does Rudan think

Permalink Permalink

They haven't looked out of their depth at international level (albeit low international level), so why not give them a chance.

Permalink Permalink

how many should we look to sign?

Seems to be Payne is popular. Anyone else who could be a starter? Seemed like Singh and De Jong had a good understanding.

My first post here, I'm from Sydney, curious to see how Mark Rudan fares as an A league coach.

I imagine as well as checking out the local talent, he'll be looking at the  Aussie NPL's as a source of players.

Are Wellington well off for wide attacking options?, if not I'd suggest signing Danny Choi from Blacktown City, has tons of ability, been held back in the past couple of years due to Citizenship issues and injury but has enormous potential.

I think I read somewhere that not one of the Apia Leichhardt squad that did so well last season were approached by A League clubs, surely there must be at least one player there up to A League standard.

By the way I think there's a few more from Blacktown City as well who fit into that category.

Anyway all the best in the upcoming season, looks the most interesting for a while with especially all the coaching movements.
