Transfer Talk - 2018/19 Season

Great in theory, but doesn't necessarily work in a salary capped league.

Therein lies a big part of the problem as I see it - especially since the Handy is supposed to be an amateur league!

And if memory serves me right, the Nix only got to play in the HAL -  in a different federation - because there is (supposedly) no professional league in NZ. 

Which is still correct, its just the handy isn't amateur, its becoming more semi-professional.

No doubt there is a FIFA definition of professional league, semi professional etc. We were even paid to play back in the 70s in the lower reaches of the Central League. Leggy and others might remember and care to share the type of money they were paid through the ages. I remember I started off at 16 with $5 a win which was pretty good given our results and I was earning $18 a week working.

There are many here better qualified than I to talk but from what I know about our local league there is no current young player that the nIx would want and target locally whom would be earning anywhere remotely near 60k

If someone knows better then name the players whom have turned down the nIx with the exception perhaps of Ivan and Reirra.

Back to transfers - how are the NZ boys going?

Hypothetically, if you have a guy earning $55k in his day job amd pulling an extra $25k across winter and summer (and thats realistic), in some respects, you are better off where you are from the point of view that if it goes tits up after 1 year, you've moved to Wellington and out of a job...

Something about bird in hand, grass greener etc. I don't think anyone has the right to knock someone elses career choice until you have walked in their shoes. Riera could still be there making coin but he chose to walk away for his own choices that some do not understand.

Maybe some of the older guys might be earning that. Dont really see some of the younger ones who the Nix are likely to be targeting earning anything like 75k.Especially as many of them i suspect have have spent much of  their time on football rather than careers that earn some decent coin.

Dont have an issue with guys turning them down they are able to do what they want.Might help some of the wild speculating if the Phoenix were able to say xyz had been offered a trial/contract but they chose to stay where they are.Dont see why they dont do this.

Aim high though right? A good manager with an eye for talent can find another Rojas, Tratt, Singh, Krishna, Cacace or whoever kicking around in the lower leagues; good player going cheap.

No manager worth his salt will pick 'squaddies' and no player worth his salt will think of himself as a squaddie. 

That's loser talk; the kind of defeatist thinking that gets you second to bottom in the league.

That's very realistic and understandable - and I have no issue with that.  What has been suggested on here is different though.  The fact that an amateur can make more $ by playing summer and winter leagues than they can as a pro I have an issue with!

As for the fact that no player would pick himself as a squaddie, I also disagree - I think a ton of players would do that, especially if they aren't the next Rufer or Chris Wood and if there's only one pro team in the country who wants to take a punt on them.

Remember Ridenton, he didn't always play for us, he was essentially a squaddie for all but 1.5 seasons and now he's an import in the team that came second last year.  If you're not a top player you've got to take baby steps.

Don't want to derail the discussion away from transfer talk, but I believe this topic is important as, if proven true, it certainly impacts negatively on our ability to recruit talent locally!

Agree with you NZP but the reality is that semi professionals or part timers will have [and probably need] proper jobs to sustain themselves as the semi pro payment will not be enough. Additionally, there will be a number of young and talented players that make the sensible decision at a young age to start a career path outside football via working or study while still harbouring hopes of a professional football career. This is the recruiting environment that the Nix live in, not everyone is sitting around earing $15,000 a season hoping for the call.

I'm pretty sure many of the top Handy players would earn that much (and more) but would include coaching as part of the job.

Feel like this should migrate to a handy prem thread. I'm all for the discussion, but this is for spurious transfer rumour bollocks only 

TBF, If some of these guys are working professional jobs as well as playing part time , they might be taking a pay cut turning that down and potentially losing the chance to advance their off field careers if they never progress beyond 'squaddie' at the Nix. Then again, maybe none of them are in that camp and I'm just talking bollocks.

De Jong started for Hakoah in the NSW NPL last night, so did he just come over during the week? 

This article (https://www.a-league.com.au/news/pre-season-priority-area-your-hyundai-a-league-club-part-2) says we are starting pre-season on Monday 25th June, so maybe last week was just all the pre-season medical testing? Might explain why no pictures emerged of the players out training for us to look for new faces in.

I don't know how everyones been so patient! I'm absolutley dying to see a new signing! I hope someone gets announced soon, I don't know if I can get any more excited!

Obviously waiting until the World Cup is over so as not to disrupt their campaigns.

I think we are all suffering angst fatigue and the club recognising this has deliberately made no signings as to allows time to regather our voices for the next biatch and moan.

Imagine how excited you'll be when we make our next signing in August! ; )
