We need to focus on developing NZ players and it's insane that we only started doing it a couple of years ago.

Ricki had no time for local "amateurs". His suspicions were confirmed when Nix Ressies beat World Club Cup-bound Waitak 7-0 at Trusts Stadium. That game was an embarrassment.

Well you can't just expect amateurs to perform, it took Roy a couple of years of development to get to where he is now. That's why you need academies.

According to Sigmund Ricki also had no time to actually coach players so of course he didn't like amateurs.

We're never going to outspend the big teams, our only path to success is to exploit our own unique resources and that means developing local talent.

One of the assets that a new Phoenix coach would need is a history of developing players and working with raw talent. That's the one box that Kewell ticks, but fortunately plenty of other coaches also tick that box (including Des).

Problem is if they get to Marco or Kosta's level they just get 'poached' by the bigger clubs.  I think there's been a lot of academy development in the last 10 years in NZ, just not by the Nix.  The better players have bypassed the Nix and those like Rufer et al have been okish but not quite good enough to make an impact in the A league just yet. So I guess it's about developing enough young kiwi players and getting them up to A league standard that you aren't as impacted by the 'elite' young players not being with the Nix like the current situation.

Who are these better players you speak of? I can think of a couple but curious as to which ones you mean.

Not always necessarily a bad thing especially given our financial constraints. If we could become a feeder club, yes it would be frustrating, but it would also mean that we could then reinvest that in our first team squad quality or even our own academy. It would also make us a more attractive destination for other youth players if they could see the potential to develop here.

Weren't they both too old for Nix academy/WeeNix when it was set up though?

Can you make a case for any of those to coach the Nix?

Alan Pardew has some sort of connection with NZ - I think he has family that live here

Ranieri has shown he can perform miracles, OK the Nix probably couldn't afford him

you could make a case for most of those to coach the Nix - just got to have some ambition rather than setting the bar low

and the Phoenix seem to be the only club in the world who seem to think they can't appoint managers part way through the season

Didn't Leicester appoint the assistant manager for the rest of the season?

True but they did it when they only had 30% of their season left, and as was pointed out above they have relegation in their league so had to act to avoid it

When Ernie resigned the Phoenix had 70% of their season left, but it did feel as the season was written off from that point

What was the stat the other day....we would have been 4th if the season started when Des/Greenie took over. Seems like a decent effort and doesn't seem to be writing the season off. I reckon the rationale that it would take a new coach (esp one without pro experience) to get up to speed with the level is quite strong.

Remember City appointed their manager to the end of the season. Valkanis had the same scenario when he was Adelaide.

Wasn't it just a case of both of them being overlooked? Somebody else saw their potential first.

Yeah could have been picked up for youth spot

Actually IIRC I think the Nix were keen on Thomas (and perhaps Tuiloma) but I think Edge wanted/pushed Thomas to go to Europe instead. It was around the same time that Boyd came on board in the original academy.

Was that when Des\Greenie took over as caretaker's or when they took over permanently?

That stat is rather meaningless though - you may as well say if we won all our games from the start of the season we would have won the league!

I don't agree with the rationale that it would take a new coach to get up to speed is right, it really depends on the coach. I think the key thing has been the lack of support \ decisiveness  from the board. Buckingham and Greenacre were caretakers for 4 weeks and then given the job until the end of the season and told they were on an extended job interview, which hardly inspires confidence and suggests that the board has written off the season (or doesn't really understand football).

We need a coach that develops a working plan for the future, for this you need someone who has been in a similar situation and the experience. Des and Greenie tried to keep the season alive, but ultimately failed as well, not blaming them, stating the fact. I don't see those two attract players to come over here.

Pretty cool how Radio Sport shows no interest whatsoever in talking about the coching position. Imagine if it was rugby or the Warriors. The speculation would be wall to wall. Wellnix can get on with the job without the hassle of media circus.

What do you mean? They talk about whatever people calling in want to talk about.

In this case, it's a choice between a known entity, where there's little to discuss, or someone completely out of left field, which makes it hard to have much of a debate.

Things might have changed, but when I lived in Welly, hanging out on Vivian St would lead to some surprising offers.
