The article says that's what'll happen if Lia's fit. Is it wrong to hope he's not?

Not at all.
Another article in the same paper says

"The coach's preference is to revert to a 4-3-3 with the old firm of
Lia, Tim Brown and Manny Muscat in midfield, leaving a front three of
Rojas and Nick Ward on the flanks, and probably the in-form Dylan
Macallister in the middle."

GOD I HOPE LIA IS OKAY. PLEASE NO 451.

I heard it on Radio Sport as I drove to work this morning, almost crashed the car.

IF it's true, only reason I could think of is that he wants to play 4-5-1 and would play Hearfield wide for his pace, both going forward and defensively.

Not sure I think it's a great idea though.
WTF???? Please please let this be shenanigans by Ricki.

I don't think this is such a bad plan by Ricky to play Troy in the attacking wide role.
It seems Lia is not 100% fit to start so Ward shifting into the middle should do the job just fine.
Daniel would be next in line for the wide berth but let's be honest he's been ineffectual this season so pushing Troy forward into his more natural attacking role makes sense. My only question mark is his crossing ability, or lack of.
This then allows us to play our best defensive players (IMO) with North, Siggy and Dura all starting, along with TL as well of course.
Greenie and Ifill to provide impact off the bench.

Star striker Paul Ifill and midfielder Vince Lia, who are both returning from injury, will be on the Wellington Phoenix bench for tonights elimination final against Adelaide United at Hindmarsh Stadium.

Ifill was never a chance to make the starting line up, but coach Ricki Herbert was hoping Lia, who has been in fine form this season, would be fit enough to start.

Unfortunately Vinnie isnt quite there yet, so he will be on the bench, Herbert said.

We will be able to get a good 20 to 30 minutes out of him if needed.

In a surprise move Troy Hearfield, who has been at right back in recent weeks, will move further forward, with Jade North moving from centre back to right full back, a position he has filled for the Socceroos.

Captain Andrew Durante, returning from a two-match suspension, will partner Ben Sigmund in the centre of defence.

The team is: Danny Vukovic, Jade North, Ben Sigmund, Andrew Durante, Tony Lochhead, Manny Muscat, Nicky Ward, Tim Brown, Troy Hearfield, Dylan Macallister, Marco Rojas. Substitutes: Chris Greenacre, Vince Lia, Paul Ifill, Daniel, Reece Crowther (GK).

All this doom and gloom about 451

Chris and Dylan have started 4 games together since January for 2 wins and 2 losses and against Sydney and NQF we didn't play that well.

I can understand Rick's rationale if he wants to use Troy further forward as he hopefully will be better tracking the runs of Cassio.

I just hope that Brown plays better than he has in recent weeks, or if he plays like he has at least get on the scoresheet.

At least he's quicker, poorer delivery though. Dunno about this, seems a bit like get all your best players on the pitch. My biggest concern is North at RB. Seem to remember he struggled there a bit earlier in the season. I do prefer Ward in a central role rather than out wide though and I wanted the 4-3-2-1 rather than 4-4-2.

I'm lovign Ricki's efforts to keep them guessing.  Formation chop and change, different rumours, Troy in or out.

Maybe they see Troys pace as a better foil for Cassio (beep beep) than Daniel's guile.  Plus ge got way up Slorry last time so they might see this as a chance to get SLorry in trouble early.

I like it, and I'm not PATT's greatest fan.

Defensively, probably. Going forward, who knows!

Probably somebody who doesn't understand all the tactical nuances of the beautiful game like what we do!

On paper, he's moved from one of the 4 at the back to one of the 3 up front

Troy will do better job for the team than Daniel will regardless of the formation...in my mind I see it as 4-4-2 with Marco and Troy swapping over and working with Lochy and North to use pace down the flanks....article in Dom Post assumed Adelaides right back would mark Marco..which works well if he starts on the left but I think he does better work on the right.

4-4-3...pfffft

Good tactic of RIcki's.  Marco is so small that we can sneak an extra player on.

Making these sort of changes can be very risky. Some players have the nouse to play in many different positions. If it comes off then Ricki is a hero, if it does not, then he is an idiot.

Good tactics by Ricki, Daniel's best role is coming off the bench, Lia isn't fit enough to start so this line-up makes sense.

             Vuko
North    Siggy Dura   Lochy
        Mus"Flores"cat
     Ward           Brown
Hearfield              Rojas
            DMac

Bench: Greenie (15mins), Daniel (20mins), Lia (only with injuries), Ifill (15mins)

bearing in mind that Troy is/was a midfield option when he came to us, Ricki made him a makeshift RB which he has done ok at....

COYN!

And to add that this tactic is ...ahem... tactically neutral when comparing to Adelaide's favoured 4231 (though without Reid that may change). Basically both defences have a spare defender and the midfielders match their opposites exactly (1DM-1AM/2CM-2DM).

What did Greenie say?

And ... does any one have any idea of how many Phoenix fans will be at Hindmarsh tonight? Last time they were at Adelaide there seemed to be a goodly number, 30 or 40 or so.

Hm haven't seen Hearfield up front for ages! He has improved a lot and I guess he wants to show off to CCM all the ways he can play.
Funny that Riki should start him in that position instead of Greenie.
Could see it working, could also see it not.
