Loved Ricki's reaction after the first goal - was the same as mine

Jeez Mac was pretty lucky though - missed an open goal but luckily Petko gave him another chance

Anyone else find it strange how Harry has caught onto the Andy Harper-ism 'up like a salmon'? Said it after Siggy's goal against Adelaide toovaleo2011-01-06 00:31:22

Great nite great TEAM performance, only disappointment for me was that Ricki didnt go for the jugular after we went 2 up.

Thoroughly enjoyed Merrick chucking tantrums on the sideline, had ago at 4th official late in the first half then ran straight to ref at half time.Must have worked though as they seemed to get many of the 50/50 decisions early in the first part of the 2nd half.
He took off a defensive mid and bought on an attacking winger?
I genuinely have to ask what you mean by that,as I'm puzzled.
Pretty simple really 2nd goal was scored at 72 minutes, sub was made 10 minutes later at the 82nd minute.Given our goal difference and how ragged they looked at that stage im wasnt alone in thinking that it was the perfect time to bring on Greenacre.Bet he would have loved to have had some of that delivery into the box a little earlier in the season.

That's pretty harsh.. Though you did only present it as a minor gripe.

Differing opinions on something so minor - meh. Was just curious as to what you meant really. Curiousity satisfied

Allegedly

Would you describe them as satisfied with the performance?

Its a common phrase, everyone uses it. Ive heard Harry use it years ago when he was playing in the same seven a side team as me.
Its not an Andy Harperism, its an old and common phrase.

I guess Harper's added bit was the 'spawning salmon' and the over excitedness. Quick google has no reference to the saying.

Never heard it in commentary before that thoughvaleo2011-01-06 08:41:40

We'll take the credit for that- thanks not necessary , really
For Chrissie , my litle boy gave me a Phoenix away shirt " so we could be twins wearing our shirts to all the games. It could be your lucky shirt , eh Dad". Last night was its first team debut and look what happened! Sure , every one else will thank the players for such a great performance but my boy and I will always know the truth!
I thought every one had strong games last night , the plaudits rightly going to Marco , Ward and Lia (I NEVER thought I'd say that). But Manny was immense , covered a huge amount of ground ,made some crucial tackles and was incisive when he ran forward. He runs like a constipated chicken but utterly invaluable to this team.

A cautionary word re Marco- he's having a stellar season , no question and I'd love him to stay next year .But it will be his second season ; he won't be a surprise to the league and I hope he doesn't get the second season blues. This is NOT knocking him , I think he's a breath of fresh air.But the true test will be next year when other teams know what he brings and how he copes with the expectations that we put on hom and the pressure that  they'll put on him.

Still , WE WON and won well. Melbourne couldn't have complained at 6-0.I've got the day off , thankfully. I've got no voice and a massive headache.

Great result and we achieved it playing some great football. Marvellous.

.......MacAllister is quality.......

I think 'quality' is stretching it a bit. I'm more than happy to admit I said he was a donkey, he's been going well, and did a good job last night, but I'm still not overly convinced my first impressions of him were that far off the mark.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Agree, it could and probably should have  been 6-0.
Phoenix were immense.

But watching the replay, there was some woeful defending from MV.
Allsop added absolutely nothing when he came on.

Petkovich was the best I have ever seen him in this league tbh. I also thought Marco could have had a hattrick tonight, had heaps of chances in the box where he could have scored.

Botafogo - Rio de Janeiro and Wellington Phoenix, my two teams til death do us part.

People quickly forget that in the first half Petko stone cold dropped a ball from a corner and almost waved one through from a free kick

Marco is still young, and I think it showed. He did all the hard work getting the ball into the box, but very often didn't take the right option. That's something he'll have to learn as he matures and grows his footballing brain.

I used it a few times in commentaries many years before Harper, but he probably didn't kow that.

Well done to Lochy for a good comeback. It is no coincidence that the defence looked more comfortable and that Rojas enjoyed his time down the left for mom performance.

Vukevic has proved that we need to go looking for a keeperagain next year. Back to square one with Paston always injured (and not as good as his replacements, Reddy and Vuk) and our only back up will be Crowther

I see we only beat an understrength Victory side according to the Dom Post.  I would have thought that Kruse, Thompson and the second best Muscat would be more than balanced by Iffil, North and an injury carrying Bertos.  Thanks for the damning with faint praise guys.  And perhaps if Melbourne had kept players like Ward they might have some depth in their squad. had to laugh when the commentator said- first poor cross there from Marco. And it was about the same as we'd had from the rest all season, plus it beat the first defender!

They're both fine keepers. I think Paston shades it because he's got a better temperament - Vuko has the occasional brain-fart and goes screaming off his line for no good reason. But I am sorry to see him go off to warm the bench for Velaphi with the LOLry.

Great night of football...
The crowd was big and noisy and happy. You could sense the tension building up to the first goal...and then everyone went nuts.

Top games from two playersI have regularly bagged. Lia and Dmac were very good.

Why is it that this season is going like last season. We stutter along and then suddenly as the end approaches we decide its time to get out of negative mode and start attacking. We have some very good players but it has taken us 20 odd games to get out of a conservative mode and start being positive. We look so so good when we go out and attack.

Surely not he is by far the superior keeper to Valaphi. If Perth don't play him what a waste of a talented keeper. They signed him for 3 years they must plan to use him.phoenix_luver2011-01-06 12:29:12
