Ryan Nelsen is the All Whites standout and if he played for United he is a former player. Not sure I see your point.

The other truth is that Emo isn't that great and if he's Australia's standout they've got serious issues.

For me Nelsen is one of our greatest players. The fact that someone mentioned Emerton was their best player, was I'm sure in the last couple of games. He is playing well, but players have ups and downs.
I know that if he was an AW he would be 2nd pick behind RN. I'm sure that you think Oz football is no good, but you are wrong as there are many young players in sides overseas, just as there are heaps of Kiwis in Europe etc.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Yes.  Most of them the next MacAllister, Burns or North.  World power.

And how many of these young players are going to end up 25 and back in the A-League

Jedinak and Ognenovski have done well but they aren't youngsters. Burns and maybe Kilkenny are probably the only ones making a good fist of it

Oar, Sarota and Zullo could go either way but i'm sure Zullo will be back sooner than later

Leckie has the most potential

Really, Aussie football isn't in amazing shape at the moment. Their 'golden generation' are slowly fading away and the youngsters haven't totally stepped up yet.valeo2011-01-21 14:59:06

What happened to Karl Dodd? One minute he was with the fury, the next I havn't heard of him forever.

Reliable backup CB if needed? And could be reasonably cheap??

Ouch!
That explains it then. Well he might not have a team next year anyway?

I thought he ay have moved back down to state level

Nah, he wanted a team capable of winning and making playoffs.

In all seriousness though, i'd happily have him back as a back up.

Hopefully he wouldn't want too much money, but he did leave us looking for more game time, and with the league needing a lot of new CBs next season, I wonder if anyone would consider him?

I'd want him as backup. but then on the other hand, think we could probably find someone cheaper and younger as back up too?

On a side note, his signature would rule out Joel Griffiths from ever coming here

Ben Wright who has scored against Europa League side Chelsea, played League Two football last year and has had a fairly prolific goalscoring record has come to NZ and will play for Richmond Athletic in Nelson's first division and will coach in the region. Is only 30 years-old.

Someone left a comment saying he was wanted by Sydney FC, but never know if you can believe that or not.

Yes please.

Terry, show him some Marquee dollars.

Great to hear from Ricki

We offered Smeltz $s to stay in Wellington but apparently it wasn't about the $s - he moved to GCU so his family could go home and live on the Gold Coast - but then he accepted a move to China. He then did a runner back to the Gold Coast because his family couldn't live in China.

He then accepted a move to Turkey - which hasn't worked out.

I'm buggered if I can work out what motivates the guy - one day his family is the prime determinant the next day it's $s the day after it's his family.

If there was truth in his original reason for leaving Wellington why would he come back and how could his family settle or would he leave his family on the GC - which is a path to an unhappy player.

I would love to have a player of Smeltz's ability but I can't help but worry about his stability - I think we may well be better looking elsewhere.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I like him as a player, and as an All White, but I'm over him as well, as far as a possibility for our club. I  would always be wondering where and when he is off to next. No thanks Ricki.

I'd take him in a heartbeat.

If he signs, then he obviously wants to be here and its not like he doesn't know what hes getting into.

And as Ricki said, the fact that he is kiwi makes his signature worth more to the club. The only other guy who we could get the same benefits from would be Killen I'd say but hes still got another year on his contract I think

Didn't Smeltz say he got sick of having to go through customs each flight to australia and it was less of a hassle being based in Aust than it was In NZ. He won't come back is my guess.

Yep ,Judas or not, I'd like to see him back.
The thought of Rojas, Ifill and Smeltz carving  a new rectal oriface for any opposition would be prime viewing, imo... well, would beat Nip Tuck, ER,Grey's Anatomy and Shortland Street for my money!

BRING BACK SMELTZ!!

Pretty unlikely he'll come, but it would be good to have him back.

As for being 'sick of going through customs' - laughable reason to leave a club, jeezo.

He did give the club a lot of negatives after he left like said we were never gonna make it in the finals. Hope he comes though

Do think we should be targetting Killen for a contract next January and start approaching him now too.

Now, that's the kind of SPECULATION I like!
Like someone else pointed out, I'd take him in a heart beat.
However, I would - if possible - put something in his contract saying that he could NOT leave the club before, say at least one year, unless his new club paid us big big fat fat $$$$$$ so we could go to the market and sign another player of his caliber.
I'd hate for him to start for us and do well and the leave say 5-6 games before the play offs and we'd be screwed.

This being said, let's roll!

He'd really give us something we've needed all season.  I'd take him too.  Sure there'd be a worry of him leaving but write something into his contract giving us big money if he does go.  He'd be a great signing.  Hopefully his wife is so tired of moving she'll be happy with Wellington simply because she's so sick of it all and wants to settle down - wouldn't hold out hope though.

Can't see Smeltzy coming back.....if GC are in action next year he will stay where he loves the lifestyle. The only thing that would get him away would be a shiite load of money.....and I don't think the Nix have it.

I think I would rather have Killen as our marque player. When you see how well(sort of) Dmac has played then Killen would be 10x better in that role.

It was scarey how blunt our attack looked against Perth when Rojas, Dmac and Ward came off. None of these three are signed for next year.

I am afraid Daniel and Greenie are not the answer....too old and too slow. We need to re-sign Rojas and Ward and maybe Dmac as a squad backup and then sign a decent 10+ goal a season striker

Greenie scored today, doing well considering the scarcity of decent chances he was given from Daniel and Toto compared to the balls in from Ward and Rojas.  Good backup for next year and works his bloody sox off for the team up front.

Macallister had at least 2 chances today to put the ball in from close range and fell over his feet , Smeltz would have burried at least one of them and we miss that poacher in the box.

Killen is injury prone and would be a risk IMHO.

Get Smeltz in, re-sign Rojas quicksmart, get a first choice  right back in, empty Tonto and Daniel  and Diego and get in some better midfield/wide attack cover and we're sorted

Smeltzy had a very good reson behind his move away from us, he found it too stressful to explain what a doona was to Kiwis

this was affecting his game and his family

same in China and Turkey probably

Am in agreement with most of this...except maybe not sure that Smeltz is the answer and being honest dont think that Wellington would figure high on his list of clubs to play for....prove me wrong shane ( noticed the other night that the pundits kept calling him shmeltz?)

Killy should come home next January. Surely. Im quite Gutted that Nelsen has signed another year contract. Hopefully he will still come after that. Would be nice to have him for a season or two.

Drop toto and give all his wages to rojas on top of his own!!!

Before Rojas considers an overseas offer he should check out the fate of these Brisbane Roar players
Oar (19) played 26 A League games, similar type of player. Went to Utreght in Holland and made two appearances.
Michael Zullo (22) went to the same club after 54 A League Apperarances and hasnt had a run
Adam Sarota (22) also went to Utreght after 15 appearances and has had 5 runs.

Unfortunatley there doesnt seem to be any set equation on being in a professional environment compared to having game time.

Killen signed a 1.5 year deal in July 2010 with shenzhen. So that means no chance till end of 2011 i think. We don't pay transfer fees lol, just frees seemingly.

So my thread got nuked... copy pasta:

Rojas re-signed on a 2 year contract iis what I want to hear within the next couple of weeks - it is absolutely necessary to re-sign him for at the very least another year.

Other REALLY IMPORTANT squad members to retain (may already have contract, not 100% sure):

Ifill (he has an option right?)
Muscat
Durante

In my eyes:

Diego
Toto
Daniel
North (can do better for money)

should not be re-signed

Need to sign:

A good goalkeeper (NOT FLAPPY)
A good striker (Schmeltzy?)
A good RB/CB

Just thinking about Killen... someone said he is injury prone. Would it not be better for him playing in a league like the A-league where there aren't as many games a season? but also don't think he would be available till end of 2011... And who knows what Smeltzy will decide to do.

I think it is in Rojas's best interests to stay here for another season or so, If he's staying in this league I don't think any other team is going to develop him further than us and here he is close to his national coach.
I would like smeltz but can't really see him leaving GCU, they have him now and will surely offer him stacks to stay.
