I don't understand the whole Diego business. After such an injury ravaged season, how did he never get a look in?Luis Garcia2011-02-21 17:57:08

I'm just happy to hear the right things from Ricki. He is not content with our current strikeforce,
and more importantly,
He has identified a fullback who he is looking to sign.

This is gonna be a LONG offseason, so any signings need to be very considered. It also means we can get guys in early enough to gel and fit together BEFORE the season starts unlike this past season.

Lovemore for Pav and a new top striker (Smeltzy!) to accompany D-Mac or Greeny.

And if Diego's replacement is only going to end up as a squad player it might as well be Clapham, but first priority should be starting players, namely a new right back.

Agree. Let's bring in local talent wherever possible and if the skills are comparable to what's on offer overseas.

And probably the wrong thread, but ... what chance of a team in the official youth squad next season? I think we need that as much as we need a decent striker.

Was a decent player when he wasn't injured..but was injured all the time

And i'm just waiting for us to sign Sekulovski - is a complete donkey but fits the bill. Is Tarek Elrich off contract? He's been sh*t this year but could do well with us.valeo2011-02-21 21:07:48

My apology if this has been covered in the previous 50 odd pages, but could someone please explain how the salary cap works?

Is there a finite $ amount that can be paid to the whole squad, or is there a maximum $ amount that can be paid to any one invididual???

Or how does it work?

$2.1million NZD (or so) over the whole squad with a marquee player whose wages are entirely exempt from the salary cap and a youth marquee who has to be Australian (or in the Nix's case, Kiwi or Aussie hopefully) who has up to $150 000 AUD exempt from the salary cap.  Also, injury replacements are exempt I think.

Not a fan of his new haircut but would be a decent signing.

There's also the Australian marquee.

If Sydney can sign him, I'd like to see us sign David Williams on a two year deal.

So if you spoke to a Millwall fan who thought Iffy was sh*te (as some do) you wouldn't have signed him either?... with that logic you wouldn't sign anyone (especially from Liverpool or Chelski).

Gone or will probably go are North, Hearfield, Vukovic, Diego, Toto, Crowther.

Not re-signed yet Rojas, Ward, Dmac, Musa, Daniel

A right back from outside the A-League will be signed up in the next few weeks....any rumours?
Rickie wants a "gun" striker.....which is bleeding obvious. Trouble is so does everyother football team on the planet.

Article says the A-League season will probably start late Sept or early Oct to avoid clash with the egg ball playoffs. This is the first I have heard of this. Does this mean the season will run later into March April or will they try and squeeze in more midweek games....I sure hope not.

Does this mean it will start later every year?

Would prefer a later end too if this was the case - but that would come up against not-really-super 15 games so a clash there as well.

However late summer football is much nicer as a spectator than freeze-your-t!ts-off late winter/early spring.  Especially @ 80 mins.

Someone please think of the children!

Wrong thread I know but...

Could this help us as well with the RWC/RoF clash? Last RWC game at RoF Oct 9. Means we might just have to play a few away games at the start of the season and we'd be sweet.

Why? We had Vukovic, and did you see how he was shaping for a bicycle kick on that last corner against the Cakes!??!

Oh yeah, if that defender hadn't got up to it, it would have been Eugene Dadi all over again.

Had.  Past tense.  We need to replace Danny Vukovic.  (Aranzubia even has the right number of syllables.)

Manchester United have had a long association with Royal Club Antwerp and send players on loan there, less so in recent seasons. A big factor is Belgium's less strict foreign player/work permit laws which allowed Dong Fhangzou to play and get a EU passport after 3 seasons at Royal Antwerp. Probably works more in Man Utd's favour than Antwerps. Not sure there is much benefit to us, maybe training/medical/preparation idea sharing and maybe a game against each other.

I suspect valeo means on Aus history.  This (if it happens) would be the latest in a long list of tie-ups and the net results are pretty much non-existant.

Troy Hearfield has taken up a contract at Central Coast Mariners for two seasons while Danny Vukovic is heading to Perth Glory for three seasons. Nick Ward decided not to renew his contract as he prefers a move back to Australia and is wanted by Perth Glory and Melbourne Heart. Diego Walsh's contract was not renewed and he will pursue options in the United States. Toto Cornejo was not offered a new contract and was released back to South America. Daniel's contract was not renewed and he will explore options in the ASB Premiership as he looks to become eligible for the New Zealand national team. Jade North was granted an early release to explore options in Japan and Holland. Reece Crowther was not offered a new contract and is being targeted by League 2 and Conference sides in England as well as clubs in the United States. Marco Rojas rejected Wellington Phoenix's offer of youth marquee instead preferring to make a move overseas with clubs in Belgium, France and Holland all having shown interest, should an overseas move fall through, he is likely to join one of Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC as he believes there are further opportunities to develop his career. Dylan MacAllister was not offered a new contract with club looking to explore other options in the attacking third, MacAllister has been attracting the interest of Melbourne Heart, Gold Coast United and Sydney FC.

From the Phoenix wiki page

How much truth is here in regards to Ward and Rojas??

Terrifyingly. It would suggest that no good players want to stay with the Nix. It suggests that all those stories about how Terry's money worries are causing the Nix to stink in the eyes of any decent footballers are true. The inability to attract, or keep, decent players will kill our club more surely than any IRD lawsuit. Doloras2011-02-23 12:03:54
