Was - Phoenix Transfer Speculation (Part 1)

1. I am perfectly calm at the moment and I don't particularly give a toss about the credibility of the Wiki editor

2. I certainly don't agree that losing Rojas and Ward will mean we automatically finish bottom of the heap next season

3. For all we know, it may always have been Marco's intention to bugger off, irrespective of what the Phoenix had offered him. Those reasons may well have absolutely nothing at all to do with the financial position of the Phoenix or whatever else is on offer here

4. I would assume that the club are actively targeting new players, to replace the players we are releasing from their contracts, if nothing else.

5. Since their inception, until the sh*t hit the fan this year, the Phoenix have been continually paraded as the poster boys for being a well run club. Despite that, we don't exactly have a shining reputation for signing "star" players. This would suggest to me that there are other considerations, outwith the Club itself, which make coming to Wellington a less attractive option than some other clubs.  Just means we have to work harder on recruitment.

If people want to start hitting the Prozac, that's fine with me. As I am blessed with good old Scottish pragmatism, I think I'll wait and see what develops before I start to tie the noose round my neck.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Thanks for those sensible comments, Jag.

Now you mention it, the Nix have a reputation for signing other people's garbage and they end up shining. Smeltz and Iffy are the classic examples of this, and Nick Ward has also done much better than with the Tards.

But I don't remember - was it also the case last season that we couldn't hold on to any players who were off contract and we actually wanted? If it was the case, then I certainly am overreacting and should start back on the Flinstones Chewable Morphine, but I didn't think it was. The only one I can remember losing was McKain (how did he end up doing in Saudi, anyway?)

And I really HOPE that the club are actively targeting good new players. Ricki signed Toto last year, so you'll forgive me if I remain nervous.Doloras2011-02-23 13:39:02

Since when has this been a strength of the Phoenix?

At the end of season 2 we lost our best player, yet the following season kind of worked out for us.

That's because we signed Iffy. This year we signed Toto. My confidence in our ability to pick 'em has been shaken.

Still, maybe it opens up squad places for Lovemore and Clapham.

Doloras really has made an outstanding effort today to get quoted in the next anti Terry story.

I can't remember who was off contract last year. I'm sure somebody will know!
As I said earlier, I actually see a lot of similarities between us and the Warriors. They had, and still have, real problems attracting 'top tier' players and for most of the time had to content themselves with picking up players that nobody else wanted, or were getting close to the end of their careers. They also wasted cash signing a few lemons too!

I don't think the current uncertainty is helping, but I do think the thought of physically moving to New Zealand isn't attractive to a lot of Aussie players (and maybe even players from further afield). I don't think it's as cut and dried as them worrying about our money situation.

I also hope the Club are targetting decent players. Hopefully once the financials are sorted, that will be one less obstacle to recruiting the right people

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

That's because we lucked into Ifill. Last year we bombed with Toto. This year, who knows? It's way too early to predict doom and gloom.

Btw, if you expect Lovemore and Clapham to be saviours of the Nix, think you're somewhat mistaken.

Of course, we could just sign up the entire Auckland City squad. They'd do a job for us.

I have heard that, when a woman goes through menopause, the drop in estrogen levels sometimes has her acting as crazy, irrational and aggressive as a man does all the time.

Yeah, but some of it was true, like the stuff about North and Diego.

It would be nice to hear who did edit the Nix's wikipage with unsourced rumour saying that Ward and Rojas were both gone.

Er, yes we can. We know it was edited by someone with a history of accurate edits to the Nix wikipage, coming in from TelstraClear in Wellington, this morning at 11:48am... nine minutes after dunnix brought it to our attention. Hmmm. It's possible that this forum and Wikipedia have a clock difference... but still, hmmm.

Right, back to speculation, Perths Smeltz deal could be called off because FFA are contemplating reducing the marquee back to 1 spot. Meaning if Sterjovski sees out his final deal, Smeltz will not be going there.
