So is tribal football and a journalist saying there's a chance all we're going by or has Ricki said something more (and no, I didn't bother reading the articles).

What about Clapham?
The thing to do would be to sign both and let grasshopper learn from the master

Does anyone have a summary of who in our squad is signed for how long ?

I'm interested in whose contracts expire this year i.e. who we need to decide will or won't be re-signed.

Cheers.

For ease of reference;

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF THIS SEASON:

Mark Paston (gk)

Tony Lochhead

Diego Walsh (Fgn)

Tim Brown

Chris Greenacre (Fgn)

Daniel Cortes

Troy Hearfield

Ben Sigmund

Reece Crowther (gk)

Marco Rojas

Dylan Macallister

Oscar Roberto Cornejo (Fgn)

Mirjan Pavlovic

Nicky Ward

Jade North
Danny Vukovic

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON 2011/12:
Manny Muscat
Paul Ifill (Fgn)
Vince Lia
James Musa (u21)

CONTRACT EXPIRES END OF SEASON 2012/13:
Leo Bertos
Andrew Durante (c)

Looking at the players whose contracts expire this season, based of this seasons form, I would really want to hang on to; Paston, Greeny & Vuko (and youth (Marco).

I'm not suggesting we get rid of the rest but there are at least 6 I'd personally be relaxed about moving on.

Pav also won't be a youth player anymore I think?

Also North and Vuko on 1yr but can't expect them to hang around lol

You don't want to hang on to a socceroo defender? Surely in an Australian league, that suggests you cant do much better than him.

Pav has shown enough to earn a new contract if we have space in the squad for him (since he will no longer be a youth player).

Hearfield is quite a useful utility, played well last season, and is getting better this season.

Allegedly

For me, we should be releasing Cornejo, Diego, maybe Daniel and maybe one of the keepers. simon_hampton2010-10-23 16:52:23

I was more thinking hed (north+vuko too) be off to a better team or overseas, rather than us not offer a new contract. Im sure we''ll try, either way we'll need to resign or replace him is what I meant.

Id love for north to resign and pav too who I think has a huge future should he actually back himself and shoot more. just means he'll take up a normal roster spot, at the expense of someone else on that list. I like hearfield since he actually has pace which we lack - But is a little bit of a liability with his defending and some of his crosses atm.

I would have also though we'd try for at least 2 nz GK's considering we 1 will never play and will prob just be covered if needed by an injury replacement contract. For the sake of developing someone - nothing against Crowther either (I've just started following the team properly recently) Though obviously not moss because that's a waste on the bench.

And I'd rather see clapham on the bench rather than some of the visa spots we have atm (well one maybe two of them)

But alas, tis up to Ricky and the crew.

I'd ditch Diego, Crowther, D-Mac, Toto, and potentially Ward and Hearfield provided we could get better cover.

+1 when he came on he had a shot heading for the top corner and generally made things happen.

Also Daniel had a good strike just going wide.

I agree with Ward comment.

I'm over Daniel - promised much and delivered little. Looked good in season one (helped by Felipe) but has never shown much since. Six goals in 60 games - 4 of which were in season one. Two goals in the last 43 games. We need players who are contributing a lot more than the odd good strike or cross.

But in saying that, Daniel would make a much better squad player than the likes of Diego. He's an attacking player, who loves living here, granted he wasn't on top dollar I'd be keen to keep him in the mix. Ward has to stay, he's been great. Vukovic and North will leave though thats for sure.

Excluding youth players and keepers our squad's age profile is;
Hearfield 22
Manny 25
Ward 25
Lia 25
Toto 27
Lochhead 28
Bertos 28
North 28
Durante 28
Mac 28
Sigmund 29
Brown 29
Diego 30
Daniel 30
Ifill 31
Greeny 32

Average age 28.
Average age of Roar; 25
Average age of Adelaide; 26

I think we have too many players, who don't have natural speed to start with, getting towards the end of their careers. I know you can play well into your 30s if you look after yourself (Elliottt, (and hopefully Ifill) is a case in point) but they are better players i.e. being better than most enables you to lengthen your career. That doesn't apply to most of our squad.

I think we need to look hard at the players knocking 30 with a view to getting some fresher, younger (and more talented) legs in to the squad.

Just putting it out there.

I suspect that he's had injury problems.  Whether to keep him around or not is probably a medical question.

As far as the stats go, though, Daniel played 1269 minutes last season, contributing 2 goals and 4 assists in that time.  (For reference: in 2205 minutes during the same season, Leo Bertos managed 2 goals and 8 assists.)  That doesn't make him a first team player, but it's fine for a back-up.

Ward is slow. Ifill is slow. Greenacre is slow. That's three of our most attacking players. We need speed, bring back Kosta!

Of those last 43 games, how many was he on for longer than the last 5-10 minutes of the match?

As much as it hurt to watch I don't think you could fail to be impressed by the way Adelaide carved us up with speed and skill in the second half the other night.

Watched the Roar vs Victory the other night with envy - I would love the Nix to play with the speed and flair that both teams - but especially the Roar showed.

Imagine the crowds at the RoF if we could play like that !

I can't see a 32 year old Daniel (which is what he will be in the middle of next season) footing it with some of the young, fast, skillful talent on display this season.

I know he could be a "squad player" but why not reinvigorate the team with youth and talent and whoever can't force their way in to the starting 11 becomes that weeks squad player rather than use it as a fall back for players who will never be a first choice starter ?

I would love Daniel to pick up a youth development role with NZFA - he is amazing with kids but, for me, he is not the future for a team with title aspirations.

Totally agree on the Roar....I really admire the way they are playing. lots of quick player movement, lots of short passing.....pass and move, pass and move. Instead the Nix pass and watch!
Totally agree on wishing the Nix played like that.
We have a side which was succesful last year playing muscle football. We physically bossed the midfield with two bruisers in Lia and Brown. We then relied on the flair of Ifill to provide the attack supported by Greenie and Dadi.
I doubt we have the players with the skill to play a Roar type of game. It would require a major cleanout of players....which is not going to happen. In reality Rickie will keep on going for a few more years.....his era will end at the same time as his senior players like Ifill, Greenie Daniel etc retire.

My analysis of current squad

Keep:
Mark Paston (gk)
Tony Lochhead
Chris Greenacre (Fgn)
Ben Sigmund
Marco Rojas
Mirjan Pavlovic
Nicky Ward

50/50 (depends on $ and possibility of getting better players in their position):
Troy Hearfield
Tim Brown
Daniel Cortes

Gone:
Reece Crowther (gk)
Dylan Macallister
Oscar Roberto Cornejo (Fgn)
Jade North
Danny Vukovic
Diego Walsh(Fgn)

Would like:
Left and right fullbacks - would allow Muscat to play in midfield, give depth with injuries and push/replace incumbents.
Midfielder - Deep lying midfielder better than Brown and Lia that can play alongside Manny and behind Ward/Greenacre in 4231/4411 respectively.
Striker: A striker with pace and intelligent movement.
