Interesting that he might be offered a new deal in the CSL. Some comment that he didn't fit with the Guoan coach Jamie Pacheco's style of play (and Pacheco has signed on for another year).

I do like this new 'coalface' football term to BTW
I think credit goes to Bluemagic or one of the Auckland trolls who stated that as they were supporting Auckland City they were at the 'Coalface' of New Zealand football unlike us in our Australian ivory towers.
We liked it so kept it on.

Despite him being a c*ck he would be a good signing. We were in the hunt for him a couple of years ago weren't we?

He was linked with a guest stint here last year but either his demands were too much or there were insurance issues with his Chinese club.

Was thinking the same as HN. He obviously considered us at some point. IIRC he was wanting to get in the eye of the socceroos coach to try make it into the Asian cup squad.
Would think Newcastle would be his preferred option though, and they are also in need of a new striker. But could be a great signing for us

Well one of the Justified Ancients of Welnix does look like the Dolmio guy so maybe there is something to this rumour...

I think there is a good chance we will get Killen sooner rather than later. Shenzhen Ruby look destined for relegation unless they turn something around and I can't see him sticking around for Division 2 Chinese football. Maybe at the end of the CSL season. Here's hoping.

In my memory, this was to be the season he returned, although that was probably more likely to be Jan/Feb for the end of the season.

Things look to be conspiring for this move.
I do wonder if Killen would make the impact people suggest

It wasn't that long ago that he came here with Celtic and scored two goals in a pre-season game against the Roar (??). I think he'd do well in this league. That judgement obviously isn't on that one game he had here but I think he has the attributes to do well.

I know its not a good comparison, in a number of internationals I thought he dissapaired and didn't go looking for the ball. I can't remember specific games, just thinking it was hard on the midfield trying to move the ball about....

Talking about that, where can I get a copy? I have the World Cup DVD but want the playoffs....

This is what I remember.
I think we didnt play him to his potential in the 343 as he was more wider than he would have been useful. Quality of a team player, playing out of position.
He would be a decent option for us, especially if we were to snag another euro based striker

+1
I have been generally been impressed with Killen when playing for the All Whites. He works hard, is versatile and can drop deep or play with his back to the goal, if a defender jumps in he can beat him, good first touch. Decent all round just lacks a bit of pace.

Although he's not slow.
I think he would thrive in our side, but would need another striker with him to get the best out of him

The best part of that is...
A new spring in their step. The Wellington Phoenix have spent the last six days training with the knowledge their club is safe in the hands of a new consortium of owners. Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert says he's already seen a boost in spirits in the time since the ownership change. Herbert says the players are out and about and they're very buoyant.
It doesn't actually say we have any new signings yet. We know they are going to be coming soon, it all depends on how good they are, and two of them will be youth signings. But the morale aspect is important.

Three new players by Tuesday!!! This is very exciting!
I was just wondering to myself earlier if they are keeping the number ten shirt free for Mr. Killen?

Good grief. Another vague promise that players will be signed in the future. These are becoming a bit empty aren't they?
And I have a sinking feeling that, even if true, this will simply relate to youth spot and bench players - when what we actually need are players who are going to be able to walk into the first team.
Anyway. Forgive me for being so negative in my first post. Just call it a case of the Friday afternoon blues.

The promises kind of have to be true by next week though, and with new owners it is now possible financially.
I'd almost be disappointed if we rushed a big signing. I'd rather wait a few weeks and really look for someone we want.
Expect no more than youth signings.

Yeah. Sorry about that. I did ask for forgiveness. And I don't want us to rush into a signing either. But we have had an unbelievably long off-season, and surely Ricki has had plenty of time to work out what the squad needs and who is available to fill the gaps. If he hasn't had the money available in the past, he should still be able to act quickly and appropriately now he has some.
Anyway. To counter my negativity about this press release, I am genuinely pleased that we signed Sanchez. I think he has shown real dedication to win a contract, and I am really hopeful that he will offer the team an extra dimension on the field.

So we can put you in the glass half-empty camp then?
(I have plenty of rose-tinted glasses if you want one)

They've got offers out to three former European players, just needs one (or two) of them to sign on the dotted lines. Could be great news.

True dat. But the reason I am not confident they are the ones being referred to is because those contracts have been dangling for a while. I still hope we might get some decent signatures, but I can't see the club being so confident as to predict them being penned by Tuesday. The latest news sounds more to me like they have just offered three contracts to people who they are pretty sure will sign on the dotted line without so much as a second thought.

Although. Now I think about it. I am making some pretty big assumptions based on guesswork and not much else. Perhaps I should just go to the pub and stop posting until I am feeling in a chippier mood.

I'm guessing i'm missing something here but don't we already have 4 import slots taken up? One by the all important reserve goalkeeper - So the max we could sign would be 1 anyway?
One well credentialed attacking player (thinking Ifill - seasoned pro, maybe had a few injury issues in the past but will do well with less workload etc) and I'd certainly feel better if not confident about the coming season though.

Exactly. Binkley's only joined today and he's already shown more self-awareness than most of us.
