I agree - it will be a little bit silly when we start the season with no new strikers when clearly, throughout the whole offseason, the one single signing that we desperately needed above all else without fail was a recognized experienced goalscorer.
The fact we have signed everything but is getting quite unnerving. When we signed Pantelis and Downey; everyone was complaining that we hadnt signed a striker. That was a harsh call, but mot of the more cool headed forumers did say we had months to go to sign one.
When it got to last month, people were getting nervy, but we had lots of signs we were in for a top striker, especially when we turned down Mehemet for something better. Up until Terry left, we still had news about strikers, in fact we heard the club had 3 players lined up to sign that week.
+1 It seems really weird to me that getting a striker has been our priority, that we have had so long to find one, that we have rejected some reasonable options along the way (we could have re-signed D-Mac, or picked up Mehmet) - and that we are about to start the season with only one fit striker, a crocked back-up and a trialist who prefers to play deep.
Striker really seems the most specialised of positions to me (goalkeep apart). I was a rubbish footballer, but had more skills and pace than most of the people I played with and against - and I was still a complete numpty whenever I tried to play in that role. I just didn't have the instinct. I can't see someone like Ward being any better.
It is really disappointing for me if we go into the season without someone decent alongside Greenacre. And I imagine it will be demoralising for the players too - it is hard not to feel outgunned when you go into a match with a make-weight in a key role.
Still. It is hard for me to have much perspective on this issue. Right now all I can think about is the first game. And from a business perspective I realise that the club and the new management probably need to focus a little beyond that.
