Auckland will rise once more
Reid is a classy little player and if he is available we should snap him up asap. If we could get Reid as an injury replacement, coupled with Vargas and allsop on one year deals I would be happy with our overall recruitment

We're not going to get Vargas.

Not unless Ricki kidnaps his kids and brings him over at gunpoint..... or offers a sh*tload of money to him and Melbin.

DOn't want vargas and Danny can GGF if he hates us that much. Let him play VPL.

That was the third part of the equation too!

Also think those kiwis playing in Aus would be ideal injury replacements, no stand down period for them I understand?

Only ideal if they're good enough.
They had solid VPL and NSWPL seasons, didn't tear up there and the leagues are well below the A-League.

James would be interesting.
If he is finally getting over his knee injuries surely he's young enough to be given another crack.
Looked good when he played for the all whites and although not a great club did ok at Tampere (goals / games ratio) albeit without been particularly liked by his manager if i recall correctly.
Would like to think he could atleast be asked over to train / trial for a few weeks by Ricki - if he has lost that spark, no harm no foul. If its still there, then he could prove to be a real asset in the future.

hence why it would be an ideal situation - of course if they look worth a shot and good enough

Or Kayne Vincent. Was in the VPL for a few games and scored plenty, and is now back in India but wants to go to a 'bigger' league.

Its a bit worrying that Allsopp doesn't appear to be wanting to come here. Looking around the A-League, the only other strikers I think could be available would be McBreen and maybe Sterjovski. We need a striker, but I wouldn't be too keen on either of them.

Agree
Would rather Greenacre run his nuts off than take either of them, sadly most decent strikers already have contracts.
What happened to Tim Payne's trial at Blackburn???
He looked like someone we could start off giving 15-20 mins a game to and see how he goes against defenders with tired legs.

Whats the story with playing in India??
Surely staying in this part of the world provides him with more options to move than the land of Cricket.......

This.
I honestly don't see any kiwi from out side of the AWs last few squads (world cup to now) getting signed by us. We've got the youth spots filled, and unless it was someone like Killen or Nelsen they prob aren't up to it. Thats not me being a prick or selling the kiwi boys short thats me being a realist. Elliot, Christie & Mully have all been and gone and most of the others are already tied up in more desirable leagues.
The NZers in the aussie state leagues havent exactly dominated according to the informed sources here, so why would RH sign a Kiwi over an Aussie who is better?

Kayne Vincent - this has to be a pisstake surely. Didn't do much at NZFC level, hasn't played in any age group teams? India? He may as well play in Botswanna for all its worth if the criteria is 'he plays overseas so he must be good' I'm expecting some numpty to throw out Jason Hayne at some point and make it totally farsical

Is that a definite? To me he was a very talented footballer and I was aware he left a couple of camps about 3-4 years ago. It would be a shame if he was gone but I suppose we have enough talented stocks coming through to really not have to worry about him at AW level.
What ever happened to Adrian Webster (not that I am advocating signing him)

I agree with most of this but some of the Aussies he has signed from the state leagues including this years crop probably arn't much better then the likes of James.
I've always been curious as to why Ricki never tried to sign Caravella or Tambouras back in '07. Caravella especially would have been a great signing and if he was still here now would qualify for AW duty.

No. But Griffiths and Tsatallios are U20 and James isn't.
Wasn't Caravella in Holland before the Phoenix existed?

We should be developing kiwis because believe it or not, we are actually in New Zealand and there are kiwis in the ASB Premiership and in the U20 and U17 New Zealand teams that can step up here if given an opportunity to be developed and gradually exposed to A league level.
The new owners are thinking along similar lines if various quotes in the paper come to fruition. (Think reserve and youth teams).

^ discussed in oh so many places - we are first a furmopst a wellington based franchise team, targetted with winning the a-league, we are NOT an all whites or NZ football development team. Sure if the youth talent is there and good enough pick them, but until we have proper youth team in the a-lague I do not want to see a 17yr old kiwi picked ahead of a guy like Ward (for example)

Has anyone heard any rumours regarding Reid? Or does Ward being unsuspended fix our DM/RB problems for Ricki?
Also one of the early new owner transition articles on stuff mentioned that they (new owners) were considering an offer from Westpac stadium to move their training ground there... Does anyone know any more on that front. Better training facilities have been cited by departing players in the past, Rojas mentioned it, Kosta too I think.

I think they were talking the Phoenix offices being moved to the Stadium. Very much doubt they would be able to train there full time.

I would expect that now the Phoenix are chums with the Wellington City Council then they will help us out by upgrading Newtown Park to a state of the art training facility.

sure, but as some-one else has said we have a whole bunch of young kiwis playing football
just as many as in Sydney and probably more than anywhere else in Aus
Nix should take advantage of that and build that development program and development team and connect that with youth and young senior football
'Nix can then make sure they pick the eyes out of the best NZ fooballers that are not destined for Yankie Universities or european/english club academies
plus keep links to those who do go overseas, so we have a connection and network to help recruitment from overseas
and also keeping an eye out to bring those back to NZ who wish to return, who maybe don't quite make it big time overseas, or who do make it but are considering a swansong NZ career, or are simply wanting to come home for other reasons
and if we can get some transfer fees as well as first team reserves or starters, all good
that's how you build a strong club
you generate players and networks for signings
IMHO there is no way we should just ignore NZ youth development, it's too big an opportunity for the 'Nix longer term
a decent effort and some cost short term, but done well you should get the playing and financial payback

I'm playing Devil's adovate here, but do we really think we'll make money out of it?
There are no fees between A-League sides, no rules forcing people taking players at the end of contract to pay developement fees and the best of our youth eye Europe or the states ahead of us.
It's not like Aus where the FFA fund it, it's not like the Warriors where the NRL fund it so we're asking the guys paying for the club in what to now appears to be a minimalist fashion to find another million a year for a model that hasn't been proven to work.
I want a side full of kiwi's as much or more than those that turn up once a week to post how there are plenty of A-League quality players in New Zealand (milkweedman) but can't name any, however it needs to be considered if it is viable.

Given our track record with giving youth a chance you can hardly blame any yougsters for being wary of joining the Nix when the USA route seems to be more successful for developing NZ players.
There are a lot of if's and but's around this whole youth development plan (if there is a plan!) but if the new owners get the club on an even keel and start to get a youth / development / reserve stratgey in place then maybe there is a chance of us developing our own NZ young players properly.
IMHO we need to get the reserve team up and running to get our fringe players and returning from injury players much needed match time and use it as a base to develop us some homegrown youngsters.

I Agree with JD on this, we send heaps of kids over to american colleges, yet how many are going to the big colleges and making it anywhere near the MLS draft?

Probably still more than have made it with the Nix over the last 4 years, and they also get a decent education out of it
