And the players you spoke to had no axe to grind as they are honest and people of good character who would never commit a foul.

I do know Matt C and would be curious to know why you wouldn't turn up to see his team play because of him?

I'm just a little jaded with the ASP. Get sick of Auckland winning. It has lost some of its sexiness! There is also something about watching players you know. S George, the Little brothers, Batty, Rupert Ryan. That was a great team with great local players.

If only we took the risk and found people to do it for us. We would support TW

That $80-90k figure is interesting.

If you pick a flash hotel that's $200/room/night, and you need 15 rooms for your squad of 30 then you're looking at $3000/night. Fifteen nights would be $45k. I'm being fairly generous with those numbers, but let's round it up to $50k anyway.

Then you've got food. Say it costs you $50/day to feed each person. That's $1500/day or a total of $22.5k. Call it $25k.

So there's $75k out of your $90k.

That doesn't actually leave very much to pay players.

Even if you round all those figures down a bit and say the totals are $40 and $20 you're still only left with $30k to spread across a squad of twenty something who have taken two weeks off work.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Good to see Calcott is signing all the talent out of wellington by bringing in a keeper form Auckland who is no better than some of the keepers in Central League

that's like saying my haircut is no better than some haircuts in the A-League!

Please rank Central League keepers in order. Names not necessarily required, just teams. Just so we know what you're talking about.

Also WHO you are talking about (as the signing) would be useful...

He happened to join tw for the o-league at the end of last season, also looks like they're signing one of the strikers that they added to the o-league roster as well

don't really know what you are talking about here - but gk is a specialist position - so if you were going to sign anyone from out of the region..

Alex Carr has been signed for TW for this upcoming season. Its not fair to rank on teams as some keepers have terrible defenders in front of them but ex professional Scott Basalaj is in Wellington currently without a summer league club, would suggest he is better, wouldn't you rather see Wellington talent or out of towners like usual to mimic Auckland City but yet again not make O-League?

Permalink Permalink

Alex is okay! He's young - young people move all the time. And could definitely hold down a place in any (if not every) Central League squad.

Remember some of the other apparent options might not WANT to play NZFC - or may be asking too much/have a better offer somewhere else...

historically he was good. He didn't look to be what he was a couple of years ago when i saw him play a couple of weeks back. That said I have no idea about this other keeper

I agree we should try and sign Wellington based players but after watching a lot of central league this year, i'm not sure I would be busting my gut to sign any Wellington based goalies.

Not saying Alex isn't decent because he is, but there are similar options in Wellington. O'Keefe, who is not much better on average having seen his performances throughout the O-League and some this year, will be a starter because he is Calcott's fave. SO I am curious to see why waste money on bringing in a reserve keeper form Auckland? when you could pick from two or three with similar attributes in Wellington. No doubt he will bring in his usual two players from Australia and it is also rumoured there are two players joining from the UK, one a striker I believe.

Also rumour has it that Andy Bevin is signing as well

that would be a massive kick in the face for Hawke's Bay. Use your own players Wellington...there's enough around!

I'd hope he's brought Carr in on the premise that he's better and he'll challenge for then take the #1 from O'Keeffe.

If not, you're right.

Unless Carr's moving to Wellington for other reasons, then it's a 'might as well' scenario...

might mean Bill Robertson is heading back there and has attracted Bevin. Brett Angell has been reappointed as HBU coach so some of the NCR croud might not want to play for him.

again, that'd be a shame.

If Brett wants Andy, I'd hope Andy gives [Brett] a chance.

Bill to TW's not so much of a travesty - because we (HBU) knicked him off Canterbury in the first place.

But naughty Bill if he's trying to drag people down there. That's not particularly helpful to his role with Napier City.

Other than people's (potentially misguided) pride, I see no reason why Rovers and Hawke's Bay can't have the same type of relationship as Central and Auckland City.

How many of Miramar's squad from LAST season played for Team Wellington?

A lot of speculation going on here regarding a rumoured - and I repeat, a rumour - player going to Wellington

I doubt that Bill would be recruiting for Team Wellington anyway.

Team Wellington recruiting players from outside of Wellington would be nothing new anyway. I think at one game last season we counted more Wellingtonians in the opposition side than the TeeDubs.

Which is where I think the problem lies. Obviously no one would kick up a fuss about a few out of towners with ability that are better than what is around but when there is approx 2 players out of the starting 11 from Wellington for example and some of the players brought in from out of town are no better than what's around, then what is the point? What are youngsters in the Wellington leagues suppossed to do once they get over 20 and can no longer play youth league? Calcott won't exactly pick any of them for TW. I understand that out of a squad of 18 for youth league there may be only 4 or 5 good enough to play NZFC but in Wellingotn there is a 0.1% chance of them getting this opportunity.

A lot of players move to get a chance at the World club Championship and the exposure it bring internationally. (TW in with a shot again this Year)

That helps ACFC recruit the internationals that arrive late season. Its not all $$$$$$$$$

Rumour has it this is very true with Team Wellington's Mike O'keefe heading up to play for Auckland City this summer so he can play at the Club World Cup. Potentially Dan Clark making a return to national league after his stint playing capital 10 for North Wellington
