very decent lineup that. If you get lucky with injuries there's no telling what could come of this season... gotta keep those mids!

I do worry about your depth at striker though. Can voronin do the business?

Never seen pacheco but i've heard a lot of you guys talking up this kid - class act? Will we see him in the prem this year or is he still developing?

Yeah, it is a strong line up. Like you say (and probably the same with the Arse), just need to hope we dont get too many injuries, particularly long term ones.

Yeah, Voronin is okay, and experienced, and I think he does get too much criticism. But I would rather see somebody else who can play up front on their own at a slightly higher level. Don't know too many available. Kuyt sometimes plays up there and has done well in the past.

Yip, this kid (we stole him from Barca) has massive potential. I honestly think, if he develops, he could be a really important part of our squad in the future. Similar to a Benayoun type of player. Good dribbling, creative etc. Don't think you'll see him, maybe in some Cup games, but he's still developing, I think.

Isn't Skrtel out for a month? Agger for him maybe? Great looking line-up otherwise. I actually think that Alonso and Masch will stay but agree with Paulm I'm not sure we have the depth to sustain a challenge. Stevie G goes down and we will struggle. Very exciting though

Realistically at the moment Voronin has to be cover for Torres (ouch, bit of a step down) Benny to cover Gerrard (I'm happy with this, Benny has started to prove his worth)
Even Kuyt can play up front like he does for the Dutch.

Pacheco looks promising but I don't see him making too much of a step up this season. Maybe off the bench in a dead ringer. Rafa will probably look to Nemeth a bit more.

As far as Babel and Dossena are concerned, I'd say they have until December 31 to prove they should still be in the squad. If they don't, sell them for any price and move on...

EDIT:
Oh and I would like to see Jay Spearing given a run, possibly ahead of El Zhar? Should be a good option if we need cover in the midfield. TheKop2009-07-28 10:37:47

Dossena could be on his way to Napoli if a decent price can be agreed on.

The starting 11 and first choice reserves look class.
It's a big season for a few players though. Babel steps up or he's goneburger. Insua looks the goods so losing Dossena is no great loss. Spearing, Pacheco, Plessis, Ngog, Nemeth, El Zhar and Darby all need to progress from where they were last year. If half of them do (fingers crossed) then we're all good.
Personally I like Voronin and hope he does well this season.

Seems like Dossena is going to Napoli, his reputation has dropped 'cos less than 5 million for a 27 year old Italian International with 10 caps. I'd say the Confederations Cup cost us a few million.

Anyone want this Trash to me now

Damn. Couldn't pay me to take that. Just Keane it (get rid of it, cut your losses)

I see rumours that the Alonso saga must be resolved one way or another in the next 48hrs. Mind you, the last deadline came and went.

Is right. This saga is madness. Real should pay up or get lost. I'm so sick of their arrogance.

Good grief...

Arbeloa claims Madrid move is "nearly completed"

Arbeloa: "At present I am only focused on Liverpool but it is true that (the deal) is nearly completed," the 26-year-old told sports daily Marca on Tuesday.

"We'll see what happens in the next few days, if we can all make an effort so the the negotiations come to a good end, and we all come out having benefited, which is what everyone wants.

"I insist that everything is going forwards and everyone is in agreement - I am the one who has the most desire to sign for Madrid.

"I don't know what the likelihood is in percentages, it's a question more for the clubs. But, as I understand, it seems everything is going well and there is little left to resolve. It could all be sealed this week.''

I read a rumour that Carragher knew last year that Arbeloa was keen to leave and that is the reason they had a bust up after a game last year? Can you remember when we won and then the boys went at it? I am so over this Alonso business. I see some rumours (walkon.com) have photos of him in Spain? A secret medical maybe? I wonder how much negotiation the player actually does or is it only the agent who has to be present..

We're leaving it pretty late in the piece to find replacements now. I don't want us to be put in the position where we're scrambling to find someone new in the last few days of the transfer window (especially a replacement for Alonso if it comes to that)

Alonso looks more and more likely to leave as speculation continues and I'm not convinced that Aquiliani is an adequate replacement, from what I hear he is a more of an attacking midfielder and injury prone.

Anyone investigated joining up to 'the Spirit of Shankly' or 'ShareLiverpool'? Doesn't really sound like a viable option to make keep the club at a level similar to other top clubs. But anything seems better than what we currently have.

End of August, isn't it?

Bye bye Arby. Thanks for keeping Messi quiet on debut, that superb goal against Reading. I'll miss your wonderful celebrations with other players!!

F*ck you, Madrid.

Same with Darby. I think these guys are going to have to work really hard this season. I'm glad Carragher is still around to pass on his skills and knowledge.

Alonso has handed in his transfer request and Real will again screw us over again. Hopefully we can again knock 5 past those right-wing Franco bastards.

Looks like Aquiliani will come in as his replacement and I can't say I know much about him. I don't think I've really seen this guy play. Also linked with Lee Cattermole and Michael Turner.

I hope we get some decent players as well as cash out of the sale. Sneijder? Would we take Robben? Negredo? Huntelaar? I feel well gutted that he is going. He has been a legend for us though, Champs league final first goal scorer! Thanks Xabi!....far it feels like someone has died haha

Its just so frustrating! We are so f*cking close to the title; the last thing we needed was two of our most important players leaving/wanting to leave!

Gargh! I went offline, back to the real world hoping this was a bad dream. Obviously not...

I read somewhere (timesonline, admittedly) that Alonso's reps are denying the allegations of him handing in a transfer request! But meh. Probably trying to get my hopes up. And apparently a deal is in place for Aquilani if Xabi goes.

In some better news... Barcelona are pulling out of the Masch transfer debate. Not enough money left after bringing that clown Zlatan in.

I've also read that LFC are rejecting all player+cash offers from Real. Turning down Hunterlaar, Negredo and Van der Fart. $35m cash please Perez...

Good news about Masch. Now his agent and brother can keep their mouths quiet! Ha, I doubt that we'll get Villa as we seem to have to rule out signing him every season! And maybe we could just tell Perez to f*ck off no matter what he says. Arrogant Twit.

Line up: Reina, Johnson, Insua, San Jose, Carragher, Lucas, Mascherano, Gerrard, Benayoun, Kuyt, Torres.

Subs: Cavalieri, Plessis, Degen, Voronin, Riera, Alonso, Kelly, Babel, Ngog, Spearing, Dossena.

LFC 0-1 Espanyol 50 odd min

Almost a full starting lineup. Alonso on the bench...

Update:
LFC 0-2 Espanyol 65 odd min

70min 4 changes and still no Alonso.

Final 3-0
Alonso on for the last couple. Why did you bother? Go have your medical...
Didn't see a lot of the game just bits n pieces online. We looked flat and lethargic. Score line shows it. TheKop2009-08-03 08:54:48

All the Alonso rumours have him finalising the move tomorrow. Rumour also state that we are turning down Huntelaar and Van der Vaart as part of the deal.

Good, I guess. I don't want those Real rejects. Terrible score- I hope we fare better without Xabi in the future! Nothing much. On more game then the Atleti game!!

Don't need him unless we want him to sit on the bench.

What happened to the 48 hour deadline to get the move resolved? Looks like we have signed aquilani. Any ideas on how good he is?
Permalink Permalink
over 16 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History
Nope, never really seen him play. I hear he is quite injury prone- and a player who is a 'talent' but has never really 'pushed on'. He's well-liked by the Roma fans though, got a decent shot on him and is comfortable with both feet.
