Sounds like we are in for Mikyhtarhan or however you spell his name...From reading about him, he is an attacking mid? Maybe we are trying to play like Spain with a packed midfield. Could be amazing if he can fit in with Coutinho and Gerrard. Will have a pretty strong midfield....I wonder if Rodgers is planning on replacing Suarez with another striker when he leaves.

We should actually get some good money from sales if you include Carroll and Suarez. Hope it goes back into the squad

Yeah have read he is quite good and we were looking at him through last season. I thought another attacking mid was an interesting choice as it's certainly not our weakest point but Rodgers has stated we need an extra 30 goals this season to be competitive so I assume that's why. He was golden boot in Ukraine this season just gone I believe, playing out of midfield.

Yeah certainly if Suarez goes, that money HAS to go back into the squad and up front too! Then spend more on the rest of the squad.

See you later AC....have to say I feel a little sorry for him. Hope it works out for him at West Ham...I still think he can be a good player in a team that suits his style....his haircut style I mean

I agree. I've got something of a soft spot for the lad, and wish him all the best at West Ham.

Funny how AC and Luis came to the club in the same transfer window and now it looks like they both leaving in this one.

I really hope the owners re-invest the cash back into the club 50m+ is a descent  transfer kitty spend it wisely Mr Rodgers

Yeah. I'd rather see us keep Suarez if possible, but as that is not looking likely, we need to reinvest wisely. Absolutely need to.

Decent start for us in the fixtures, although with a tough-looking December.

Anyone got the new kit yet?  Thoughts on it if you have?  I haven't ventured into rebel sports for a look yet.  Got to get one before Melbourne.

No mate, I haven't.That home kit is quite nice, to be fair.

Big Andy finally gone. Good luck to him.

Fair bit of transfer news this morning, with Carroll gone and deals for Christian Atsu and Luis Alberto in the works. Exciting stuff.

I'm considering getting the away strip ;-).

Good luck Andy C. Hope it works out for you. Reading that we now are after Luis Alberto and Atsu? El-P know anything about them?

Luis Alberto has done really well in Barcelona B. He's sort of a 'false 9', if you like. Good finisher, and creative too. And he made a few starts for Sevilla the season before. I think he'll take the role of Shelvey in the squad to be honest. A young, versatile midfielder. Technically is really strong, though. He's good. But he didn't make the Spain U-21 squad which, while it is ridiculously stacked, is probably an indicator that he isn't that good. Could turn out to be a useful player though.

Not sure on Atsu, I've not watched him. I've read he's a bit of a headless chicken type of player (see: Benji Totori). He's still young, I suppose, and apparently he was quite good under AVB. But yeah, wouldn't know too much there, to be honest.

Sound like Luis Alberto deal will be done tomorrow- apparently got his medical all booked in.

Who knows what is going on with this Armenian lad. Wish we could tie up the deal, but seems to be something which will drag on for a while. I've not seen a lot of him, but he's meant to be really good.

As an aside, whatever happened to that TheKop lad who used to post on here? He was sound.

Guardian is reporting that Rafa is making a play to get Suarez to Napoli.

Hmmm........

Permalink Permalink

Be ridiculous, that. Suarez under Rafa. Christ. The stuff dreams are made of.

Permalink Permalink

Aspas move held up due to money being owed to a few different parties, wonder if the deal will end up going thru

Alberto has officially signed, Mignolet on his way to Anfield for a medical. I guess that means Reina is going regardless now. Sad. He's been awesome.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Reina- good enough for Barcelona. Not good enough for Liverpool. Go figure.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Yeah I don't really like how this played out. Seems as though he's happy to stay and it was interest only from Barcelona whilst Valdez was deciding what he'd do but signing a new keeper pretty much makes it certain he'll go.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Yeah. Apparently Rodgers was saying that Mignolet will just be competition for Reina? Hmmm.

Permalink Permalink

Quite a bit of cash for a backup keeper. Hmmmm indeed.

On the good news front..... Stevie is back training a couple of weeks ahead of schedule. Hopefully see him in Aus in a few weeks.

Permalink Permalink

Agree, way to much money to spend on a "back up" keeper.  Going to be interesting to see how it pans out.  I'm guessing Reina will give us one more year and then go to barca when Valdes contract is up.

Saw the new kit at rebel on sat looks good will deffo buy before the Melbourne pilgramage.

Did you guys sell Shelvey?

Nice one robags, you must be looking forward to the Melbourne game now! And yeah, Reina possibly giving us another year until Valdes leaves probably makes sense.

Nope, haven't sold Shelvey yet. Apparently we are looking to sell him though. There's a good footballer in there, somewhere, but he's regressed this year under Rodgers.

We almost have a decent squad. But we're still behind everyone who finished ahead of us (except arguably Everton) in terms of quality. And if you lot and Spurs both strengthen, we're going to need our signings to have a huge effect and our key players will have to stay fit.

Not sure losing Suarez is the right direction to take. If he goes though, I hope we make some boss signings with the money. We'll need them.

That's a good point about our strength relative to the squads above us EP.

I wonder what Rodgers' timeframes are for the goal of getting back in to the champions league? Because for me that is related to your point.

If top 4 is the aim for this season, then I think you're right that the squad is still too soon. But if he's being realistic, Europa League might be a more realistic goal, which might mean a slow and steady approach to squad building as well.

Either way I've been pretty pleased with the signings so far. Either that or just relieved that we're actually making signings!

Yeah. I think football is fudgeed how quickly they sack managers now. I don't like Rodgers, I've made that clear, but he needs time for us to accurately judge him. If we can have a good year this year - if we can make actual, tangible, 'progress' - then he'll be okay. Personally, I think we need to be in the hunt for the CL places in March. None of this playing well when the pressure is off because we're so far behind. We need to be up there. We've got (on paper) a nice start to the season. But football isn't played on paper, and we need to get off to a belter of a start.
I agree, though. We should be aiming for Top Four, although it's a big ask for the squad we have at the moment, but if we end up Europa League with a reasonable season, then we can try and push on. The longer we spend out of the CL the harder it is to get back in. Hopefully Coutinho will carry on being boss.
Yep, it's great to have made a few signings early! Hoping we can get this Armenian lad as well.
Are you heading to Melbourne as well Fitzy?

I was listening to a podcast last night and it was talking about how liverpool's form in the last half of the season was top 4 material but was scuppered by our dreadful start to the season.  (and what a rubbish start it was)  I can understand why with Rodgers implementing a new system and all, so hopefully with getting the signings in early, getting them settled, selling unwanted players, sorting the Suarez saga out we "should" have a good couple weeks of preseason drama free.  But we will see.  A hopeful theroy!

Permalink Permalink

Yeah... I think as the season went on, Rodgers stopped trying to implement his 'philosophy' and started to be more pragmatic. But we were constantly above 5 points behind the Top Four, so having no pressure made it easier to play. It was a strange season, because we never really had momentum. Every time it looked like we could push on, we'd drop silly points (see: Aston Villa/ West Brom at home).

But yeah, I'm trying to be more positive, so hopefully everyone will be settled and ready to go for the new season!

Quietly optimistic about where we're heading for now. I figured regarding Rodgers, the best thing the club could do was give him 3 -5 uninterrupted years so he could build without worrying about getting sacked due to short term results. We're not going to just be able to throw money as a way of getting back up the table so building is the only way and I think that's happening now.

You guys will have an awesome time. Melbourne is so freaking cool, hope they roll out some superstars.

Mignolet confirmed, sounds like Miktyran or however you spell his name is less than certain now with Dortmund keen.

I did read some interesting rumours last night. Monaco and Barca are keen on Agger (although he seems like the loyal type, turning down City last year). Also Man City are dead keen on Suarez. More dramas and movements coming I am sure.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

I hope if Suarez leaves, he leaves the league. Watching him help City would suck (and go against all his stated reasons for leaving).

I think Agger got YNWA tattooed on his knuckles so yeah, I'm sure he's keen to stay!

Bummer if we miss out on Mkhitaryan. Haven't seen him play but everything I've read is very positive.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Yep. That'd be a joke if Suarez goes to City. And yeah, can't see Agger going anywhere, to be honest. He's boss.

I really want us to sign Mkhitaryan out of all the players we've signed/ been linked with. If Kloppo wants him, I'm sold.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Good to see mignolet sign.  I am sort of doubting that we will get mkhitaryan but I'm more than happy to be proved wrong!  What's next on the list lads?  Where else to we need to strengthen?  Skrtel to leave? What sort of formation do you see Rodgers setting us out like?  I know he loves 4 3 3 but to be fair to him he was willing to change.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

If we are selling Skrtel, then we need a really boss centre-back. And I guess we are trying to get Ilori to replace Coates. Much prefer Seba, to be honest. I think he's going to be a cracking player.

Hmmm. I think we will probably set out similar to last year. Sturridge up front, Coutinho on the left, maybe Mkh (if we get him) to play where Hendo played last year (behind the striker, but running around, dropping deep etc), then Lucas and Gerrard as a two man midfield. I guess Aspas (or Suarez, if he stays) could start on the right? Ha, I'm probably well off here, and we're trying to play 4-3-3! Interesting to see what he does with Allen too. I'm not sure he was entirely convinced with Henderson, y'know.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Yeah I have no idea what our XI would be right now, formation wise at least. Can't see Allen getting much time on the field which is fine by me. Could almost have a stab at a 442 but no freaking idea otherwise.

Permalink Permalink
almost 13 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

Some pretty interesting questions huh? Will Downing get any time? Does Hendo keep playing or Allen (there was a time when Allen played quite well). I think BR is pretty keen on a rotating front 3 so maybe Sturridge, Coutinho and Alberto? Aspas? Mikey? Gerrard just behind then Lucas and someone else! Who knows....

Hearing rumours that we are after Alderweild from Ajax. I know nothing about him, but I get the feeling Rodgers wants Skrtel gone huh?

In other news boys...pre-season kicks off vs Preston on 13 July...that is like two weeks away!!

Haven't posted for a while. Quit job to spend more time with jazz Jr , had major hassles sorted out new gainful employ while still getting time with Jr. All sorted so...

Interesting off season. I remain yet to be convinced by Rodgers. Comes across as someone who talks a bloody good game but when comes time to actually coach , he's less solid. Having said that , there were times during the seaon  where I did detect a more pragmatic approach so , for me , jury's still out. But I am prepared to give him a while longer before making a final verdict- I hate the revolving door policy of managers so a while longer , Brendon old son.

Signings are all a bit unknown for me ( 'cept Mignolet- like him). Lots of promise potentially but that's it. Also , and what's worrying me a bit ; all similar players. How's he fit them in with Coutinho? But that's what we are now- can't attract the world class performers at without CL , and may lose the one we've got so..As for Suarez , all his public cock sucking of Real means he can piss off . Great  , great player but just a mercenary shark. Having said that , I don't actually blame him for wanting to play at the highest level he can. Just come out and explain that ; a lot of us would understand.Just don't give us this " the media is driving me out bollocks". The media didn't make you nibble Ivanovic. When Gerrard was out for a while  , the team actually played better  ( had to , really). May happen here too ; and I do expect Suarez to go.

We need a big season from Lucas , IMO. Hasn't recovered from his injury yet , to my eyes.Crucial player when fit. And I'd like to see a more measured use of Sterling and Suso.Overdone last year but both very very promising. Yesil- not up to it yet but did his knee so we'll see how he goes when fully fit.

As for Melbourne , Jr and I can't wait. Everything booked , we're both really looking forward to trip.YNWA!!!!!
