Great reading over on Glory Glory

Best one:

Yes. Just a completely expected one! I say we try cut a deal. Poch needs to get on the batphone to Wenger and agree an arrangement whereby we allow them to score 2 goals with minimal resistance (sort of like WBA's goal today but x 2), so long as they promise not to try for anymore after 2 nil. They get to rest their legs for Europe and we get out of their place with a 'respectable' 2 nil defeat. Win, win!

Monreal reported as being out for 4 weeks according to ESPN. I'm getting nervous.

So we're down to 4 fit defenders in September. Couldn't have seen that coming!

That's brilliant.

Also:

"Is it a humiliation if we expect it?"

Hahaha. They're predicting Szczesny to be the first mouth to open in the media before the weekend, bad mouthing Sp*rs. Not a bad call at all.

Let's hope that these youngesters (namely Hayden) look the business! He might be doing more than playing for the reserves soon.

League Cup exit: Winners

Hmmmmmm. Haha.

It's only half time though, so a lot can change. Not watching the game but from forum reading sounds like it's fairly even, Soton just on top. Two great goals too by the sounds of it. Not quite the starting 11 we thought it would be either!

All I can say is 'meh'. a 2-1 home defeat to a strong SOTON squad beaten by a screamer & a penalty, vs a Sanchez FK I'm not too worried.

And we're out. Fair play Southampton, go on and win it.

Would have been nice for some of the squad players to get another round or two of competitive games but ah well, bigger fish to fry.

And Wenger said after the soton game that mertesacker and gibbs both have minor niggles.

This is frightening.

Also some interesting comments from Wenger after the game on Diaby - sounds like he's working on turning him into a deeper-lying midfielder. Pretty good option really. He already has all the ball skills and the physical stature, just needs to learn to position himself well.

What a great free kick from Sanchez, deserved to be a winner. Absolutely perfect. His set pieces haven't been much good so far so it was due. Little odd both he and Wilshere played the full 90 minutes though, does that mean they won't be starting the NLD? Would certainly be starting Sanchez personally, he's already our best player.

Yeah, had been reading the same thing Paul. In theory it sounds great. I really, really hope for Diaby he has turned a corner. If he can move on with some non injury plagued football, he will be very exciting. Like the comments around Rosicky, saying that his extensive injuries meant his body wasn't as aged as someone continually playing. Let's hope the same can happen for Diaby. But with measured expectations!

Plus as a deeper lying midfielder you usually are the one dishing out the kicking, rather than receiving it. I think Diaby works best as a box-to-box type midfielder with a skew towards the final third.

I'd like to see the following line up:

                      Szy

Chambers BFG  Kosc   Gibbs

             Arteta   Ramsey

Sanchez      Ozil         Cazorla

                  Welbeck

We need to keep the high pressing game & dominate the midfield.

This, absolutely.

Ramsey isn't in the greatest form, but needs to play thorugh it. Wilshere wasn't spectacular from what I have read in regards to Soton game.

Cazorla / Ox is another possible change and I wouldn't be too concerned between either of them, but yeah, the rest pick themselves.

That's absolutely the strongest lineup at the moment, but Sanchez played 90 minutes in midweek so may not be intended to start this. Should do though. This is a cool graphic I've just come across showing player's positions in the first half vs City the other week. Defence looks shocking with a ridiculous amount of space for Aguero and Silva through the middle.

Permalink Permalink

Interesting graphic.

I think the space between the CBs might have a lot to do with the time they spend there when we have the ball - mainly when our keeper has it.

Our general style when we have the ball at the back is for the FBs to push way up like wingers and the CBs to split off towards the flanks.

There's no way Kosc/Sack would be just hanging out near the sidelines with Aguero and Silva sitting in the middle, that's madness and would've resulted in 10-0.

Most interesting watching Ozil - remember in that game he was 'playing on the left' according to pretty much everyone, but as he always does, regardless of starting position, he is floating side to side, and surprisingly spending the vast majority of his time roughly in the middle in this half in particular.
I really think this Ozil on the left vs in the middle is a non-issue. Wherever he starts he plays his game how he likes, moving side to side all day. It's really about the movement of the players around him - as someone else said earlier.

I think that's absolutely our best lineup as well Brumbys and we just have to play that against c*cks.

I didn't see the Soton game the other day but Arseblog reckoned Coquelin had a stormer at LB - anyone see that? Be great if he can be an option at FB in bigger games to help ease our defensive crisis. He'll likely get a chance somewhere in the next month while Monreal is out.

I dont think Ramsey has been playing poor. It just he started the season with a bang and now he is playing more solid rather than spectacular. If sanchez starts then id have Ox on the other flank. I think the runs that sanchez and carzola make are too similar, as well as their style of play.

I think it's Cazorla's one-touch passing and interplay with the midfielders that gets him in there.

If we have a very fast player on one side, Wenger always prefers to go with someone a little more technical on the other side, just for the balance. He's spoken about that a few times in the past and has always preferred to play that way.

I guess he hasn't been poor, he just hasn't been Ramsey (of late). I'd play him over Wilshere regardless.

That graphic was rather interesting. Flamini and Wilshere inside the circle the whole time basically!

Ramsey's had a few shocking moments though, cross field balls not even close to target etc. But again, he can pop up and score a winner, still puts in the miles, and makes most of his passes. Future Arsenal captain should be starting ;-)

Looking forward to the day with Ramsey & Jack start in the middle together as Cap & Vice Cap absolutely running the show.

I think Wenger is giving Sanchez plenty of game time to adjust, and he's adjusting well. I'd happily expect him to back up after a midweek game where the weekend before he was rested.

Love him already. He's become our best player almost instantly and absolutely runs himself into the ground every game.

Disappointing. Completely dominated them from start to finish, one poor pass in our defensive third costs us.

Three for me, and two for them.

Poor result. All over them but once again just no cutting edge in the final third. 2 wins from the first 6 games is just not good enough. Chelsea must be licking their lips ahead of next weekend.

I'm truly baffled by not starting Sanchez and/or Cazorla. The Ox looked great, Ramsey or Wilshere should have started but not both.

Permalink Permalink

Doesn't make any sense with Sanchez. Could understand resting him last week because he'd played so much and ran himself into the ground every game. But to play him for 90 minutes in a league cup game we obviously didn't care about and then not start him against Spurs is ridiculous. You start your best players in the big games, that shouldn't be up for debate.
