The benefit is we get to say we've signed a former england and premier league manager, and the man who gave Becham the captaincy in our press releases.

Oh and picked Heskey to get his first England cap. Fits in well with NZF as his win% as a manager is under 25% in all comps.

I was reading the latest British article on Hudson and I was wondering if all the time between games means that he actually talks himself into beliieving what he says, whereas if he had more time with the team and more fixtures he'd have a bit more of a reality check.

It will be interesting to see if he's still as upbeat (best all whtites squad ever, etc) after the games against the US and Mexico.

I thought that too at first, but I think he is being quite disingenuous.

In the two articles I have seen he has claimed he has had a great start in NZ, he neglects to mention that in his first 2 years the All Whites played only 6 games before the Oceania Nations Cup (in which they won only 1), he doesn't mention that he used 38 different players in his first 4 games and while he goes on about NZ qualifying for the Confederations Cup unbeaten, for a guy who loves to name check (see the number of pics of him with famous coaches in the Mirror article) he definitely doesn't name check any of the teams we played in winning the Oceania Nations Cup.

These articles smack of self promotion and I reckon he is angling for a half decent All Whites showing in Russia and then he can get a job at an English club (as boss or assistant)

Of course if he manages to get us to the World Cup in Russia 2018 I will forgive him, but I doubt this will happen

Unfortunately the interview cut off early as the on demand feed switched to rugby, from the short part online he said:

1) He'd rather choose a young guy who he thinks can step up and is the future of NZ football than a seasoned pro in Scandinavia who is at the end of their career. The main reason for that is that if you don't have a Europena or Australian passport you're stuck here and can't develop.

2) We financially can't afford to join Asia with all the travel costs.

So do all these players with pro gigs in Scandineva have European passports?

I think James has a british passport, and Keat was a pro already with the LA Galaxy when picked up (he'd gone through the US College system), don't know about the rest.

I like it how he has empathy for the young players in this country.

On the topic of how sharkty our passport is for young players would it be any different if we were part of CONMEBOL or Asia in providing our young players professional pathways? I wonder why we don't have any in South America plying their trade.

Veitch is nothing but a cheerleader. He's so matey matey it makes me ill. Same as Dardy W.

It's a shame these guys feel they have to brown nose so much. I'm all for the media being on good terms but those guys are next level. What ever happened to journos peeling the onion to get to the issue rather than asking the superficial stuff?

Sports journalism has gone the way of pop music these days - all fluff and no substance.

If Hudson was being genuine (which I have no reason to doubt) it's at least good to hear he is on good terms with the CEO. The last thing we need is any more dysfunction at NZF.

October is shaping as a big window for us. Commercially it's a good chance to put the AWs back in the spotlight. From a playing point of view it's an opportunity for Hudson to prove a few of us wrong.

The only thing from that interview that really stood out though is our reliance on winning the confeds money. Basically says our financial stability and therefore AW international  programme is THAT fragile.

Yeh Ifill was pretty blunt in saying it was a bad move all round. Better to have someone here helping coach the locals rather than someone in England, where our players actually know how to play.

That was I was thinking. Those pro players in pro environment don't need someone who to get fit. Not sure if they take him even serious.

We need someone like Ifill to take a de-motivated Hamish Watson and make him love football again. Work on the weakest links and lift them to the next step.

NZF don't like it when difficult questions are asked.  Didn't they bank Andrew Gourdie recently (might have been around the eligibility saga erupted)

Piney said something along the lines that he never gets access either, they seem to intentionally choose non footballing people.

Seems like a stupid strategy.

Unless the strategy is to get people who don't give a toss about football to go "oh, yeh right" and then go straight back to not giving a toss about football. Much like the interview was interrupted by a provincial rugby game.

People like Piney and Gourdie who have fought for coverage where there's been fudge all, and given us fantastic work above and beyond are the ones who will convince people to be new fans. Or provide interesting ways to package info like the AWs power rankings. I'm fairly much a fan after listening to Piney's commentary for the first season.

Unless the strategy is simply damage limitation above all else.

You just had to laugh when during an interview with the NZ Football coach they were giving away All Blacks v Lions tickets to callers and you had to switch to ZB half way through.

If NZF were smart theyd have given tickets to the WQC in Nov to start that promotion.

It's just so amateur and so indicative of the stranglehold rugby has on sport media in NZ.

I love the work Piney and Geordie do. They ask the right questions and know their stuff. I'd love to know from Piney himself how he goes when it comes to getting an interview with Hudson.

It seems Mr Hudson lives in a world that is someway removed from reality. The truth is at the time of his appointment it was generally agreed that we had the most talented batch of young players that the AW's had ever had. We had for the first time attacking options with players like Thomas, Rojas, Costa etc who were in good pro clubs playing exciting football.

Fast forward two years and I think that AW football is considerably worse off.....in fact catastrophicaly worse off This has nothing to do with lack of games. Its due to the appointment of an inexperianced coach who, while great at power point presentation and taking selfies with world coaching stars appears to lack the ability to coach.

I could go on about the devaluation of the AW shirt by handing out international caps(40+) like confetti, I could go on about the failure to grasp that there is no way kids playing amateur local football can foot it at international level. What is obvious to any football observer is that this guy is struggling.

When you observe a coach the first thing you look out for is what style of football they are trying to coach. Its their choice and they live or die by the results. Ricki had a style and he was at times very succesful. You always new what you were going to get.

Hudson came in and said he was a Bielsa disciple. It became quite obvious after his first half a dozen games that he didn't have a clue how to coach this style of football. Fast forward to the last tournament. Hudson decided to play longball in Papua NG. He had a longish camp before hand to impliment this style with his players. But the AW's play in PNG was terrible ....they  got through with a huge slice of luck. It appears that he is unable to coach longball either.

So what to the future.....he is now consulting the Pep Guadiola of English football.....Sam Alladyce. Long ball Sam!!!! perhaps he will try and perfect this technique against Mexico and the USA. In the meantime we are seeing articles like in the Mirror. 100% self promotion.

Mr Hudson is just setting himself up for his next step. He will spread the word that he now has Taylor, ex England coach working under him. He will do the Confederations cup. Get more selfies with famous people and then leave NZ....pointing out that the thrashings the AW's recieved were beyond his control as he got no support in NZ

Should have appointed Ramon...at least he knows how to coach!!!!!

Can I also point out that this Allardyce thing is complete cack - all he has said is he can call Allardyce up and talk to him, which literally anyone can do.

Allardyce will not know any of our players, our opponents and will have never have watched us play so cannot give any meaningful advice.  This is literally one coach ringing another for a chat about football but Hudson knows this will look like he is some super connected coach to an unsophisticated sports media so drops the name in there...

If you consider comparative competitions Ricki's record of playoffs was OK too. Both have never been relegated!

There isn't even relegation in the A league, and when Rikki left we were well on our way to the wooden spoon.
