Very. Snow melted straight into ground would you believe. Sun is out spasmodically and gentle breeze blowing. May need more wind to dry out, welcome to bring some with you. Game on, hope you like playing in the cold.

Feverish have the grounds in Wellington be wet this season as I heard that the had been a few cancellations this season up there.

I imagine Feverish is at the shoe-shop trying to find 11 pairs of gumboots with sprigs in them, so I'll make a few comments:

Some of the differences between grounds in Chch and Wgtn are that Chch has many grounds on a sand-base (eg Cuthberts Green) which seem to drain better than the more clay-like soils in Wgtn. Wgtn also have many grounds on flat-surfaces at the base or in the middle of slopes, so the fields catch the run-off. Most Chch fields are on the flat with the nearest slope being the Port Hills, so Chch fields are less likely to have to deal with water running-off the slope.  What Wgtn is starting to get in its favour is the emergence of artificial surfaces such as Te Whaea and Wakefield Park. Gets rid of the mud and the bobbles, but not the wind (and they can still be wet).

Sure can - 1-1 after 90 minutes.
1 - 1 after extra time with coastal hitting the post in the very last kick of the game.
Then penalty Kicks - I think it was 3-3 after sudden death and then coastal won after about the 7th or 8th attempt in penalty kicks.
A very exciting game - Linfield Park in excellent condition considering the weathe rhis week - good crowd - well done girls.

Yes, double that confirmation. Penalties went on so long Wharfies keeper even took one (that was saved). Top game, had it all. Gotta love penalties.

In MPL news, Coastal beat Tech 2-0 and retain Hurley Shield, Bays beat Nelson 4-3 in early game. Dramarama in relegation battle with Nomads winning 2-1 and Utd losing 2-1 therefore it was even points, even goal difference, but it goes down to goals scored, and Utd scrape through. That's how I've heard it, could be proved wrong...

One nil to Nomads at half time. Western had a penalty with 15 to go, saved by the Nomads keeper, ref happy with save and to follow play, not even a hint from the ref he thought it could be ruled out nor anyone else at the park including those by the goal line had any doubt's with the save, next time ball out ref ref spots young lino with flag up making the biggest bullsh*t call [must have got his badge off a Weetbix box] that the keeper moved before kick taken, just the same as every other GK in world football does when making a penalty save. One foot moves before the other and back foot still on the line.
Retaken penalty was scored to make it one each, Nomads pushed in the last ten got the second but never got a clear look to get a third.
I'm sure the Matt Thomas save vs Nomads a few weeks ago Matt moved further and not pinged for it. If the Nomads keeper had jumped forward before diving agree call it but he didn't.
So officials want respect. Yeh right.
I was always told at refs coaching with national league refs make the big calls, make sure the're 150% correct and the game looks after it self, don't become the talking point after the game.
What happened to refs that actually know about the game and not just doing an exam?

Good on the Coastal girls for getting to the final.
Although a shame that this game had to be played when other games are on.
All the best for next weekend all clubs from this area should be behind you bringing the cup down south.

Yes good luck to Coastal but they will need to lift alot if they want to win the Final. Overall was  disappointed with the game with too many mistakes from both sides, with the standard in the first half poor with Coastal scoring just before the break.

Coastal then missed two great chances after the break which should have wrapped up the game. Karori's penalties not that flash with the four they missed all hit straight to the keeper.

I heard ChCh United's goal as an own goal so relegation decided in the end by a dodgy call by an assistant and a own goal.

Heard that in the Nomads game a yellow was issued for dissent when a player told the linesman in question "it's not about you lino". How true indeed.

Shame that it comes down to this between relegation and staying up huh? Oh well, could be a 10 team league next year anyways.

Well done to all at Coastal on a good finish for your first year at the top level.
That Matt Thomas penalty save has worked out well for you guys getting 3rd and came back to bite Nomads as a point in that game would have helped.
Bring on the likes of Parklands & Waimak to Tulett Park next season, maybe have to chip in and put a bar shout on every time the boys hit double figure scores, give them something to play for each game.

Yip, defo a chance to save the season with a penalty in the last minute. What could have been.

Isn't it a random table with the top two teams (and 6th!) the only two teams that have positive goal differences?

Not so much as random maybe more to do with the overall standard, or lack, compared to other season's. Only two teams, Bays and Suburbs that won more than 50% of their games, with Nomads 18 points the highest total for any team that has finished in bottom place.

Bloodly hope it is not a 10 team league as this would weaken the over standard even more, so would debate it cannot get any lower.

News / rumours coming out of the Nelson area is that Richmond may not be going to enter the play-offs due to a lack of money for travel costs in the Mainland PFL. If this it true you heard it here first.

Wow that would be a massive call, considering the effort that has gone into getting them where they are. Surely that decision needs to be made asap in order to sort the playoff situation out. Sure FC2011 will be happy bout it.

I hear there was a meeting at Richmond late this week this was the word around the sidelines at Saxton Field today. If it is true, best to make it now rather than once the season has started.

If it true FC would need to start signing more than a few players for 2012, if not then likely to finish bottom on the form that they have shown this season.

Fair call. When things go wrong for me I always blame Vim.
Absolute ding dong battle, tough to go out on penalties. Some high quality football mixed with some average stuff but nobody walked away disappointed with the game regardless of which team they supported. Felt it was a good advert for the womens game. Yes both sides made plenty of mistakes but that was more a reflection of the intensity of the game and the poor pitch. Coastal defence dealt with Leota et al extremely well. Funny thing was both teams goals during normal time were scrappy affairs while better chances went begging. But that's football.

Cheers. 3rd in the MPL, 2nd in the WMPL, finalist in Women's National Knockout Cup, last 16 of the Chatham Cup, Hurley Shield holders into 2012, Sunday League Div 1 champions, Mens Div 3 & 4 Champions etc. etc. Not a bad year. Bolam Cup and Reta Fitzpatrick Cups to come. Woot! In our 4th year, the futures looking Coastal.

Coastal the only team to take all 9 points off Nomads and all 3 games by 1 to nil.
Last 8 games of season shows that Nomads executive left it too long before getting original coach out of it, they went to do it in May and then the person doing the hiring and firing bottled it.

Last 8 games
Bays    6   wins 1 draw 1 loss
Nelson   3, 4, 1
Coastal 4, 4, 0.
Nomads 5, 1, 2,
Nomads results with the same squad as at the start of the season including the two PDL team players that started v Western.
Spoke to Parklands president today and they will not have a team next year in Div 1.
That could leave if FC2011 win promotion, just Nomads, Varsity, Waimak and Mid Canterbury going for promotion in 2012.

Div 1 was a bit of a shambles this year anyway to be honest. Just 6 teams with one (Western) unable to be promoted. What needs to happen is all those teams that were able to field a team in the PDL (15 team league) must also have a team in the MPL or Div 1, thus bringing in the likes of Selwyn, Pap Redwood, Cashmere.

And perhaps with this Richmond 'I might not wanna play anymore' thing, perhaps we have a competition that isn't automatic promotion for Div 1, we make it: if your club has the systems/facilities in place, and you are winning your league you state you are keen at the beginning of the season and if all goes well the bigwigs at Mainland accept your offer??? I don't know how any of this works but it had reasoning in my head at this early hour. Feel free to improve/hassle.

The issue with Richmond is they ignored their youth by focussing on these imports, four of them which have left already and at least one more to jump ships to Nelson next year. If they had qualified, their first division team would be so pants. Three of Waimea Colleges best players are at Suburbs.. Luis Garcia2011-08-21 10:14:01

Thanks for the update LG. Who have left? I know Yong and Green, with the latter moving to Suburbs paid role next year. All year we've heard about these amazing imports.

No word on the final venue as yet but talk was likely to be either in Auckland on the Saturday 27th or could be in Palmerson North, Memorial Park before the Chathan Cup Final in Sunday 28th.

I agree 100% with the no team in MPL/Div 1 = no PDL...should be the same for the knock out cups. If that means the Academy is homeless so be it.

Maybe we need to go back to the playoff for promotion/relegation. No point relegating a strong-ish team for one that is total pants but won an even worse competition

Yes the promo/relegate has its own positives and negatives, it's hard to say which is better. If it is a strong Div 1, then it makes sense for straight promotion, however if not....

NZ soccer says the womens final might also be on the wknd of the 3rd/4th of Sep.
