That's good I picked Richmond not knowing. So either I was right or at least everyone is wrong too haha

Some of us need more points than others so did a bit of research before betting.  

Altho it looks as if the Western FC2011 game is the only one that is possible for anyone to gain points on anyone else.

Closer than people may have thought. Coastal top team? 

Coastal definitely the better team, but could quite easily have been all square at the break. Easy to under estimate Parklands based on actual results rather than performances so far this season.

Finished 5-1 eventually and even the 'Coastal Train' and supporters were behaved ;)

Not sure who the ref was though today but some very random decisions which threatened to ruin the game, with some players booked by both teams that were questionable (some Parklands dissent ones were understandable but actually came from the refs decisions!)

Nomads almost with the upset. Varsity score to lavel 1-1 in time added on.

Varsity won 3-2 AET.

Nomads good in first half, fell off after that.. Pretty poor spectacle, div 1 side more interested in hacking players and hoofball. In saying that you need to adjust to that style of play. Took 85 mins for uni to react, fair play to Nomads they worked hard..

Bays down to 10 men in first half: a bit harsh IMO. Maybe a yellow, but defo not a red... 

End result for Selwyn v Waimak was 3-0.

Great evening down at Foster park (2nd half the wind kicked up which kind of ruined it a little)

I thought both teams played some great football.  In the end Selwyn did create more chances and the result was fair (IMHO)

Awesome to see a decent crowd (estimate 300) down there as well.

One heck of an effort put in by Selwyn to make this a special night. Music, coffee and drinks on tap, announcer for scorers , subs etc. Curtain raiser of juniors. Ballboys.  Great atmosphere  from pretty decent crowd at best facility in town.

The first team played Chatham Cup under reasonably average lights at Foster Park. Despite having lost twice already this season to Selwyn they competed brilliantly in the first half. 

However went behind to a late goal from a set play. The game was dominated by a strong wind particularly in the second half and on a hard ground it made good football difficult. Selwyn extended their lead from another set play midway through the second half and then late in the game, also from a set play, Waimak conceded again 0-3. 

The young Waimak side was never outplayed and played with outstanding committment and passion, and the final score probably flattered Selwyn. Outstanding performers for Waimak were Lucas Clark, James Hurren, and Luke Fraser. But the whole team deserves credit for their performances.

-  Bit of a harsh call on the lights being average I thought, a few tweaks to be made in the corners - but quite a lot better than English Park.  Both teams played very well especially in the 1st half.  The wind in the 2nd half did change the game somewhat.  Even made Lee Padmore who made it on the pitch look fast.

Tech would destroy most sides in Div1 except Nomads and Chch Utd by a large margin. Just goes to show how piss poor div1 has become, every season it's the same old story... same teams promoted and relegated. Selwyn/waimak are all show and no go and if it wasn't for their juniors they would be in burwood/parklands shoes.

Mmh. Dissapointing but not really out of character to see some and in particular Waimak not so gracious in defeat.

Dragoon you must have stood close to the Waimak Facebook Editor. Selwyn played the better football and could have easily been 6-0. Waimak always plays with commitment and passion, but also a lot of hoofball. Selwyn did well in the second half by keeping it on the deck. 

Don't get me wrong - I thought Selwyn played some stunning football out there last night, and agree they played a lot of it around the park on the deck.  But can't take away from Waimaks first half efforts they played very well.  But the result was always going in favor of one team that night. ;)

Why, what happened?

Shows how much you've obviously seen in the Championship this season! Chch Utd and Nomads I wouldn't even class in the same bracket. Nomads are definitely clearly the best team in the league so far, but again they're not on par with the top teams in the MPL.

Saying that they've played better than Uni's did against Coastal the other week, but then as yesterday, plus last week proved, Uni's can get the results when needed.

All the teams in the Championship could quite easily take points off each other as the season progresses. Teams are quick to write Parklands off if they haven't seen the games, but as Coastal found out yesterday they are not to be underestimated.

Couple interesting points made. Over the course of a season, yes you would expect the top MPL sides to beat the top div1 sides. The strength and depth of the Cash Tech, Coastal etc would be well above those of Selwyn, Nomads etc. The reserves of those MPL sides also play at a higher level and against better players (arguably) than the reserve div1 league. That then breeds a stronger squad where player rotation due to form, injuries, the hell  of it, is less of an issue.

I can't speak for the other div1 squads, but at Selwyn if we can get our top team in the pitch then in a 1 off game we would be ok. No way saying we will beat Tech if we get them in the next round of the cup, but I would think it wouldn't be a 17-0 loss. Over the course of 21 games it is very different and whoever goes up from div1 will 1st look at staying up the next season and then go from there. The senior squad at Selwyn  (1st and reserves) is markedly stronger than even 2 years ago but still needs improving. 

Look at leagues around the world, this year apart, no side from near the bottom of or newly promoted has succeeded in a top league. Yes those teams may have competed against top sides but quality shows through. Any side that gets promoted will look to strengthen. If you are a top footballer coming to the region, you probably wouldn't look at div1 as a place to play. You would want to test yourself against the better players, so it goes from there. 

If you can't attract the better players in Div1 then you need to try and build a culture to have it as a great place to play. I think that is what Selwyn is trying to do. We have done ok considering it was essentially a 'country social kick around' club not too long ago. It is testament to the progress that now the club has 2 Canterbury youth players and Dan Ede who was in the larger senior squad. These players had offers to go to other teams but chose Selwyn. 

If you look at the Tech side of course as a supporter of the club you would expect to win against div1 opposition. They have many Canterbury senior and youth team players and 1 (soon 2) former All Whites. I think any side who draws them in the next round of the cup will be underdogs, but in a 1 off game who knows what could happen. I don't think anyone envisaged them beating Burwood 17-0 for a start.

Nothing happened. 10cc has had a dramatic reaction to a comment on Waimak facebook site about the standard of lighting at Foster park. The comment was based on feedback from the players and supporters. The facebook site reflects our take on the game and we accept that this may not be the same as the opposition or experts expressing their opinion under nom de plumes such as 10cc.

Has 10cc ever watched the Man united football channel.

For the record we have the utmost respect for the Selwyn club and their hierarchy. Last night we bought into the occasion and enjoyed the challenge. We did change our game to suit the conditions in an attempt to confront Selwyn more than we had in our previous two encounters. In my opinion we were more competitive and appeared to frustrate them with our tactics.

Our side is mostly teenagers and we are rebuilding. They learn from every experience including how to lose with dignity and respect.

It's interesting the attitude to the qualifying league especially from the MPL clubs that have been there before. Coastal managed to get there despite being a merger of 2 previous National league clubs, Technical got there as a result of them commiting to the future of Canterbury football. The clubs that have been there should respect that this league is there to challenge them to uphold their standards on and off the field. In particular they should be seen to promote the game at all levels, in particular developing junior football.Some obviously don't meet the required standard hence the need for clubs like Selwyn and Waimak to provide that challenge.

Don't get too hung up on this forum if that's what you're using as your barometer of people's attitudes.

It's a shame with your local football knowledge that you weren't on University Challenge a couple of months ago when Canterbury University didn't know which country Richard Wilson was representing when he had the world record for longest time with a clean sheet in World Cup qualifiers - they said Australia! And of all the Challenge teams it was the one from Richard's own home town...
