99% of people won't give a shark about the name after the first week. The name is a non issue.

What they need to get right is their recruitment and media game... then they just need to start playing and winning.

I'm not a trademark or copyright lawyer but it seems unlikely that one can own "Auckland FC" - even more so when they aren't actively using it (evidenced by the fact that Vuksich owns it but it's not linked to ACFC).

But I'm sure there's so actual lawyers here that can weigh in on that.

Or have a look on IPONZ.govt.nz

There doesn't seem to be an "Auckland Football Club/Auckland FC" in there so no trademarks*. It is registered on the Companies page however.

The does seem to be a pile of trademarks under "Black Knight" from BLACK KNIGHT FOOTBALL CLUB LP being registered.

Perhaps, but it would say something about how Foley treats his fans.

Dunno if they'd want to take a name of a domestic rugby team. Surely carve your own identity.

From the herald...

Following next week’s announcement, the Herald understands Kiwi footballers Cameron Howieson (Auckland City FC) Francis De Vries (Eastern Suburbs AFC), Luis Toomey (Eastern Suburbs AFC), Michael Woud (Ventforet Kofu FC), Jesse Randell (Charleston Battery) and Callan Elliott (Motherwell FC) are set to sign with the Auckland side.

A high-profile Australian signing is also expected, with the frontrunners being Jamie Maclaren (Melbourne City), Jake Brimmer (Melbourne Victory), Luke Brattan (Sydney FC) and Bruno Fornaroli (Melbourne Victory).

So the Marco "swooping" has vanished from the discourse?

Ramming liberal dribble down your throat since 2009
This forum needs less angst and more Kate Bush threads

Marco talked about it in an interview the other day. He said Auckland approached him but he said no he doesn't want to commit to anything for next season, he wanted to go play for Brisbane for half a season then see how he feels about football before making a call about his future.

Seems to have gone very zen.

Had that feeling when he went to Chile and especially when he had the break after returning. He’s doing his own thing. Tbh Brisbane is a nice warm interesting place to be. It’ll be less pressure than Melbourne or possibly Auckland. And Zadkovich must be a character to play for.

your comment makes it sound like he may not even continue as a footballer. But in the same interview he sounded very motivated about playing at the next World Cup. Just apparently doesn't want to commit to a team at this point

seemed mixed to me. Dream to go to world cup, but also he's taken a lot of time off and is returning slowly for a reason. But, I didn't mean to insinuate anything, just that he hasn't signed for Auckland. He seems to like Brisbane.

He might go for the entire NZ audience for those sweet merch sales.

Something like the New Zealand Knights FC or something.

Maybe chuck some gold in the logo to reference the Golden Knights or something but play in black and white.

So he gets his black knight, his golden Knights reference, and boom, a successful football club is born.

So the Marco "swooping" has vanished from the discourse?

Or has it... from an article about Dan Hall
""
Off contract in Gosford at the end of this season, Hall will join the likes of Melbourne Victory’s Jake Brimmer and Brisbane’s Marco Rojas across the ditch, with Auckland’s recruitment chief Terry McFlynn also believed to be courting Melbourne City’s perennial poacher Jamie Maclaren to add to a mix of predominantly Kiwi-bred talent. I reckon McClaren is a good shout. He's not scoring this season but will still want decent $$$...    Auckland to swoop in as one of their headline signings.

McClaren's name was mentioned at the City game last weekend, hence he was benched. Quite possible.

Why does "Black Knights" remind me of a Condom brand?? Trojan Knights?

Vidmar's said their plan for the Nix, was hoping the heat would affect them more than Melb City, and then when Maclaren, Nabbout, Antonis etc came on they would run over the visitors from chilly NZ. Plus they also have a very short turnaround playing again tomorrow.

Maclaren has been linked to the Auckland team for weeks now, but Vidmar's job is on the line, he has to keep picking his best players regardless of transfer rumours.

Foley, within the last 7 days, said he thinks the team's nickname will be the Black Knights. I expect black to be one of the club/kit colours and/or at the very least a black knight will be a part of the club logo/crest.

On the Mainland Football app, the only draw out is Southern League. But when you can pick an organisation, the 1st on the list is Black Knights Fooball.
Don't know why so many options available. But yeah, maybe a hint

Almost certainly a placeholder entity using the name of the ownership group.
