$40-45 Million Soccer Specific Stadium - Petone Phoenix
Heard some interesting stuff about this over the weekend.
I'm now thinking 60/40 it goes ahead (and the more I hear the higher it gets lol).
Can we lodge submissions to the council in favour of the project? lol

Yes . Most definitely and that is something we should all do.

Still think it's better to spend $millions on developing the Phoenix into a winning side and attracting 12K to existing Westpac stadium than to spend upwards of $40 million on a new stadium out of central Wellington. How often has spending a fortune on a new stadium left British clubs struggling to pay debts which inevitably reduce on-field performances because they can't afford the players they need.
Make what you've got work better. It will be cheaper in the long run. The new stadium would be an expensive white elephant if the Phoenix decline as a result.
Why are we using the pulse as an example of how a game can sell out? The capacity is 2000 ... Pretty sure if the Nix played at Porirua Park you would get that every game too.

Well they are spending millions on developing the Nix into a better side. Spending millions on imports though, thats another story all together. The thing with English football is that you can field an entire side of imports almost. In the A-League you cant. If you want to compete with the best in England this is what you need to do. Not so much in A-League, too many restrictions on imports, salary cap.. etc. Ifill is one of the best players the League has ever seen, proof that mega bucks dont need to be spent.

Allegedly
Good grief I was talking about the pulse as a tongue-in-cheek way of referencing the two-trains argument. Not a crowd comparison.
Although it should be mentioned that they sold out their Porirua games last season and will sell them all out again this season - regardless of which game of the season it is and who might have just signed.

Fair enough. I was just throwing up a more economical alternative to building a new stadium. But big bucks don't have to be spent on imports - there are NZ internationals like Chris Killen, Rory Fallon and Chris James who could be lured to the Phoenix for the right paycheque.
Would I be wrong to suspect that most on this forum seem to want to move from Westpac? I just worry that spending $40 million+ on a new stadium could leave the actual spend on the team a bit threadbare. It's happened in England.

From what I've read the proposed funding for the stadium is coming from Gareth and some other Welnix members.
Not the Phoenix (or Welnix) per se, so it won't be a matter of them spending $x million on the stadium that has come from the Phoenix budget - or would otherwise have been allocated to same.
Welnix' reluctance to spend big on marquees seems a philosophical and strategic choice, not a financial one (in as much as spending big $$$ on marquees in the A-league has questionable financial benefit anyway based on the experience of others - in larger markets also).

But if we spend money on a stadium we won't be able to afford to sign Wayne Rooney. Fuck my socks, how is that argument still going around?
Did you know a new stadium will cause "personal safety problems for recreational runners and walkers"?

From what I've read, more than half of it will come from the council should they go ahead.
Nothing like the threat of competition to stir things up. ;)

Upgrade Step 1:

Is that dust, or the WOF's proposed all-weather plastic roof billowing in the wind?
A plastic roof in Wellington. ARF!
A plastic roof in Wellington. ARF!
Is the plan for a roof just basically buying a giant tarp and lashing it over the top of the stadium?

Grumpy old bastard alert
I imagine retro fitting a roof on there would cost much more than the proposed stadium, not to mention taking it out of operation for a while.... thus requiring a new/different stadium.
(Pure speculation)
think the last time a roof on Westpac was discussed (years ago) the cost was ridiculous - from memory I remember a figure of 30+ mill

$80m figure mentioned for a roof.

Yep, because they opted for the cheaper build materials instead of allowing a roof to be added later.
There are some Interesting documents on the web for the stadium that can be found via Google.
I found this http://westpacstadium.co.nz/assets/Documents/Staying-on-top-of-our-game.pdf
Westpac Stadium – built to a tight budget
The Westpac Stadium was designed in 1996–1997 to standards
that existed at the time and to budgets that focused on minimising
the price, as the total cost was the ultimate barrier to the project
proceeding.
The outcome was the best stadium in New Zealand and new
benchmarks for comfort, entertainment, and technology to enhance
a stadium experience. But that was then

Also this:

$60M for one stand in Christchurch, and we're talking about building a stadium for $48M.
That one stand could probably just about hold the capacity of the entire stadium we're thinking of building though.
Allegedly

This really is hilarious for how wrong it is. Not just now (you'd expect it to change over 18 years) but right from the start. E.g. we've never had anywhere close to 4 x 25,000 fan concerts in a year. In fact have we had 4 in the whole history? Turns out it's 7

Strategically placed "rates increase" notice...
Oh that's nothing. Read the rest of the Hutt News where it talks about the $40M of other projects the Council is hoping to lump on rate payers, and you'll see why they have deferred this until they get more detail.

Yeah, 13,000 capacity. And I believe it's being demolished due to the earthquake. Ouch.
