Coaching Speculation - The global search to hire Mark Rudan
Dear Mr Dome,
If you are reading this, which you should be because many of your passionate fans have input here, please appoint a Coach for the Wellington Phoenix SOON (like tomorrow) as otherwise the best players in the Club will be "cherry picked" elsewhere, and the Coach will get the pick of also-rans in the Club - and from other clubs or elsewhere. There are only a few games left to sort things out -we need certainty now, not one week before the start of the next season.

It has been mentioned several times in this thread there's a Board that decides.

Am I right in recalling that no one is quite sure who is on this board, and that information couldn't be found?
Given some of the choices they have made i would think there is no way they want their names out there.LOL
GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS
That's right, once again we have people treating as gospel something that was posted by someone that didn't actually know the answer in the first place. I'm sorry but in the business world the person with the ultimate responsibility is the Chief Executive, the buck stops with them. While there might be a 'board' responsible for finding the right candidate, its the CE that signs it off. If the Phoenix aren't operating like that and their CE has no power - then its no wonder the place is a fudgeing shambles.

Agree, NP, about the role of the CE (Dome?) but I'd still be interested in the composition of any special 'board/group' helping him arrive at that decision. Especially their collective football knowledge or experience.
He's a general manager not a CEO.
Also the board and the footballing committee are most likely completely seperate.
David Dome is not a Chief Executive. The Phoenix structure has a General Manager which does part of a CE role and the head of the ownership group performs some other functions.
Appointments are made by the Football Committee in conjunction with the ownership group for a role like Manager/Head Coach and with the manager/head coach for player contracting.

But we still don't know who's on the Football Committee. Why? Has anyone asked the club for those names, or are they hidden from prying eyes and ears under the club's 'Dome of Silence'?
Apparently, the club is already negotiating a new contract with Dura for next season, but without the input of the new coach who may, or may not, wish to keep Dura. So, who's Dura talking to at the club? And is that person competent to make such an important footballing decision for a club facing such big challenges in the next couple of seasons?
So, who's Dura talking to at the club?
I have an image in my head of Durante and his representative talking to a giant Phoenix logo in an empty room and making frustratingly little progress
Harry Ngata was on the Football Committee. Don’t know if he still is.
So was Noah Hickey. I do not know if he still is either.
Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days
Must be someone on this forum who can text/ring a friendly contact in the club and get that info.

Surely it's kind of poor from the club that we don't know who's on the board. Why the lack of transparency? Seems bizarre that one of the biggest decisions the club as a whole will make will be decided by an anonymous group of people. With other football clubs you know who has hired who, which is great because then we all know who to blame when everything goes tits up. With the Nix set up, it seems the hierarchy of blame goes from players to coach then straight to Davey Domeboy. I just think it would be nice if this board wasn't faceless to the public and we knew more about who to blame when we sign Kalezic 2.0

With all due respect to a club legend no other club would sign him and we shouldn't either
Auckland will rise once more
yeah I am not so sure. If we didn’t sign him, I think he would definitely get a gig at Sydney. Experienced, fit, will enjoy winning, close to home and won’t be playing 90. Great “squaddie” and I doubt he would price himself unreasonably. While we still have him as a starter, he will still command money in negotiations. It’s when he is not a starter, his price comes down.
Grumpy old bastard alert
You are Graham Arnold, a coach that players want to play for with a winning team.
You’ve got a defender who was fringe Socceroo and AW. Captained an HAL side for 10 years (?) Good Veteran to have in the shed that will teach the kids.
Still playing 90 mins, vastly experience and probably argueably the best domestic defender in the HAL across the years it’s been running (13?)
Comes from the area so back near family
Can sit on your bench and give you 20min each week if needed as a team player, body is in ok shape and has no responsibilities around captaincy/leadership and would probably come in at a cheap deal
Yes I absolutely would and would not give it a second thought
He has options if the Phoenix do not sign him but not as a starter for other sides (CCM). But while we keep him as a starter and club captain, he will command a decent wedge. If you low ball him, he can go spend a year riding the pine in Sydney, winning, for A similar wedge and less bullshark
Grumpy old bastard alert
Apparently it's with a view of transitioning to an off field role, so might not hold the expectation of starting every game.
Still a quality a league CB and it's looking like the team is going to be short of leadership.
Greenacre has already shown in one move that a 'Pro' qualification doesn't mean you are a better manager - he has shifted things round so that Parkhouse is on the left when he came on, something a licensed coach couldn't see was necessary somehow!
I think the Nix are asking for dispensation to hire Greenie. He hasnt got the required license because FFA are tinkering with the thing and Greenie is on the waiting list. Hire Greenie.....
Every time, Greenie has done the job.
Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

You 'think' based on... ? IIRC, a good number of people who go for these licenses don't get them first time. Worst case: Greenie gets the top job with some kind of FFA dispensation - subject to him getting his license during the season. What happens if he doesn't get it? Where would that leave us? We might be safer with Sherman in the top job, with Greenie as his assistant. That would be less pressure on Greenie, and might be more workable. Greenie would also be working with one of the most qualified coaches in Australasia who could help him through any exams/testing.

This appears to be a qualification that FFA can/are meant/want to run in this part of the world and they haven't quite finished putting the finishing touches on it and there are people on the waiting list to sit it. It wouldn't be right to restrict a coaches employment prospects because the governing body isn't ready - it makes sense to give dispensation to those that are just waiting for the course to be run.
I don't accept or read much into this talk of most people don't get these licenses first time - frankly I'd expect someone that gets to completing the course content would get their license - its likely to be an NCEA type thing than a university exam.
To be fair, we've never played poorly under Greenie. Haven't always got the results but seemed to play some positive football. I suppose I wouldn't mind him getting the gig if the FFA allow it. All the players like him which helps.

Really tough for NZ coaches in the A-League with the new rules.

Nice to be liked, but... could he be too nice to chop the bunch of underperforming squad players who need to be moved on?

Obviously Greenie is only one half of that though.
Yellow Fever - Misery loves company
A year ago I was hoping Des and Greenie weren't going to be in charge for the season after. Now I would love for them (Greenie in particular) to take the reigns. How time changes us.

It's espeacially stupid that the FFA put in place the new rules while simultaneously stopping running the courses to get licenses.

Now that Des is back in the country for the U-20 team there is no reason he cannot be the nominal head coach and let Greenie do the rest while he is getting his paperwork in order.

So, let's put the band back together again. Really? Des and Greenie? I have nothing against either of them, but last time they teamed up they took an underperforming team, got them going a bit better for a few games, but by the end of the season they didn't meet the club's - or the fans - expectations so the experiment was discontinued. Why would it be any different this time? There would need to be something else in the mix if either of them were to be involved again. Which is why I still like the idea of Sherman as head coach, senior figure, wise old head, etc. He could be a terrific mentor for either Des or Greenie - to everyone's advantage.
