Now this is a big IF... but if the commentary idea thing works out. What about voicing over live away games at a pub( eg. 4kings)?
I remember the ARC(alternative rugby commentary) doing an all blacks tour a few years back and it was miles better that the sky bollocks.

The pod return from their back slapping recording last week to look back at the hammering by Melbourne Heart and chat to Gareth Morgan on the proposed Petone Arena. Interesting comments from Gaz... more so about the licence extension than Petonix.

eish, with nothing about the new stadium confirmed yet, Gaz saying that there is no way we can stay at westpac is a ballsy thing to say...or just plain silly.

Or just the plain truth.
If Welnix can't sustain the Phoenix financially then it won't make any difference if our A-League licence isn't renewed in 2016 anyway. If we lose money every time we play at our home ground then something has to change.

But then it looks like you're not into this 100%.  Without being alarmist, under the current model and ownership I'm not sure the club can survive at Westpac with the current crowd figures.  They won't put money in forever

But that is extrapolating into the future with out taking into account any possible changes in revenue or reduction in costs.

If we were to get a 20 yr licence like the other clubs we could possibly negotiate better terms at the stadium if we guarantee x amount of games plus any potential finals for 20 years. At the same time each new TV deal and future sponsorship you would hope increases greater than costs.

Permalink Permalink

@ant yea welnix won't keep pouring money in to a bottomless pit. But if you are getting 8000 to a 12000 seat stadium you would be closer to break even than 8000 in a 35000 seat stadium... I can see your point but if we get a 20 year licence they would be more confident in paying the money to make football in nz last. Bring the fans in closer to field, you make the whole atmosphere better and yellow fever louder

There seems to be an odd sense of attachment to Westpac.  When it's full, it's a great stadium.  When it's not, it's not a great place to watch football codes really.  Think about having a proper home end behind one of the goals and seeing goals go in right in front of you.  Think about regular full houses.  Think about having a stadium designed for our team with input from our fans and owned partially by our owners.  This seems to me to be an absolute no brainer really...

Just in the paper or online?  Thought Harmon's comments were a bit silly - let's retro fit retractable seats but got no idea how much it would cost

Ok just read editorial online.  Strange stance - what other public sports ground has been paid for by the owners of the teams?  No-one asked the rugby union to pay for Westpac did they?  Welnix guys do need to pitch this as a multi-sport community asset though to avoid charge they're benefitting from a council hand-out.

Editorial. Check my twitters I took a photo...

Harmon is trying hard I think but he's jammed in a corner between a Board that don't give a toss about the Phoenix and are happy making money and a staff from a by-gone era.

Just as an amusing little anecdote, I was eating lunch the other day with a workmate (in Burger Fuel in Courtenay Place, yumm) when a stadium employee stormed in, angrily, and demanded to know if it was me on the radio saying that the Stadium and the Council should do more to help the Phoenix be sustainable. I said it was, and he raged at me for a few minutes, spewing some commercially sensitive details about payments to and from the Phoenix and generally making a dick of himself. Then he stormed out. The entire audience of Burger Fuel patrons was shell-shocked. I was flabbergasted.

So, while Harmon is putting on a very brave face and seems like a good bloke, he isn't working with the sharpest tools in the shed.

They must have overnight brainstorming sessions at the DomPost offices (can they still afford offices?) to figure out how to contort themselves into an anti-Phoenix position. You sort of have to admire it.

I think Harmon is running very good PR saying all the right things like suggesting retractable seats in the paper today. I'd like to see some Changes actually made before giving him too much credit

Is this it?

http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/comment/9740980/Editorial-Petone-stadium-needs-some-thought

I think this is the crux of the matter - and if the Board won't/can't change from that position then an alternative will happen (either in Petone or Eden Park).

Pity the DP never really touched on why Welnix are costing up an alternative.

Can someone point out examples of where the "boot has gone in", or where they've got their facts wrong? I haven't followed this story as closely as some of you.

I didn't really take away a sentiment of putting the boot in when I read it. I think the points posed are quite valid. The answers need to be able to justify those.

I can tell you if we could go back to 2007 or whenever it was we were debating what to do with Eden Park or the waterfront stadium, we got a whole bunch of nimbys that got stuck into it against the waterfront idea but there was never any real questions/answers of why it was a shit idea. Knowing what we know now, every person against it would have said 'bulldoze that and Mt Smart, sell the land off and stick in on the waterfront' Would have paid for itself and been a much better idea.

We got that so horribly wrong its not funny.

Yeah from the link posted above I thought it was reasonably balanced.

It's a classic editorial in some sense - trying to show points and cons, trying not to be overly controversial while still talking about a major news topic - it's usually the opinion of one writer, so whether it's pro-Phoenix or anti-Nix, it's a bit of a brush to label it fully as the Dom Post's viewpoint.

From this I have no problems with it - it shows pro-Petone ideas, from the mayor, Gareth etc, and then tells us what critics think too, it somewhat blandly doesn't come to any conclusion, definitely wouldn't class it as pro or anti Nix at all.

I could go on but I feel nobody will agree with me anyway, just my take from the outside.

Permalink Permalink

I didn't think the editorial was that bad either, apart from the annoying "soccer" references.

Non-Phoenix fans will have a slightly different view of the cost/benefit equation and the editorial reflects that.
