I accept your nomination. I would like to thank my mum, my first coach, the lady who cut up the oranges, the acadamy and anyone else I have forgotten!
You young people...... we actually had a tea lady when I played and she always had the pot of tea waiting in the changing rooms at half time. I think they still do that at Napier City Rovers and HB United too.

Enjoyed that, thanks JD. Interesting how things work out sometimes, stoked he made it here!

Guess it throws cold water on the talk that Ricki and Tony went to England and came back with Iffy and Greenie.

Hmmm yeah I guess so. Didn't think about that. Sack Ricki?

I'm glad someone other than me pointed that out...

I don't recall them coming back with Ifill.  Greenacre yes, and someone else that fell through (I can't remember who) then Ifill came across late while the club were in China.

From the article:

So what brought you to the A-League?

I was talking to Nick Carle in the gym one day, and said I was keen on going to the MLS. Nick said: "what about the A-League?"  I wasn't sure - I thought it was a bit far. Anyway, he spoke to his agent, and soon I had an offer from Wellington, which I dismissed initially, because New Zealand seemed even further away! Then, the agent agreed a deal for me to come to Central Coast Mariners and be their marquee. But at the last minute, it was scrapped. I learned later that, because Sheffield United have a stake in the Mariners, one of the directors had told them I was injury prone, and that I went missing during games. At that time, it was all I had, so I was very disappointed.

A while later, I bumped into Gary Alexander, the ex-Millwall striker. He said he'd been offered a deal by Wellington Phoenix, but couldn't take it because his family life was a bit complicated. It sparked my interest again. I thought why not do something different? I spoke to my wife and she said "let's go" - so I got back in touch with the agent, and ended up signing a one year deal with an option to extend.

---

It has been said a few times by other people on here, our best recruitment was when Ricki and Tony went to England. But from that it seems, we only ended up with Ifill by chance, rather than that recruitment trip.

Wasn't it Chris Shuker? Came here, seemed to like it, but didn't want to be away from family.

I think he was the year after - I think he was Greenie's mate from Man CIty days and came out that year after but didn't fancy it.  Very short if I remember

Chris Shuker! Hahaha, I remember seeing him play a trial for us, tiny little fella wearing a strip 2 sizes too big for him. Can't remember him doing anything great though.

yeah think Shuker played against Boca perhaps?

massive forehead.

think he was around 27 or 26 at the time which was interesting at the time

came down from Auckland for that game- terrible terrible day- grumpy game and Shuker must have just wanted to get back on the plane. He didn't look like that much at that point and was another wide player. But that's on that one game only....never watched the youtube highlights clips!

also wtf : "I'm not officially retired from international football, but after the qualifiers, the authorities lost my passport, along with four other overseas players (including Emerson Boyce of Wigan Athletic). We've been trying to get them ever since, but without success. It's a pity, because some of their competitive games since have been very close, and we may have been able to make a difference."

maybe NZ isn't that bad organisation wise!

He played against a team that could not even be bothered to send their senior side!

Yeah at the time, we needed a number 10 and had plenty of wide men.

actually sounds like he's ended up playing more of a central midfield role.. maybe we could have used him

The lead allowed Herbert to giveRoberto Cornejo, Mirjan Pavlovic and Chris Shuker a run as the trio try to earn permanent deals at the club.

Maybe we should have signed Shuker, considering how the other two signings worked out.

How good was he last night, particularly in the first half.

The smile when he scored just gold!

The swagger is back!

Immense amounts of manlove!

Stoked for the big fella, glad he got back on the score sheet. The way the rest of the team crowded him after he scored showed how much it meant to him.

Great to see that smile back. Great toe poke, his best game for a loooong time.

Well if I was going to turn for anyone..........

Jokes aside he looks fitter & slimmer than I think I have seen him at any time in a Nix Shirt

Here he is Circa December 2011

I've never considered him to be fat. But now, jeez he's borderline Ano. Great to see him putting so much effort into getting fit for the season though.

Ricki would read this with a raised eyebrow:
"Merrick has convinced his former Melbourne Victory gun Carlos Hernandez to sign on for Wellington - one of the club's biggest signings."
