yeah I noticed that too. I  could hardly make it out from a close up still photograph let alone from distance whilst moving on game day.

A lot of striped kits make it hard to see the name. Just how it goes.

Yep, worse has happened in love and/or war, or even just going to the shops. .
Go the big black box with a nice big number for everyone to see and read, shouldn't be to hard to work out who's who on the field.
Can't wait to see every one out there. Christ its been a long wait.

Its been a huge wait. Hopefully I can catch the Jets game.
Will there be a kit clash perhaps? Gold vs Yellow/Black?

I actually found it fine to see the players name. I'll just look at the number, easy enough.

Why didn't they just build in a contrasting panel on the shirt - maybe black or something dark to match the main strip - and then add the names in an appropriate, contrasting colour.

Subtle tonings, easy to read, could look good.

That's what designers are for.

The black box could just be bigger, but I think bold white lettering with a thickish outline should do the job.
You know we belong together...

according to the phoenix twitter page the scan he had on his knee at the hospital is not a fracture.

Bloody well hope so, we need him.   Not the way he'd want to rememeber his 50th game for us.

Surely with a knee injury that causes that much pain for him means he'll be out for months not weeks. If we're lucky he's back for the playoffs. Massive blow.

Like someone else said a fracture or break _isn't_ the main worry - something like an ACL injury is

Herald says they doing an MRI scan on his leg tomorrow, so actual diagnosis of injury should be in then. Hope its not to bad and he can shake it off in a few weeks.

Fingers crossed on this one. Didn't look nice in the slow mo replay - Could feel the pain from my couch! Best of luck to him. I hope it's not as bad as it looked.

Paul Ifill fears bad news from scan

SAM WORTHINGTON - The Dominion Post Last updated 05:00 20/12/2010

Paul Ifill fears he has a broken leg, but even if a scan today confirms that hunch, the Wellington Phoenix star is not writing off his chances of returning to the field this season.

Ifill was carried off on a stretcher in agony during the early stages of the Phoenix's 4-0 rout of the Newcastle Jets on Saturday night at Westpac Stadium.

He was taken to Wellington Hospital for an X-ray, which cleared him of a break in the tibia, but not the smaller fibula, or calf bone.

Ifill was yesterday swallowing painkillers and had his left leg up in bed while watching a replay of the game.

He will undergo a scan today but is fearing the worst. "For the smaller bone, you need a scan to show up any fractures or breaks," Ifill said.

"The physio thinks that it might be a break in the smaller bone. It's sore from the ankle all the way up to the knee and my gut feeling is it's probably the little one, because I definitely felt something go. You think you know what you've done and I'd be surprised if it isn't that."

The incident happened in the 10th minute as Newcastle's Tarek Elrich defended an attempted shot from Ifill.

"I just watched it again and as I go to land, my studs get caught in the ground. Something gave way, something popped. That's what makes me think it was the bone. I've broken a few bones before and it was that same sort of feeling."

If it is a broken fibula, the good news is the healing process should be straightforward and relatively swift.

The seventh-placed Phoenix have nine games left to try to qualify for the top-six playoffs and Ifill hopes to be there."Touch wood, I don't think it would be season-ending if it was that, especially if we make the playoffs."

Ifill's injury comes a week after goalkeeper Mark Paston was ruled out for the season, but left back Tony Lochhead and midfielder Nick Ward are on the comeback trail and skipper Andrew Durante will return from suspension against North Queensland Fury in Townsville next Monday. Newcastle were severely undermanned and travel-weary but the Phoenix were clinical and dominant despite losing Ifill.

Rising star Marco Rojas broke his A-League duck and played a part in the goals to Tim Brown and Chris Greenacre before Dylan Macallister continued his late-season revival with the fourth.

It was Rojas' first start for the Phoenix and he is now the talk of the town.

Ifill has taken the speedy 19-year-old under his wing and said the club needed to make re-signing him a priority.

Ad Feedback Rojas comes off contract with the Phoenix at the end of the season but has said he is keen to stay with the club.

Ifill and Greenacre spoke to both Rojas and former Phoenix striker Kosta Barbarouses shortly after arriving in Wellington and told them the sky was the limit.

"We said you've got the pace and raw ability to go as far as you want to go. I told Kosta if he didn't sign with the Phoenix that I'd be able to get him over to England, but he chose to go to the Roar which has worked out well for him," Ifill said.

"Another year or two there and he'll look to go overseas and the same with Marco.

"Marco is the sort of lad who in a couple of years' time, you could be talking about a big transfer and off he trots to Europe. I think he's definitely good enough and it's going to be tough to keep him, because a lot of clubs will be sniffing around now."

6 weeks? so is it the fibula?
If it is, he's a lucky chap! I mean he would have been out for months and months had he broken anything else!
way to go Paul,
come back for the end of the season so we can play with you and Marco out wide and Greenie+D-Mac up front in the play-off!

Huge loss but it really could have been so much worse.

Next six weeks means six games - most other times of the season six weeks would have been more than six games but the schedule is a bit lighter over Christmas / New Year.

I also think (hope) he'll be back in less than six but will take time to get back up to full fitness so maybe a couple of weeks coming off the bench.

Like I suspect many many others I thought we were screwed when he went off but the team showed great character to not let their heads drop and stay focused on the job.

Hopefully with Dura, Ward and Lochhead coming back we can maintain the momentum.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

I see now, he thought he broke something because of the pain. Funnily enough I had the same/or very similar injury in our winter season and it was indeed very painful. Was playing five weeks later after a lot of physio.

Interesting assesment. Aside from Rojas hes been the only one who has looked threatening.

He hasn't played as well as he did last season, but still manages to be one of the better players in the side.

if hes one of the better players atm, thats pretty sad. all hes done lately is lose the ball and take weak meaningless shots. apart from the match where he scored 2 goals a few weeks ago, hes been useless

dude pull your head out of your butt for a moment, useless - hardly, he's not been as effective as he was last year mainly due to the extra marking he has received....he's still the club's leading goal scorer, for a guy that's off his game I think that says alot......he is easily the best player we have and he will be missed, thankfully Rojas has set the team on fire in the last couple of weeks, hopefully him missing a a few weeks won't dmagae our chances too much.
