Some good info from worthington today, pretty much sums up the situation in a clear way.

Time someone went on the record - so good on Kavanagh for some decent info.

Still think a move from wellington is a straw man.  Has anyone actually suggested that as a realistic option?

Today's suggested topic for debate - should NZF be providing funding for the Phoenix when it is clear what they bring to NZF as a whole?  The FFA is happy to fund A-League clubs because it realises how important it is to have a professional league.  Is it hypocritical of NZF not to do the same in NZ?

I tell you what - even I am looking forward to just talking about football for a while!

Very good Editorial today in the Dom summed up basically and succintly as "When Terry started the Nix he said it was a decision made with his heart not his head, and the time has now come for Terry to make a decision with his head not his heart".

There you go Worthington - you can actually write a balanced, unemotive article (I note yesterday's tw*t job was taken off the net in the evening).

So now that I can be bothered to look at the actual substance of the article I question why NZF has had only 'cursory' discussions when the deadline is seemingly Monday. One would assume that if a back-up consortium was in the wings there would be quite a bit of discussion and detail surely (although I accept that nothing would be 'pen to paper' at this stage)?

How exactly is NZF going to be in a position to fund the nix? Via a subs increase for Mums and Dads?

I've been telling you Terry is gone next Monday for the last 12 months, but now it's Dave and Sam at the Dominion you believe them?

you might have Grandadi worried with your predicting skills...but then again maybe not

Not. A bit.

I'm getting a bit down-hearted by all this- I'm reminded of the early morning on the day of a funeral- you know it's going to be horrible, but you kind-of just want to get it over with......

This argument is moot.  NZF don't have money of that magnitude to spend.  They contribute to Ricki's salary I believe, but that's probably about all they can afford.

I thought this also when I read that article.  Just good even handed reporting.  Why can't it happen more often?  Oh that's right, Terry's not a popular guy.

Surely the contribution to Ricki's salary is just his renumeration for being National Team Coach?

Or are the NZF paying the Phoenix some type of compensation for the times when Ricki is called upon to perform his duties with the National Team?

Thankfully NZF are paying him...would be poor form to see Ricki at City Misson waiting for food parcel!

Absolutely no way NZF should be putting money into a privately owned team.
It is money from social and junior players and it should not be used to support a professional team.

It's also money from sponsors, grants from governing bodies, TV rights and prize money from major tournaments.

I agree that they shouldn't fund it, but let's not get carried away with the media picture that everything NZ football does comes out of the pockets of wide eyed 5 year olds and their parents.

It's a tricky one IMO. Having a professional team in NZ is extremely important. It would have been much less likely for us to make it to the world cup without the phoenix, and that was of course worth much, much more to NZ football than they have put back into the Phoenix. I'm not sure how much they pay the Phoenix, I understand they contribute a lump sum and in return they don't pay Ricki, but have him coach the NZ team. How this is a costed is completely up to the Phoenix accountant. I'm guessing the amount would be between 100 and 200k pa.

Ideally the player levy should be abolished. We want as many kids playing the sport as possible. Anyone know how much it is for each kid at the moment? But they need to get their revenue sorted from other things like sponsorship. Making the next world cup again would be huge.

NZ football also helped out with the reserve team last year. Again not sure exactly how the costs were met but they did contribute.

Agreed. The player registrations are held in Australia so why would NZF pay them? Sure there is the emotive issue of what they bring to NZ and Football but from a business perspective, they can't play in our leagues without a transfer to give players game time so why would we pay for them.

NZF are hardly going to say 'Oh yeah we have been plotting behind Terry's back for a replacement for ages'. All it takes (unlikely) is a white knight to appear for Terry and his problems to be solved and you have a relationship between Terry and NZF based on mistrust.

NZF have played this perfectly. Happy to support, not paying and kept a background overview on whats going on. The financial position of our code is being managed well by the national body for once (speculation) and I am happy with the position they have taken.

While I guess JD is asking the question (for debate), the article clearly states that NZF won't put $$ into the Nix.  However as with most relationships there must be other ways of supporting the club (in-kind stuff)?  That can be just as helpful as cold hard cash.

Actually - no I don't see it that way.  If NZF are looking at the bigger picture (development of football in this country) and it had a good relationship with Terry, it should be able to discuss back-up options and be relatively open with all parties (Terry, FFA and the Fab Four).

How much of that is in the public domain is another matter.  I just found it strange that the quote was 'cursory' discussions.

I don't have any problems with the how NZF have played this either BTW.

Well no. Its a business relationship.

I'm sure there is more going on that just cursory talks but that does not mean that NZF have to comment on it than being more than that. To do so could jeopardise that business relationship.

I don't think Google really shouted 'Hey we are thinking about buying Motorola' before they did.

That depends on if they had good reception where they were standing at the time...

If Terry really doesn't have $2 million by Monday (... and remember at the beginning of this thread we were asking "can he get $4 million by Monday?" and he did) will he do something silly in the heat of final defeat? I don't mean start shooting people from the top floor of the State Insurance building, I mean get drunk and start fights, or maybe give long, rambling, substance-impaired interviews to a clearly delighted Dave Burgess... I can't imagine someone with such fire, passion, ego etc. going quietly.

This is positivity. It's looking for entertainment value in a bitter outcome.

And what about The Rutles? There was a great band. Or were they simply a spoof? Hard to say but bloody good anyway.

Late payment of wages once is one time to many.

That alone has got to be sorely testing the patients of the players and lets face it, none of them are earning mega bucks, so it is not like they would be rolling in money.

Little wonder we have struggled to retain and attract players this year
