Not exactly related but I'm going to give kudos to Terry for working really hard to stay afloat. No arguement that he owes a hell of a lot of money around the show but he is paying things off by all accounts. How many of these big guns have just folded their tents when things have got tough and left investors etc holding their dicks? Good on you Tel.

I agree with the above statement somewhat but still have to imagine that given the current economic climate it's probably not in the interests of Terry's debtors to let him shut up shop and not pay them anything as I would love to bet that they owe large amounts of money to others as well meaning that they are better off showing a little patience and working through a solution with Terry rather than pushing him over the edge!

agree, if Terry is bankrupted then it's likly that noone will see any money, with him trading but being watched carefully most debts will be paid satisfactorily.

True. The only losers in that scenario are Dave Burgess and Matt Nippert.

For me the issue of Terry's business and the future of the Nix are becoming less of an issue. I am more confident than I was 6 months ago that the Nix will survive.

The reason?....well the Nix are not acting like a club thats about to fall over due to lack of money. You don't start recruiting guys of Mehmet's standing if you have no money. Guys like him are not cheap. Plus everything else about the club and its preseason activity suggest it is business as usual.

How this is all being financed? buggered if I know! but somehow the bills are being paid. Maybe Terry made $10 million from the sale of the Tory St business's maybe NZF and or FFA are chipping in, maybe as John Morrison has suggested their are a few generous Wellington businessmen who have donated money.......it could be a bit of all of this.

But the bottom line is the club will kick off the next season with a full squad including some useful new recruits....then it will be great to consign this topic to the bin and concentrate on football!!

they'll technically still be owned by Terry but FM customdians will be taken all the rental money to pay the arrears on their loans - happens all the time.

My expression of concern is raised to inordinate level. Owner of your club, Terry, is losing money, fist on hand, and losing money where world can read of his losses of property and assets on websites of delegate media of 2011.

Concern of AucklandPhoenix is for player signing, and to sing and dance on Sundays at local football stadium with other middle aged men with too much local beer in gastro region of body human. Do you not see what English call perspective? Man of Terry lose money, lose major asset, yet Mr Auckland only worry about signing of player.

Perspective is er, you say, loose, in English?

Ahsan Ali Syed, the shadowy man behind Western Gulf Advisory, is the subject of an extensive article in the Spanish edition of Vanity Fair cataloging his bizarre claims and denials that a New ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 86) Zealand businessman has frozen his Swiss assets.

The eight-page, glossy article catches Mr Ali in numerous misrepresentations - including his purported 8 billion wealth and the ownership of ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 55) racehorses - but the WGA founder and chairman is still claiming to be best friends with Terry Serepisos and says he will deliver his promised $US100 million loan to the embattled ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 81) Wellington developer.

The introduction to the article asks the question of whether criticism of Mr Ali is due to "millionaires envy" or the fact that Mr Ali is an "international ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 65) crook".

Mr Ali denied being a fraud, and deployed a variation of the Tall Poppy defence in invoking Formula One boss Bernie Ecclestone and Chelsea football club owner Roman ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 92) Abramovich.

Why do they always attack the rich? Why do they attack me and people like Ecclestone and Abramovich?

Pain in Spain

Mr Ali and WGA came to prominence in Spain in January ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 82) with the purchase of La Liga football team Racing Santander. WGA had been active in Australiasia earlier, convincing New Zealand businessmen like Terry Serepisos and Gary McNabb to pay large upfront ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 90) for loans that were never delivered.

The article details Mr Alis arrival in Spain, including the booking of an entire floor of a five-star hotel and the hiring of five Mercedes cars driven ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 38) with disregard for red-lights and speed limits. Over time, Mr Ali's entourage thinned, and he has not been seen in the country since May.

Vanity Fair spoke to local government officials in Spain ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 72) who recounted that Mr Ali claimed he was rich from producing Bollywood films promising to spent 50 million signing new players, including David Beckham.

I do not recall that ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 66) conversation, Mr Ali said when questioned over the Bollywood and Beckham boasts.

After repeated bounced cheques and threats by players to sue over unpaid wages, Racing Santander entered ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 30) bankruptcy protection and Spanish authorities are engaged in legal action to strip Mr Ali of ownership.

Denies wealth and asset freeze

Mr Ali also resiled from claims he made to the Guardian ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 33) newspaper that he was worth 8 billion. I do not know where it comes from. I do not know who wrote it, Mr Al said of the article.

Mr Ali also denied reports in the National ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 8) Business Review that New Zealand businessman Gary McNabb has successfully frozen the Swiss assets of WGA following a refusal of the company to refund $US750,000 paid in upfront fees.

Look ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 7) around you, do you think I have been repossessed? Mr Ali told Vanity Fair, gesturing to his lavish 27th floor offices in Bahrain.

Mr Ali also took journalist David Lopez to his stables in ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 54) Bahrain where he praised his horses as strong animals, honest and loyal. The journalist later returned to the stables to discover the horses being complimented were in fact not owned by ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 17) Mr Ali at all, but rather were only renting stable space from the WGA owner.

After a shouting match where Mr Ali accused the Mr Lopez of being on a mission to destroy him and threatened to sue, the ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 27) Indian businessman promised he would commit suicide if he were a fraud: If there are ten cases of entrepreneurs who complain I will cut my throat, he said, pulling his index finger ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 7) across his jugular.

Best friend of Serepisos

Mr Lopez, whose prior article for the magazine was an interview with Charles Manson, told the National Business Review that Mr Ali had ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 88) made much of his relationship with Terry Serepisos during his interview in late July.

He is finally giving Serepisos money to avoid bankruptcy. Ali says that Serepisos is his best ( Copyright Protected - The National Business Review 22) friend, Mr Lopez says.

WGA have still not delivered on their promised $US100 million loan to Mr Serepisos, who faces another bankruptcy hearing this morning in the High Court in Wellington.

From the SMH:

In other news, Wellington Phoenix owner Terry Serepisos has again scoffed at suggestions he is about to relinquish control of the club, saying he is close to sorting out his financial affairs. ''Handing over the club to someone else is the last thing I'm planning to do,'' he said.

Wellington drew more than 15,000 fans to a pre-season match against Brisbane Roar in Dunedin last weekend - something Serepisos believes shows how far the club has come since it was formed four years ago. ''It proves how big the brand has become,'' he said. While the Phoenix have just 16 players on their books, two more signings are expected by the end of the week in a further sign that Serepisos intends to continue bankrolling the club.

I've heard many suggestions here that Terry should sell out, but absolutely none that he actually might, so I'd be interested in where SMH is getting their rumours from.

You missed this little 'ripper' - much more their style.

"A Wellington businessman who loaned Terry Serepisos $4 million earlier this year says he now wishes he had never got involved.

Property developer Mark Dunajtschik, who ended up owning Mr Serepisos' former flagship Century City Hotel and car park complex, said dealing with Mr Serepisos had been the most unpleasant experience in his long business career.

What started out as a loan that was to have been repaid within days ended up as a disaster, he said yesterday ..." [Etc]

"cunning as a sh*thouse rat"

By that do you mean - not very?

(stupid, deviant or disadvantaged would be the adjectives I'd have thought more appropriate for that particular metaphor)

No, I mean "exceedingly". I'm surprised you've never heard that simile (not metaphor) before, it's quite common where I come from, which happens to be where Nathan Greenham comes from as well.

Sorry - we don't talk like that in K-Town South (massiv).  We would probably say "mentally agile like a toilet rodent" (in between our prawn sandwiches and asparagus rolls).

I didn't say that.

I was wondering why a rat that lives in the toilet would be considered cunning (to me that is rather stupid - much better to live in under the boxes in the garage corner - drier and less smelly).

I now understand it is a form of expression in another locale in the Wgtn region (perhaps the local patois equivalent of chav-speak)

I haven't heard of that one before, I heard a lot of "scrap c**t" or "nah jokes" on the coast, but not that.
