If we signed a decent striker however we could be number one

I know we are not expected by gareth to win the league every year but if you have a pretty good chance (like now) why not strike?

Because A There has to be someone available and B they have to want to come here.

Haha no thank you to Maceo Rigters - not enough value for money. Gareth uses his money wisely.

Don't be surprised to see Smith come back. He's productive for what he brings. Imports don't all have to be stars. We've got a decent mix - a key man, some flair and a couple of real hard-workers.

I agree actually. A hard working team-focussed player like Greeny and perhaps Smith would seem to fit in much better in Wellington than an inconsistent, individual, potentially selfish player like Rigters. I reckon we could even make Tevez look like sh*t haha.

Absolutely, we've done much better with their outcasts (Sanchez and Smith) than they've done with Righters the nix rejector.

We don't need his ego.

I would have loved Rigters at the Nix. I don't care about the ego, he's a striker, that's just how they are. Ifill and Rigters combining up front would have been epic.

Granted he hasn't fit at GCU, but Nix would have been a totally different environment.

agreed, for the kind of coin he was asking for you'd be expecting a smeltz like contribution, I think we made the best decision to not sign him

Well we made the decision not to sign him for what he was asking, it's not like we offered him whatever he wanted and he still walked away.

smith is quality

love to put lia at RB, and anchor the midfield with smith/muscat

Watched Ritgers last night - no doubt he can play, when he wants to, but you do get a sense he comes with an attitude. I agree completely that the first hurdle potential Nix players must pass is the character test.

I was hugely impressed with Thwaite - seems to be the GCU version of Dura - in terms of leadership, commitment, passion and playing style. A couple of others also caught my eye - Junslager (sp?) and Halloran (sp?). It will be interesting to see what happens with GCU players with Palmer's contracting shenanigans.

He dribbles a lot and the opposition dont like it - you can see it all over their faces. (Ron Atkinson)

Thwaite annoys the hell out of me, honestly. Don't compare him to Dura

Halloran would be a good get at the right sorta money - likely pretty cheap... a bit quicker than Pav and also knows how to finish, unlikely we'd have both though.

Halloran looks like one of the most promising young players in the league to me - really good; bit like Rojas with us. Would be a great signing.valeo2012-02-02 17:14:55

Halloran is pretty highly rated, almost any HAL club would want him.

Rigters actually comes across as having a balanced head on his shoulders in interviews.

Anything happen with the young striker from NSW that had a trial recently?

I agree with what was said above about keeping an eye out of any of the decent GCU younguns on cheap one year contracts.
We need a decent non-foriegn RB unless we can groom Lia to into one...

I don't get this 'lets groom Lia into a RB' thing thats popped up over the last week. In all fairness I get that Manny wants to play as a DM but if he goes there, that means Lia has to move to RB/ fight for his spot or be dropped. I prefer them as they are. Its change for the sake of it when it works fine as it is.

Manny is the best right back we have ever had, it's not even a close contest to be honest. I know he want's to play DM again, but he is easier to replace in DM than he is at RB. For the sake of the team, keep Manny at RB.

Greeny on radio this morning saying his future at the club is unclear i.e. what role the club sees for him; player, player / coach, coach, none .......

Next seasons reduction to four import spots puts added pressure on Herbert to think through the best use of those spots.

However they are used I would dearly love to see us sign that ever elusive, make a difference, striker. If the striker is an Australasian that would certainly takes a lot of pressure off the Greeny, Sanchez and Smith contract renewal decision e.g. we could resign all 3 and let Warner go.

You're right, he doesn't seem that good, this is at GCU though. How he would have slotted into the Nix we'll never know. I think he has a class that hasn't been able to be fulfilled at GCU which possibly we would have seen if he'd signed for the Nix, given the quality of football we have produced in the latter part of the season.

I can, but his footowrk getting into the box and his brilliance of the final pass won't be anywhere near as good. Funny, he's a midfielder too.

Ok pigeon amongst the cats time...
I see a certain C Payne, apparently a handy striker, was let go by the Jets yesterday.

http://www.footballaustralia.com.au/news-display/payne-leaves-jets/45053

Would we..
A) welcome him with open arms ..and big plastic hands ..you KNOW you want to!
B) kiss and make up
C) begrudgingly accept the situation
D) sodd off noddy-on ya bike. Or
E)turn our backs ..bare our bums .. start a Payneless thread.

Thoughts?RedGed2012-02-04 14:39:21

Understandable really but could he settle in and put right his wrong, make up for his metacarpal misdemeanor in time?

There's a nifty little chant we could use if he did come btw.

"Who can make the sun rise.....?
Used to be in blue......"..
..the Handy Man can cos he mixes it with love and makes the Nix look good!

But back to topic ..he's a young Aussie striker and caste off, perfect putty in Ricki's hand would fit the bill in many respects.RedGed2012-02-04 15:15:12

Can't get a game at newcastle, even struggled to get one at North Queensland.  No.

GOLD Coast United will not enter contract talks with any player until the season is over, leaving all except one senior squad member without a club when the final siren sounds.

The Bulletin understands club owner Clive Palmer had earlier told the squad negotiations would begin in January, but that has now been pushed back to March.

Before Moss tore his adductor muscle, the Kiwi international had been outstanding for Gold Coast and the Bulletin has learned that an offer had been tabled by a Europe-based club

Interesting, would like to see him here again though, better + younger than pasty imo
