And vice versa: our local newsreaders only know French or Italian variants (because they went to high school in those days) but struggle with other European languages.

Once I texted the Radio NZ National night presenter, Vicky McKay, when twice in one piece of news she pronounced Marco Rojas as "Rozhas", as you would in a fake French way. This was in the midnight bulletin when MBV had a good win over someone. It only ever makes the midnight bulletin, I know... Anyway, I texted her to say nicely that Marco was our local Waikato lad, etc etc, with a Chilean Dad and Kiwi Mum,  and that we pronounce it "Rohas". She was thrilled someone took care to tell her that, and read out the whole lengthy text on air.

I was thrilled too, as she bothered to mention my name - not that being in the midnight news is any big deal :-)

Well Andrew Durante is of Italian heritage and Marco doesn't pronounce his last name with a soft j as in "Rohas":  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcSQR1435iI

Interesting comments from Gameiro - seems unlikely we'll have him back next year.  Clearly has his sights set on an overseas move

It has been known for awhile hasn't it? Hard News has brought it up a number of times. He has goals higher than the A-League, and using this as a stepping stone. Win/Win for us both.

Remember he is on loan - other scenario is usually he performs for us and then goes back and does the same at Fulham, although unlikely in this case.

Yeah, I never thought he would stay in the A-League. And if he did I don't think it would be with us.

This is an interesting aspect of the Kiwi vs import debate. If a high profile A League player is simply using one of the less glamorous sides (all due respect) as a stepping stone, just how much is their commitment going to be when the going gets tough? At least a local player is going to be more inclined to play for local pride, isn't he?

Would be an interesting debate - except Gameiro is one player who has been busting a gut for the side.
And this is probably the toughest going has gotten

The whole point of him using us as a shop window is that he gets game time (and he has) and of course he wants to give the best account of himself that he can (which it seems he is). So he's not going to sit back and watch the game go by... he's going to run his bollocks off to show potential clubs (not ours) what he is capable of.

And he said this before he kicked a ball in a stripey/whitey. It's not new.

If we can get a Gamiero every season then I'd be happy. He's quality, puts in a huge workload, what more could we ask for from a 19 year old?

I think this has shown that the loan systems works - I know at the start of the season when this was mentioned everyone rubbished it saying no good player comes all the way to Australia/NZ for a season.

Maybe Howieson, Payne or another Kiwi might be worth looking at next time round?

Gameiro loved our chant for him when he was signing autographs after the Dunedin game.

Could argue that we're using him!

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

yeah, since he has been here it has been tough and he has easily been one of the best players on the park.

Sam Malcolmsen on the radio saying there are players in the Nix that probably aren't better than some players in Auckland City. Anyone agree with that? Who would you swap if you could? Downey for ....

Ivan, but that ship has sailed.  The imports.

If you listen to Malcolmson you get what you deserve.  Remember he's is one of the main advisors to Telfer that made him look so clueless when he spoke to Smithy last week.

You only have to watch the EPL teams and see how hard all those non-local players work. How many come from the town or county or country they play in? It's all about professionalism and buying into your team's culture.

More like busting a gut for Gamiero but it is win win for last 6 games :>).  Not sure he is much higher level than A league.  Wasnt loaned out to Championship for instance...

True. Telfer is so clueless he shouldn't even be talking about football, although I do enjoy some football chat on the radio.

With regards to Gamiero; would it be possible or likely for Fullham to re-sign him and then loan him out to us again for the season?

Think Fulham are giving him the flick at the end of the season, and he's hoping to get a new contract with someone after the U20 World Cup.

Absolutely agree - Sam Malcomson has no idea, he frequently changes his mind on various things. Comes across as a nice guy but for someone involved in football he is absolutely clueless

Well, it appears Kosta is pretty happy in Greece, so calling it unlikely.

I'm sure he is - at some point he's going to have to appear on a football pitch somewhere though!

I think it was a 3-year contract he signed originally.

NZHerald has confirmed that Totori will be taking up the 4th import slot next season by activating a clause in his contract that now gives him a second year. I can't begin to explain how unbelievably stupid the way this has panned out. Nothing against giving Totori a year to try him out but there is absolutely no way the club should have signed a contract that tied them to a two year deal. We now face the scenario of carrying an import who can't even make the bench.

It also hamstrings the recruitment for next year....we only have one import slot. We desperately need to reinforce the midfield but we now have one slot to bring a foreigner in. In actually fact next years squad will not be dramatically different to this years. Apart from the addition of Hernandez and a new import there does not appear to be a raft of top quality kiwi and Aussie players queuing up to sign with the Nix next season.

What sort of shitty contract lets a player, essentially untested, make the decision over whether they stay at the club or not. Damnit Ricki!

Permalink Permalink

ive never heard of a clause like that before, a player activated clause? poor form from the club on that one. however 2013/2014 season will be the year totori wins the golden boot! you saw it here first.

but isnt dani and/or smith on their ways out? wouldnt that open up slots?

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.
Permalink Permalink

Been talked about previous. It was a clause that was automatically activated. So the problem is with the original clause.

Permalink Permalink

But anyway, Totori isn't on a lot of money, so would probably be easy to buy him out if someone else came along.

Just for those confused : next year we have 4 foreign players already signed:

Ifill, Huysegems, Totori, Hernandez

So the new coach isn't going to really have much room to bring in players.

Kind of have to realise next year will be a transition year... Again

Ifill, Carlos and Waffles should all be starting. Get a 5th import that is quality and we are not looking that bad. Let's ask FFA to help us buy Lampard.
